{Energy ministers from Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania on Wednesday met to discuss a common project on the construction of a hydropower dam, Xinhua reported.

\u201cThis common project for the three countries is extremely important because access to energy remains under 20 percent of citizens in Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania,\u201d said Burundian Energy Minister Come Manirakiza at the launch of the 17th meeting of the Council of Ministers for the three countries. <\/p>\n
The dam is expected to generate some 80 megawatts by the beginning of 2019. <\/p>\n
\u201cA lot of preparatory activities have already been achieved for the common project on Rusumo Falls, but there are still some challenges,\u201d said Manirakiza. <\/p>\n
He said that some financial agreements have already been signed notably between those states and financial institutions like the World Bank. <\/p>\n
Manirakiza said the project started its effective implementation on July 11 this year. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m glad that the common project responds to requirements set by the World Bank,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
He said the project is to enter the decisive phase of execution, adding that the current meeting of the Council of Ministers is to plan activities within the execution phase of the project.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
