{"id":2000113902,"date":"2026-06-01T08:08:23","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T06:08:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/?p=2000113902"},"modified":"2026-06-01T08:08:32","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T06:08:32","slug":"egypt-uncovers-ancient-egyptian-greco-roman-artifacts-south-of-cairo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/egypt-uncovers-ancient-egyptian-greco-roman-artifacts-south-of-cairo\/","title":{"rendered":"Egypt uncovers ancient Egyptian, Greco-Roman artifacts south of Cairo"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A statement by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said the discovery, made by an Egyptian archaeological mission from the Supreme Council of Antiquities at the &#8220;Ihnasya al-Medina&#8221; site, shed new light on the religious and cultural prominence of the ancient city across various historical eras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the key findings is a reused stone block featuring a prominent inscription of Pharaoh Senusret III&#8217;s coronation and birth names, alongside a cartouche of the deity &#8220;Osiris-Naref,&#8221; a major god worshiped in Ihnasya during ancient Egyptian and Ptolemaic times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hisham Elleithy, secretary-general of Egypt&#8217;s Supreme Council of Antiquities, said uncovering the cartouche of King Senusret III is a &#8220;significant find,&#8221; as the pharaoh was historically linked to several major monuments at the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mission also excavated structural extensions of a Roman basilica, the remnants of an ancient Doric temple, fragments of wall statues, and Roman-era pottery molds used for minting coins. A rare marble statue head of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, was also discovered, the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of Egypt&#8217;s most vital archaeological sites, &#8220;Ihnasya al-Medina&#8221; flourished during the Greco-Roman eras, when it was known as Herakleopolis Magna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/sas.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2000113905\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A sphinx statue believed to be made in the likeness of a Roman emperor is uncovered from an archaeological site in Qena, Egypt, in an undated photo distributed Monday.
