The probe follows allegations in local media that he is a sex offender.<\/p>\n
Local media say they have seen court documents showing the father served three years for sexually molesting two girls under 10 in the late 1990s.<\/p>\n
The man and his wife paid a Thai surrogate mother to have their child, but took home only Gammy’s healthy sister when she had twins.<\/p>\n
State authorities told media they were now assessing his “suitability” to have a young child in his custody.<\/p>\n
A spokesman for Western Australia’s department for child protection and family support told media: “Last night we were made aware of certain information by the police regarding allegations of the father’s criminal background.”<\/p>\n
Gammy’s case has made international headlines since it broke late last month.<\/p>\n
Besides Down’s syndrome, the six-month-old baby has a congenital heart condition and a lung infection.<\/p>\n
Surrogate mother Pattharamon Chanbua claims his parents abandoned Gammy, but the parents have told local media they did not know of his existence.<\/p>\n
