Police on Sunday confirmed the arrest of two Rwandans suspected of being members of a human trafficking racket headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. Police said following a tipoff the suspects were nabbed on Thursday in a suburban hotel in Nyabugogo with three female victims who were being readied for a trip to Nairobi.<\/p>\n
According to the police, they operated a racket that targeted desperate young girls and single mothers with the lure of working abroad for huge salaries and were under constant police surveillance.<\/p>\n
Police Spokesman Celestin Twahirwa, underscored human trafficking in Rwanda as a real threat and not a myth, urging the public to always provide timely information that helps security officers infiltrate traffickers.<\/p>\n
Late last year, Rwandan police rescued two victims including a female student who had been trafficked to Zambia.<\/p>\n
In another swoop, a Ugandan girl was intercepted at Kigali International Airport as she was being trafficked to Asia.<\/p>\n
At least 153 cases of human trafficking were registered in Rwanda since 2009, 90 percent of them female and 82 percent between the age of 18 and 35.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
