{United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon strongly condemned the suicide bombing today at a government boarding school in the north-eastern Nigerian town of Potiskum, reportedly killing dozens of students and wounding countless others.}<\/p>\n
In a statement issued today by his spokesperson, Mr. Ban reiterated his conviction that \u201cno objective justifies wanton violence against civilians,\u201d and called for the perpetrators to be \u201cswiftly brought to justice through a process respectful of Nigeria\u2019s human rights obligations and for adequate security measures to be provided for the protection of civilians.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Secretary-General is outraged by the frequency and brutality of attacks against educational institutions in the north of the country and reiterates his demand for an immediate cessation to these abominable crimes,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n
The attack took place earlier today at the Government Science Technical School Potiskum in Yobe State.<\/p>\n
The Secretary-General also extended his sincere condolences to the families of those who were killed, and to the Government and people of Nigeria.<\/p>\n
In related news, the UN Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF) also condemned the attack on the school.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese repeated and relentless attacks on children and schools are attacks on the future of Nigeria, a country that already has the largest number of children out of school in the world,\u201d UNICEF said in a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe call on those with the responsibility and power to bring the perpetrators of this cruel act to justice, and to uphold their responsibilities to protect children,\u201d the statement also said.<\/p>\n
