{THE Immigration Department in Kapiri Mposhi has arrested 67 Ethiopians for alleged unlawful entry into Zambia after the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) intercepted a Tanzanian containerised truck in which they were being ferried.}<\/p>\n
And a team of Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), immigration and police officers yesterday raided Lusaka\u2019s Marapodi township and arrested 35 suspected illegal immigrants.<\/p>\n
This comes barely a week after 48 other Ethiopians were arrested in Kapiri Mposhi for unlawful entry into Zambia after they were found in a containerised truck.<\/p>\n
The suspected prohibited immigrants were arrested on Saturday after ZRA officers discovered them hidden in a Tanzanian containerised Scania truck registration number T462 AHY around 17:30 hours.<\/p>\n
This is according to a statement issued in Lusaka yesterday by Immigration Department public relations officer Namati Nshinka.<\/p>\n
Mr Nshinka said the driver of the truck, a Tanzanian, managed to escape.
\n \u201cThe truck belongs to Haluwenge Transport Limited of Tanzania. They are scheduled to be moved to Kabwe for further investigations on Sunday [yesterday],\u201d Mr Nshinka said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Kabwe Magistrate\u2019s Court has convicted 48 Ethiopians who were last Monday intercepted in a Tanzanian containerised Scania truck registration number T977 BFT for unlawful presence.<\/p>\n
The 48 were fined K1, 000 each or in default 12 months simple imprisonment.
\n Mr Nshinka said the driver of the truck is yet to appear in court.<\/p>\n
And Ministry of Home Affairs public relations officer Moses Suwali said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that 35 illegal immigrants were arrested at Global Impact Ministries in Marapodi township.<\/p>\n
Mr Suwali said the team swung into action after receiving information from the members of public that the church was allegedly harbouring illegal immigrants.<\/p>\n
He said the 35 illegal immigrants were yesterday afternoon screened and that those found wanting will be prosecuted for entering Zambia without formalising procedures under the Immigration Act.<\/p>\n
