Egypt and South Sudan Saturday signed an agreement on technical and development cooperation in water resources, said the Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation in a joint statement.<\/p>\n
Egyptian Water Minister Hossam Moghazy held several meetings with his South Sudanese counterpart Jemma Nunu Kumba in Cairo on the sidelines of South Sudanese President Silva Kirr\u2019s current three-day visit, the statement added.<\/p>\n
The agreement came within the framework of a memorandum of understanding signed in 2006 and cooperation protocols signed in 2011 between the two sides, the statement added.<\/p>\n
The talks discussed $26.6 million in projects between both countries to be funded by an Egyptian grant to South Sudan. One of the projects aims to establish harbors on the Bahr el-Ghazal River with an $11.1 million grant. That project will start in 2015, the statement noted.<\/p>\n
The projects also include Egypt investing $6 million for the creation of 17 wells, and the establishment of a desalination center and pumping station.<\/p>\n
South Sudan is also slated to build a new dam near the city of Wau in cooperation with Egypt. The head of the Nile Water Department at the Egyptian Water Ministry, Ahmed Bahaa al-Din, said on Oct. 26 all studies concerning the building of a South Sudan dam had been conducted in cooperation with Egypt.<\/p>\n
