{"id":173,"date":"2011-05-12T09:35:03","date_gmt":"2011-05-12T09:35:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/sex-and-coffee-raise-risk-of-brain-rupture\/"},"modified":"2011-05-12T09:32:50","modified_gmt":"2011-05-12T09:32:50","slug":"sex-and-coffee-raise-risk-of-brain-rupture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/sex-and-coffee-raise-risk-of-brain-rupture\/","title":{"rendered":"Sex and coffee raise risk of brain rupture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you have a brain aneurysm, drinking coffee, having sex or even getting angry may boost the risk of it rupturing, a new study suggests.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Although the risk is extremely small, people who have aneurysms should be careful, said Dr <span data-scaytid=\"5\" data-scayt_word=\"Sahil\">Sahil<\/span> <span data-scaytid=\"6\" data-scayt_word=\"Parikh\">Parikh<\/span>, assistant professor of medicine at University Hospitals Case Medical Centre in Cleveland.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cFor those patients who do have aneurysms, it would be advisable to avoid those <span data-scaytid=\"9\" data-scayt_word=\"behaviours\">behaviours<\/span>,\u201d said <span data-scaytid=\"7\" data-scayt_word=\"Parikh\">Parikh<\/span>, who\u2019s familiar with the study findings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Aneurysms occur when the wall of an artery weakens and bulges out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>They can occur anywhere in the body, but are particularly dangerous in the brain, where they can cause a <span data-scaytid=\"10\" data-scayt_word=\"haemorrhagic\">haemorrhagic<\/span> (bleeding) stroke if they burst.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In the study, published online May 5 in the journal&nbsp;Stroke, researchers asked 250 patients who had suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm about their exposure to 30 possible triggers before the <span data-scaytid=\"11\" data-scayt_word=\"haemorrhage\">haemorrhage<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The investigators found that being startled raised the risk of burst aneurysm in someone who already has an aneurysm by the highest level \u2014 23-fold. Anger boosted the risk by 6 times.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Other things raised the level, too&nbsp;: Coffee (2 times), cola (3 times), straining for defecation (7 times), sexual intercourse (11 times), nose blowing and vigorous physical activity (both 2 times).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Seems to be higher blood pressure, said study lead author Dr. Monique <span data-scaytid=\"1\" data-scayt_word=\"H.M\">H.M<\/span>.&nbsp;<span data-scaytid=\"12\" data-scayt_word=\"Vlak\">Vlak<\/span>, since all eight activities cause blood pressure to rise.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span data-scaytid=\"13\" data-scayt_word=\"Vlak\">Vlak<\/span> said about two per cent of the population has a brain aneurysm. They are often symptomless and frequently harmless.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cYou shouldn\u2019t be scared because the likelihood of this happening is extremely rare,\u201d said <span data-scaytid=\"8\" data-scayt_word=\"Parikh\">Parikh<\/span>. \u201cI would encourage patients not to worry excessively about it and consult with their doctor if they feel at risk of an <span data-scaytid=\"2\" data-scayt_word=\"aneurysm.\u201d\">aneurysm.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Even if you do have an aneurysm, it\u2019s unlikely to bother you. \u201cWe think most aneurysms never rupture,\u201d said <span data-scaytid=\"14\" data-scayt_word=\"Vlak\">Vlak<\/span>, a neurologist at the Utrecht Stroke Centre at University Medical Centre in Utrecht, the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you have a brain aneurysm, drinking coffee, having sex or even getting angry may boost the risk of it rupturing, a new study suggests.
