{"id":16291,"date":"2014-09-12T09:37:47","date_gmt":"2014-09-12T09:37:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/rwandan-students-embrace-the-culture-of-reading\/"},"modified":"2014-09-12T09:37:13","modified_gmt":"2014-09-12T09:37:13","slug":"rwandan-students-embrace-the-culture-of-reading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/rwandan-students-embrace-the-culture-of-reading\/","title":{"rendered":"Rwandan students embrace the culture of reading on International Literacy Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{On September 8th, the world celebrated International Literacy Day under the theme \u201cLiteracy for Sustainable Development.\u201d Rwanda\u2019s theme, \u201cStand Up for Literacy: Duhagurukire Gusoma\u201d adapted the international theme to fit local context and the country will be marking this important event with various activities throughout the country this week. } <\/p>\n<p>As part of the week\u2019s event, the Rwanda Library Services in partnership with Ministry of Sports and Culture, Rwanda Education Board, USAID, and others hosted an event at the Kigali Library for primary and secondary students from different schools the city. <\/p>\n<p>Students from FAWE Girls School, La Colombiere, and Lycee de Kigali engaged in lively debate about the newly released second edition of The New Rwanda, a collection of essays by various Rwandan writers, compiled by author Sondra Myers.  <\/p>\n<p>The library was buzzing with primary students taking computer lessons, participating in storytelling, arts and crafts and taking part in poetry competitions. The activities were carried out in English, French and Kinyarwanda.<\/p>\n<p>This event was graced by Minister of Culture and Sports, Hon. Joseph Habineza, Permanent Secretary from the Ministry Mr. Edward Kalisa and Jennifer Turatsinze, Director of Rwanda Library Services. Minister Habineza visited all the different activities and spoke with the students in attendance, encouraging them to contribute to developing a culture of reading because literacy is the key to their future. He extended his encouragement to parents, urging them to help their children to get interested in reading in general and in learning Rwanda\u2019s \u2018amateka\u2019, in particular. The Hon. Minister further prompted students not only to read more, but also to take an interest in writing, as that is how they will ensure that their stories live on.  <\/p>\n<p>The week concluded with the Rwanda Read General Assembly workshop on Thursday morning at Umubano Hotel. The workshop organized by the Government through REB, USAID and Rwanda Reads, brought together stakeholders who have the mandate to promote Literacy. The lobby featured stands with reading materials from Imbuto Foundation, Ni Nyampinga, Save the Children, Rwanda Library Services to name a few.
