{"id":2000128004,"date":"2026-10-04T16:12:00","date_gmt":"2026-10-04T14:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/?p=2000128004"},"modified":"2026-10-04T15:20:53","modified_gmt":"2026-10-04T13:20:53","slug":"27-drc-soldiers-sentenced-to-death-for-fleeing-afc-m23-fighting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/27-drc-soldiers-sentenced-to-death-for-fleeing-afc-m23-fighting\/","title":{"rendered":"27 DRC soldiers sentenced to death for fleeing AFC\/M23 fighting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soldiers were accused of fleeing fighting involving the DRC armed forces (FARDC) and fighters from AFC\/M23, RED Tabara and Twirwaneho.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were among 112 soldiers tried in a case whose verdict was delivered on Friday, October 2, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The court sentenced another 54 soldiers to five years in prison, while 10 others were sentenced to six months for disobeying orders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The remaining 21 soldiers were acquitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six female soldiers were among those convicted of cowardice in the face of the enemy or disobeying orders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The public trial began on September 15, 2026, at the Military Court in Uvira.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.igihe.com\/en\/2026\/10\/e9c3b850-00d8-11f1-9972-d3f265c101c6.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"27 DRC soldiers sentenced to death for fleeing AFC\/M23 fighting\" class=\"wp-image-2000128006\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">FARDC soldiers during a past patrol.
