{Heavily-armed anti-terrorism Police and elite military units have been deployed in and around Kampala to boost security during the New Year celebrations.

\u201cWe are intensifying patrols, and general visibility of Police supported by sister security agencies to deter terror groups that may targeting to disturb the end of year\/beginning of the year festivities,\u201d said Gen Kale Kayihura on Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n
The security deployments come against the backdrop of a terror attack in Somalia in which three Ugandan soldiers including one at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel were killed on Christmas Day.<\/p>\n
Chimp Corps report that specialised security vehicles and soldiers are currently patrolling the city.<\/p>\n
Gen Kayihura further warned: \u201cI would like to alert the public of existence of groups lurking in the shadows with intentions of targeting individuals or to carry out indiscriminate attacks.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cWe have in past, effectively, countered these groups through vigilance and partnership: reporting suspicious individuals or objects, and, even apprehending them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Al Shabaab terrorists struck at the heart of Kampala in 2010 during the World Cup finals, killing over 79 people and leaving many injured.<\/p>\n
Since then, police have intensified counter terrorism operations. Several suspected militants have since been arrested and jailed for planning terror attacks in Uganda.<\/p>\n
