{Ten people were crushed to death on Monday night after a perimeter wall from a mosque collapsed onto shanties erected close by in capital Nairobi.}<\/p>\n
“We believe that the wall must have been weakened by floods that hit the area yesterday,” Fred Majiwa, the communications manager for St John’s Ambulance, an aid charity, told Anadolu Agency on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n
He said rain started at around 10pm Monday and flooded many roads in Nairobi.<\/p>\n
“Most rescue agencies could not reach the scene of the incidence as the roads were completely flooded,” added Majiwa.<\/p>\n
“So far we have recovered ten bodies from the scene and two people were in critical condition,” he confirmed.<\/p>\n
He added that scores of others were injured but most of them have already been treated and discharged from hospital.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of commuters were left stranded past midnight after roads in the capital were left flooded from heavy rains that had pounded different areas.<\/p>\n
“It was a motorist’s worst nightmare,” Bryson Wechuli, a resident from Kileleshwa estate in Nairobi, told Anadolu Agency.<\/p>\n
“There was a traffic jam on our main road; I counted around 15 cars which were completely submerged in water,” he said.<\/p>\n
“The government should do more to improve the capital’s drainage system,” fumed Wechuli.<\/p>\n
Fifteen peopled died recently after heavy rains pounded Narok town, which had been built on the path of a seasonal river, because of heavy rains.<\/p>\n
Five others died when flash floods ravaged Kenya’s northern eastern town of Mandera.<\/p>\n
The Kenya meteorological department has asked Kenyans to remain vigilant during the rainy season, expected to end in June.<\/p>\n
