{A group calling itself Coalition for the Defense of Equal Citizens (CODEC) on Wednesday demonstrated in Accra to protest against ethnic and tribal politics in Ghana.}<\/p>\n
The demonstration was in reaction to comments by a leading member of the opposition main New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yaw Osafo- Maafo, the group considered as being ethnocentric.<\/p>\n
The protestors marched through the main streets of Accra, waving placards amid singing, drumming and dancing.<\/p>\n
Some of the placards read: \u2018We are all equal’; \u2018Stop the tribal politics’; \u2018Together as one’; and \u2018Unity is diversity’; among others.<\/p>\n
The group, in a statement ahead of the protest, said it was resolved to lead a sustained and determined campaign to bring an end to tribal bigotry and incendiary language in Ghana\u2019s body politic.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe would not wait for Rwandan-style genocide where millions of our citizens would be killed before we act,\u201d said the statement signed by its convener, Edudzi Kudzo Tameklo.<\/p>\n
Key members of the NPP also joined Wednesday\u2019s demonstration against their party stalwart.<\/p>\n
Osafo-Maafo\u2019s is alleged to have commented over a month ago that even though close to 90-per cent of Ghana\u2019s resources were concentrated in Akan-dominated parts of the country, it was non- Akans coming from regions poor in resources that were running the country.<\/p>\n
The former finance Minister has admitted speaking at the forum where he was alleged to have made the comments but denied ever making such ethnocentric comments as captured on a secretly recorded audiotape.<\/p>\n
He believes his voice was doctored for mischief. <\/p>\n
