{The United States has welcomed the Parliament of the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s approval of electoral legislation that sets the country on course towards timely elections in line with its Constitution. } <\/p>\n
Jen Psaki, the U.S Department Spokesperson says in a Statement that \u201cThe United States applauds the efforts of the National Assembly and the Senate to reach consensus and ensure that presidential elections happen no later than December 2016.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the Meantime the vote on the electoral law Sunday, January 25 raises many reactions in the political class of the DRC. <\/p>\n
At the presidential majority, it says that the most important was to meet the expectations of the population. <\/p>\n
“I think for the moment there is no problem, either on the side of the opposition or on the side of the majority. But we must always be careful, “said the opposition MP Antoine Nzangi. <\/p>\n
In the majority, MP Musemena Gaston said he was also “happy because both chambers have reached a responsible convergence.” For him, the key was to address Article 8, which has generated much debate. <\/p>\n
For the U.S \u201cParliament’s action reflects the will of the Congolese people and upholds the DRC constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, the United States urges President Kabila to expeditiously sign the electoral legislation as passed by the Parliament and reaffirm that Congo’s first peaceful transition of power will take place through presidential elections in 2016\u200e.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe also call upon the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) to release a global electoral calendar promptly that is in line with Parliament’s action and the Constitution.\u201d The statement adds<\/p>\n
Psaki also noted that the United States stands ready to support the DRC in the electoral process. <\/p>\n
