Last month, former Governor Francois <span data-scaytid=\"76\" data-scayt_word=\"Kanimba\">Kanimba<\/span> said inflation may reach 8 percent this year. <span data-scaytid=\"10\" data-scayt_word=\"Gatete\">Gatete<\/span>, who was appointed as <span data-scaytid=\"27\" data-scayt_word=\"Kanimba\u2019s\">Kanimba\u2019s<\/span> replacement on May 6, said the official estimate is that inflation will reach 7.5 percent by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want it to go that far,\u201d he said in an interview after his swearing-in ceremony on May 13 in Kigali, the capital. \u201cWe are fighting <span data-scaytid=\"1\" data-scayt_word=\"inflation.\u201d\">inflation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href='http:\/\/www.bnr.rw\/' title=\"Open Web Site\" rel=\"external\" density=\"full\">National Bank of Rwanda<\/a>&nbsp;kept its key lending rate unchanged at 6 percent last month, after three reductions in the past year, to help boost lending and support the economy\u2019s expansion. Rwanda\u2019s&nbsp;<a href='http:\/\/topics.bloomberg.com\/finance-ministry\/' density=\"sparse\">Finance Ministry<\/a>&nbsp;has forecast economic growth in the coffee-growing country will slow to 7 percent this year from 7.5 percent in 2010 as poor rains curb agricultural production.<\/p>\n<p>The central bank hasn\u2019t decided whether it will raise&nbsp;<a href='http:\/\/topics.bloomberg.com\/interest-rates\/' density=\"full\">interest rates<\/a>&nbsp;to curb inflation, <span data-scaytid=\"11\" data-scayt_word=\"Gatete\">Gatete<\/span> said.<\/p>\n<p>Rwanda\u2019s national budget will increase to 1.12 trillion Rwandan francs ($1.85 billion) in the 2011-12 fiscal year, from 984 billion francs a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Finance. The increase has been accounted for in the central bank\u2019s inflation projection, <span data-scaytid=\"12\" data-scayt_word=\"Gatete\">Gatete<\/span> said. Inflation advance last month largely because of&nbsp;higher food and fuel costs, he said.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: normal; font-size: medium; \">While food prices are still rising, the rate of increase has slowed, he said. In April, food prices climbed 6 percent, after jumping 8 percent in the previous month. Higher fuel prices are mainly due to political instability in the Middle East and are beyond the bank\u2019s control, he said. Gasoline prices in Rwanda increased 14 percent between January and April, according to industry regulators.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWe can only control the effects,\u201d <span data-scaytid=\"20\" data-scayt_word=\"Gatete\">Gatete<\/span> said.<\/p>\n<p><span data-scaytid=\"21\" data-scayt_word=\"Gatete\">Gatete<\/span>, a former ambassador to the <span data-scaytid=\"2\" data-scayt_word=\"U.K\">U.K<\/span>. and previously a deputy governor at the central bank, replaced <span data-scaytid=\"26\" data-scayt_word=\"Kanimba\">Kanimba<\/span> after his predecessor was named as the new minister of trade.<\/p>\n<p><span data-scaytid=\"22\" data-scayt_word=\"Gatete\">Gatete<\/span> said he plans to focus on modernizing communication systems, training staff and improving research capabilities at the bank during his tenure as governor.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Bank of Rwanda will aim to keep inflation below 7.5 percent this year, lower than a previous estimate of 8 percent, newly appointed Governor Claver Gatete said.
