({{Chimpreports}})-{At least 8 police officers have been arrested following last week\u2019s jail break that saw a Rwandan Brigadier General, Robert Rutinywa and four other high profile inmates escape from the tightly-guarded Special Investigations Unit (SIU) police barracks in Kireka, Kampala. } <\/p>\n
Reports that the inmates who included suspected high profile criminals \u2013 Joseph Masereka, Delvin Kahibirwa, Reagun Kirunda and Robinson Masereka escaped from the facility whose security is water-tight, sparked off fears of support by officials at SIU. <\/p>\n
Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga said \u201cfour of the suspects were suspected terrorists and the other (Ritinywa) was a suspected fugitive.\u201d<\/p>\n
He pointed out that, \u201cThe suspects took time and planned their mission. They dug a hole in the ceiling before cutting the roof top and then used it as an escape route.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cThe 8 police officers have been arrested as investigations proceed. Some of them may have aided the escape of the suspects because at the time the incident took place, 4 of them were on duty.\u201d <\/p>\n
The suspects are thought to have escaped between 1:00am and 3:00am on May 28. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe are doing whatever it takes to see that these suspects are apprehended. We have their details and we hope to find them any time from now,\u201d said Enanga. <\/p>\n
Rutinywa and his fellow suspected fugitives \u2013 Capt. Charles Sibo and Anthony Rugigana, were arrested in 2012 by the military intelligence at the border town of Kihiihi while on their way into the DRC. <\/p>\n
Departed UPDF 2nd division Commander Brig. Patrick Kankiriho told ChimpReports in 2012 that the suspects confessing to having harboured plans of destabilising Rwanda. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhen we arrested them, they pleaded guilty to have been involved in rebel activities in Nakivale camp,\u201d said Kankiriho. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe were very clear to them that Uganda is a country that follows the rule of law. We told them that they would be charged in courts of law. That\u2019s the part we played,\u201d observed Kankiriho. <\/p>\n
They were charged with illegal entry at a court in Kabale. <\/p>\n
Rutinywa, who denied being a Rwandan, would later find himself jailed at SIU headquarters in Kireka where he had spent three years until the early morning hours of May 28.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
