{"id":161,"date":"2011-05-11T10:46:42","date_gmt":"2011-05-11T10:46:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/eac-to-study-regional-oil-pipeline\/"},"modified":"2011-05-11T10:43:03","modified_gmt":"2011-05-11T10:43:03","slug":"eac-to-study-regional-oil-pipeline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/eac-to-study-regional-oil-pipeline\/","title":{"rendered":"EAC to study regional oil pipeline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p><strong>The<br \/>\nEast African Community is set to undertake a feasibility study on the<br \/>\nconstruction of an oil product pipeline from Uganda to Rwanda, easing fuel<br \/>\nsupplies in the landlocked countries of Rwanda and Burundi, the <span data-scaytid=\"3\" data-scayt_word=\"EAC\">EAC<\/span> secretariat<br \/>\nsaid early this week.<\/strong><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The regional<br \/>\nbody has obtained a grant of at least $600,000 for the study from the African<br \/>\nDevelopment Bank, which will look at the viability of linking the two countries<br \/>\nto a pipeline project running from the Kenyan coast to Uganda, the <span data-scaytid=\"4\" data-scayt_word=\"EAC\">EAC<\/span> cited<br \/>\nPatrick <span data-scaytid=\"7\" data-scayt_word=\"Nyoike\">Nyoike<\/span>, the permanent secretary of Kenya\u2019s Ministry of Energy, as<br \/>\nsaying.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The<br \/>\nplan is to link Kigali [in Rwanda] by a pipeline from Kampala [Uganda], which<br \/>\nwill allow petroleum products to be accessed from the planned refinery in<br \/>\nUganda, as well as the existing refinery in Mombasa [on the Kenyan coast] and<br \/>\ninternational markets,&#8221; <span data-scaytid=\"8\" data-scayt_word=\"Nyoike\">Nyoike<\/span> was quoted as saying.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Uganda is<br \/>\nplanning to build a 150,000 barrel-a-day refinery in its oil-rich <span data-scaytid=\"11\" data-scayt_word=\"Albertine\">Albertine<\/span><br \/>\nRift basin following the discovery of at least a billion barrels of oil in the<br \/>\npast couple of years.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>In March,<br \/>\n<span data-scaytid=\"1\" data-scayt_word=\"U.K.-based\">U.K.-based<\/span> <span data-scaytid=\"12\" data-scayt_word=\"Tullow\">Tullow<\/span> Oil PLC agreed on a joint-venture deal with France oil major<br \/>\nTotal SA and China\u2019s <span data-scaytid=\"13\" data-scayt_word=\"CNOOC\">CNOOC<\/span> Ltd. for the development of the oil fields in the<br \/>\nbasin, which is expected to cost at least $10 billion.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span data-scaytid=\"5\" data-scayt_word=\"EAC\">EAC<\/span> member<br \/>\nstates are also planning to diversify energy sources within the region in order<br \/>\nto enhance security of energy supply, <span data-scaytid=\"9\" data-scayt_word=\"Nyoike\">Nyoike<\/span> was cited as saying.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nregional body has finalized studies on the proposed natural gas pipeline from<br \/>\nthe Tanzanian port of Dar <span data-scaytid=\"14\" data-scayt_word=\"es\">es<\/span> Salaam to Kenya\u2019s Mombasa in order to end<br \/>\n<span data-scaytid=\"15\" data-scayt_word=\"overreliance\">overreliance<\/span> on limited forms of energy. In February, Tanzania said that its<br \/>\ngas reserves had more than doubled to 7.5 trillion cubic feet following a<br \/>\nnumber of discoveries off the Tanzanian coast.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>It is<br \/>\nexpected that the project will contribute to the reduction of energy costs and<br \/>\nshield power generation from variability of weather and international crude oil<br \/>\nprices, <span data-scaytid=\"10\" data-scayt_word=\"Nyoike\">Nyoike<\/span> was cited as saying.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The <span data-scaytid=\"6\" data-scayt_word=\"EAC\">EAC<\/span><br \/>\nmember states are Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The East African Community is set to undertake a feasibility study on the construction of an oil product pipeline from Uganda to Rwanda, easing fuel supplies in the landlocked countries of Rwanda and Burundi, the EAC secretariat said early this week.
