{Rwanda President, Paul Kagame has called for tighter measures to curb gender-based violence, which remains widespread globally despite legislative efforts to protect women\u2019s rights.}<\/p>\n
He made the call on Tuesday shortly after flagging off a training course for senior security officials from 30 countries across Africa, dubbed the \u201cAfrica UNITE\u201d Command Post Exercise, at the Rwanda National Police Headquarters in Kacyiru, in the city suburbs of Capital Kigali.<\/p>\n
The exercise brings together participants to undergo an intensive training to explore ways to end all forms of violence committed to women and girls.<\/p>\n
\u201cViolence against women and girls was totally unacceptable in every society because it\u2019s a violation of rights, a crime and a threat to progress in Africa and around the world. We need concerted efforts to end the global pandemic,\u201d said Kagame.<\/p>\n
The President noted that when gender-based violence is left unchallenged, it diminishes the nation as a whole.
\nThe \u201cAfrica UNITE\u201d Command Post Exercise was last held in 2013 in Rwanda.<\/p>\n
Launched in February 2008, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon\u2019s \u201cUNITE to End Violence against Women campaign\u201d is a multi-year campaign aimed at preventing and eliminating violence against women and girls in all parts of the world.<\/p>\n
The event that attracted senior government officials, members of diplomatic corps, African Union, UN officials, gender based violence activists and as well as security officials from several African countries emphasized the need to share the best practices and end the global scourge.<\/p>\n
\u201cChildren who have witnessed violence inflicted on their mothers are often traumatized leading to poor performance in schools and more often than not, end up involved in violent behaviour,\u201d said the president.<\/p>\n
Rwanda has up one stop centres at the National Police hospital and in all the districts across the country districts, as well gender based violence desks at the Ministry of Defense, National police and Rwanda Correctional Services.<\/p>\n
According to Rwanda National Police statistics, in 2012 about 3,472 women and girls were raped, defiled, beaten or killed.
