{"id":18315,"date":"2015-01-19T03:40:05","date_gmt":"2015-01-19T03:40:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/us-condemns-icc-probe-on-israel-over-gaza-strip\/"},"modified":"2015-01-19T03:39:01","modified_gmt":"2015-01-19T03:39:01","slug":"us-condemns-icc-probe-on-israel-over-gaza-strip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/us-condemns-icc-probe-on-israel-over-gaza-strip\/","title":{"rendered":"US condemns ICC probe on Israel over Gaza Strip war as \u2018tragic irony\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{The United States joined Israel in condemning the International Criminal Court decision to open a preliminary probe into possible war crimes committed against Palestinians, blasting it as a \u201ctragic irony\u201d.}<\/p>\n<p>ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda said her office would conduct an \u201canalysis in full independence and impartiality\u201d into alleged war crimes by Israel, including those committed during last year\u2019s Gaza offensive. <\/p>\n<p>Her decision comes after Palestine formally joined the ICC earlier this month, allowing it to lodge war crimes and crimes against humanity complaints against Israel as of April.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 2,200 Palestinians and 73 Israelis were killed during last summer\u2019s war in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>The US criticized the decision late Friday, saying it opposed actions against Israel at the ICC as \u201ccounterproductive to the cause of peace\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a tragic irony that Israel, which has withstood thousands of terrorist rockets fired at its civilians and its neighbourhoods, is now being scrutinised by the ICC,\u201d US State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had earlier reacted angrily to the prosecutor\u2019s decision, calling it \u201cscandalous\u201d and \u201cabsurd\u201d since \u201cthe Palestinian Authority cooperates with Hamas, a terror group that commits war crimes, in contrast to Israel that fights terror while maintaining international law, and has an independent justice system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said the sole purpose of the preliminary examination was to \u201ctry to harm Israel\u2019s right to defend itself from terror\u201d and he said the decision was \u201csolely motivated by political anti-Israel considerations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Palestinian foreign minister Riyad al-Malki welcomed the ICC\u2019s move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything is going according to plan, no state and nobody can now stop this action we requested,\u201d he told AFP. \u201cIn the end, a full investigation will follow the preliminary one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gambian-born Bensouda had earlier stressed that \u201ca preliminary examination is not an investigation but a process of examining the information available&#8230;
