{"id":16403,"date":"2014-09-19T03:10:47","date_gmt":"2014-09-19T03:10:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/chinese-firm-starts-mapping-of-uganda-kenya\/"},"modified":"2014-09-19T03:12:12","modified_gmt":"2014-09-19T03:12:12","slug":"chinese-firm-starts-mapping-of-uganda-kenya","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/chinese-firm-starts-mapping-of-uganda-kenya\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese Firm starts mapping Uganda-Kenya-Rwanda railway routes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{A Chinese company has begun mapping routes on an $8 billion rail network in Uganda with construction work likely to begin in about three months, a government official said on Thursday.}<\/p>\n<p>China Harbor Engineering\u2014which earlier this week inked a deal to build a container port in Sri Lanka\u2014has started mapping routes and engineering designs for a network of standard-gauge railway lines. <\/p>\n<p>The route of the new lines will extend from Uganda\u2019s eastern border with Kenya to Rwanda as well as to oil-producing South Sudan over the next four to five years, Suzan Kataike, the spokeswoman for Uganda\u2019s works and transport ministry told The Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new standard-gauge lines will provide a cheaper and faster means of transport both for cargo and passengers,\u201d said Ms. Kataike.<\/p>\n<p>In May, Uganda\u2019s President Yoweri Museveni, Kenya\u2019s Uhuru Kenyatta, South Sudan\u2019s Salva Kiir and Rwanda\u2019s Paul Kagame signed an agreement with China\u2019s Prime Minister Li Keqiang for a range of regional rail projects. <\/p>\n<p>Kenya is constructing the initial phase of a line that will run from its port city of Mombasa.<\/p>\n<p>The first phase of Uganda\u2019s project will cover 1,000 kilometers, stretching from the country\u2019s eastern border with Kenya to Kigali and Gisenyi, along the border with the mineral-rich but restive Democratic Republic of Congo.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years the East African region has become a hot spot for investors following the discovery of oil and gas.
