{"id":16580,"date":"2014-09-29T07:28:09","date_gmt":"2014-09-29T07:28:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/bishops-declare-south-sudan-war-immoral\/"},"modified":"2014-09-29T07:26:28","modified_gmt":"2014-09-29T07:26:28","slug":"bishops-declare-south-sudan-war-immoral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/bishops-declare-south-sudan-war-immoral\/","title":{"rendered":"Bishops declare South Sudan war \u2018immoral\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{The Roman Catholic Church declared on Friday that the civil war in South Sudan is \u2018evil\u2019 and \u2018immoral,\u2019 saying that large-scale ethnic killing has created a cycle of fear and revenge, with perceptions that one tribe or another \u201cdeserves to rule.\u201d}<\/p>\n<p>South Sudan\u2019s Conference of Catholic Bishops concluded a three-day meeting in Juba on Friday, attended by bishops and other leaders of the Church, including the visiting Archbishop Charles Daniel Balvo, the envoy of the Pope, who heads the Roman Catholic Church.  <\/p>\n<p>A declaration signed by the bishops was read to the press on Friday by Archbishop Paulino Lokudu.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe the Catholic Bishops of South Sudan\u2026 solemnly declare that the current war in South Sudan is evil, as we have said in previous messages,\u201d reads the declaration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no moral justification for any further killing. We can accept no excuses nor conditions from any party or individual for continuation of the war. The fighting and killing must stop immediately and unconditionally.  Political and other grievances must indeed be addressed, but only when the fighting is stopped,\u201d it says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese issues are on the table in Ethiopia, and will be addressed in the political process. We declare before God that it is evil for any party to continue violence to try to further their political agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Atrocities\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The bishops added that the war has \u201conce again reinforced the culture of violence with which he have lived so many decades\u2026,\u201d adding, \u201chuman rights are still under threat, including freedom of speech. \u2026. it has created a humanitarian tragedy, thousands have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur traumatized population has been re-traumatized by atrocities,\u201d the statement says. \u201cOnce again we declare this war immoral, and we demand an immediate end to all hostilities so that these humanitarian concerns can be addressed.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Rise of tribalism\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The bishops stated, \u201cWe call attention to the rise of tribalism as a result of the conflict. Traditionally, the peoples of South Sudan do not hate each other\u2026 Large scale ethnic killing has created a cycle of fear, hatred and revenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur politics is become ethnic with perceptions from various communities that one tribe or other is favored, or that one tribe or another is underrepresented, or even that one tribe or another deserves to rule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe condemn tribalism and repeat our earlier call for \u2018one people\u2019 from every tribe, tongue and nationality.
