Of the returnees, 194 were received at the Grande Barri\u00e8re border post in Rubavu District, 34 crossed through Rusizi I, while 23 entered through Kamanyola.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some said their years in the DRC were marked by conflict, lack of identification documents and fear fuelled by false information, including claims that those returning to Rwanda would be killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sekanshize Dancile, who lived in Minova, said life in the DRC was difficult, with the lack of identification documents restricting her movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe were treated very badly and our identification documents were taken away. We could not even travel by boat because we had no documents. I am very happy to be back in Rwanda,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She expressed hope of finding employment to support herself and improve her living conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mico Vicent Ally, 28, who was born in the DRC, said conflict had disrupted his family’s life for years. He recalled attacks by Mai-Mai fighters known as Bamutomboki, who burnt down their home in Masisi, forcing them to flee to Kalehe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen we arrived on the wide roads, I immediately felt like I was in Europe. Now that I have reached my promised land, I will work and build a better future. I am still young and energetic,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

False information delayed return<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baraturukundo Pascal, who returned with his wife and eight children, said he fled to the DRC in 1994 from Boneza in the former Gisenyi Prefecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said false information spread by the FDLR discouraged refugees from returning, with claims that the group would take control of Rwanda and that returnees would be killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rwiririza Fred, Acting Executive Secretary of Rusizi District, said discussions with the returnees showed that misinformation about conditions in Rwanda had contributed to their prolonged stay abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He urged them to seize available opportunities, work towards self-reliance and ensure their children attend school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe Rwandans are hardworking people. Most of them are still young and should seize the opportunity to work and improve their lives. They should seek advice whenever they need guidance and ensure their children go to school. I told them that they have not been left behind and should work towards improving their lives like other Rwandans,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
