{"id":15907,"date":"2014-08-21T09:56:20","date_gmt":"2014-08-21T09:56:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/president-zuma-blocked-from-delivering-speech\/"},"modified":"2014-08-21T09:56:00","modified_gmt":"2014-08-21T09:56:00","slug":"president-zuma-blocked-from-delivering-speech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/president-zuma-blocked-from-delivering-speech\/","title":{"rendered":"President Zuma Blocked From Delivering Speech"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-6734 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/tuut.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>{{An address to parliament by South Africa&#8217;s President Jacob Zuma has been halted by opposition MPs.}}<\/p>\n<p>Mr Zuma was responding to allegations that he had &#8220;unduly benefitted&#8221; from an upgrade to his private residence which cost taxpayers about $23m (\u00a313.8m).<\/p>\n<p>After saying the matter would be handled by government, MPs from the new Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) started chanting: &#8220;Pay back the money.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Parliament was then suspended and security called to oust the EFF group.<\/p>\n<p>Police entered parliament in Cape Town carrying riot shields, tear gas and batons but then aborted their plans to forcibly remove the EFF MPs.<\/p>\n<p>The EFF has 25 MPs in the 400-member parliament elected in May after gaining 6% of the national vote.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first election contested by the EFF, led by controversial former youth leader Julius Malema.<\/p>\n<p>He formed the EFF last year following his expulsion from the governing African National Congress (ANC) in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>A one-time ally of Mr Zuma, he had been sacked after the pair fell out, with Mr Malema calling for radical policies to ease poverty.<\/p>\n<p>The EFF often wear red workers&#8217; overalls in parliament.<\/p>\n<p>wirestory<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{{An address to parliament by South Africa&#8217;s President Jacob Zuma has been halted by opposition MPs.}} Mr Zuma was responding to allegations that he had &#8220;unduly benefitted&#8221; from an upgrade to his private residence which cost taxpayers about $23m (\u00a313.8m).
