{"id":203,"date":"2011-05-17T11:45:00","date_gmt":"2011-05-17T11:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/we-need-innovative-citizens-kagame-tells-varsity\/"},"modified":"2011-05-20T13:43:49","modified_gmt":"2011-05-20T13:43:49","slug":"we-need-innovative-citizens-kagame-tells-varsity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/we-need-innovative-citizens-kagame-tells-varsity\/","title":{"rendered":"We need innovative citizens- Kagame tells varsity students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>President Paul <span data-scaytid=\"2\" data-scayt_word=\"Kagame\">Kagame<\/span> has said that low financial capacity should not retard innovative ideas among students, adding that the problem is lack of proper entrepreneurial and developmental skills that matches with the modern society.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Head of State made the comments yesterday while addressing over 12,000 students and staff of the National University of Rwanda (<span data-scaytid=\"6\" data-scayt_word=\"NUR\">NUR<\/span>) at the university stadium in <span data-scaytid=\"11\" data-scayt_word=\"Huye\">Huye<\/span> District, Southern Province.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly before addressing the <span data-scaytid=\"7\" data-scayt_word=\"NUR\">NUR<\/span> community, President <span data-scaytid=\"3\" data-scayt_word=\"Kagame\">Kagame<\/span>, officially opened a state-of-the-art ICT laboratory at the University constructed with the support of the Republic of Korea.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the students, President <span data-scaytid=\"4\" data-scayt_word=\"Kagame\">Kagame<\/span> said that he was pleased to discuss the role of higher education and its importance to the nation, particularly the contribution of the university community in the transformation of the Rwandan society. He further asked students to work hard since nothing is easy in life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing can easily come without working and sweating for it,\u201d he challenged <span data-scaytid=\"8\" data-scayt_word=\"NUR\">NUR<\/span> students and staff.<\/p>\n<p><span data-scaytid=\"5\" data-scayt_word=\"Kagame\">Kagame<\/span> called upon the students to be innovative and self reliant and <span data-scaytid=\"12\" data-scayt_word=\"capitalise\">capitalise<\/span> on the newly established ICT laboratory to achieve new and constructive ideas that would help the nation attain sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p>He urged the students to be job creators as the youth of 21st century observing that they should not rely only on their lecturers\u2019 notes&nbsp;; but should instead engage deeper into research.<\/p>\n<p>The President assured them that the government was behind them adding that it would work closely with the university to meet various challenges. The president said the government considers education as one of the main pillars of development and will continue to invest heavily in the sector.<\/p>\n<p>The Rector of <span data-scaytid=\"9\" data-scayt_word=\"NUR\">NUR<\/span>, Prof Silas <span data-scaytid=\"13\" data-scayt_word=\"Lwakabamba\">Lwakabamba<\/span>, said that the newly inaugurated ICT school would be important in offering ICT courses, adding that it represents a large and Important new resource for staff and students at <span data-scaytid=\"10\" data-scayt_word=\"NUR\">NUR<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the structure has 11 laboratories with 400 computers and is the best of its kind in Africa. The facility was equipped at a cost of US$<span data-scaytid=\"1\" data-scayt_word=\"4.7m\">4.7m<\/span> with the Korean International Cooperation Agency (<span data-scaytid=\"15\" data-scayt_word=\"KOICA\">KOICA<\/span>) donating US$<span data-scaytid=\"16\" data-scayt_word=\"4m\">4m<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. <span data-scaytid=\"14\" data-scayt_word=\"Lwakabamba\">Lwakabamba<\/span> commended the Korean government for the continued support, and added that more projects were yet to come, to expand the University infrastructure much needed.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to his speech, the Head of State had listened to the University\u2019s Guild President <span data-scaytid=\"17\" data-scayt_word=\"Hildebrande\">Hildebrande<\/span> <span data-scaytid=\"18\" data-scayt_word=\"Niyomungeri\">Niyomungeri<\/span> read out the challenges the students at the national university face.<\/p>\n<p><span data-scaytid=\"19\" data-scayt_word=\"Niyomungeri\">Niyomungeri<\/span> thanked the president for the visit and further commended the head of state for boosting the bursary for Students Financing Agency of Rwanda (<span data-scaytid=\"20\" data-scayt_word=\"SFAR\">SFAR<\/span>) sponsored students by 70 percent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Paul Kagame has said that low financial capacity should not retard innovative ideas among students, adding that the problem is lack of proper entrepreneurial and developmental skills that matches with the modern society.
