{"id":146,"date":"2011-05-08T17:59:13","date_gmt":"2011-05-08T17:59:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/minibus-crash-kills-16\/"},"modified":"2011-05-08T19:53:45","modified_gmt":"2011-05-08T19:53:45","slug":"minibus-crash-kills-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/minibus-crash-kills-16\/","title":{"rendered":"Minibus crash kills 16"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A minibus crash on the <span data-scaytid=\"2\" data-scayt_word=\"Kigali-Gitarama\">Kigali-Gitarama<\/span> highway left 16 passengers dead on Saturday evening.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The public transport minibus was crushed by a cargo truck as it tried to overtake it on an exit route out of the city at a area popularly known as <span data-scaytid=\"4\" data-scayt_word=\"Kugiti\">Kugiti<\/span> <span data-scaytid=\"5\" data-scayt_word=\"Cyinyoni\">Cyinyoni<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The police and rescue teams made up of senior government officials, the Commissioner General of Police, Emmanuel <span data-scaytid=\"6\" data-scayt_word=\"Gasana\">Gasana<\/span> and Kigali City mayor , <span data-scaytid=\"7\" data-scayt_word=\"Fidele\">Fidele<\/span> <span data-scaytid=\"8\" data-scayt_word=\"Ndayisaba\">Ndayisaba<\/span>, locals and journalists including those from <span data-scaytid=\"16\" data-scayt_word=\"IGIHE.com\">IGIHE.com<\/span>, were quick to report to the scene<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The accident happened at about 18:30 outside Kigali, on the road towards <span data-scaytid=\"9\" data-scayt_word=\"Gitarama\">Gitarama<\/span>,&#8221; police spokesperson <span data-scaytid=\"10\" data-scayt_word=\"Theos\">Theos<\/span> <span data-scaytid=\"11\" data-scayt_word=\"Badege\">Badege<\/span> told the media.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The minibus carrying 19 passengers tried to overtake the truck but found itself facing an oncoming vehicle. On returning to the middle of the road it hit the truck.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The minibus was dragged to the side of the road by the truck and flattened,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Of the 19 passengers, 16 were killed. The three others were taken to hospital. The two people <span data-scaytid=\"12\" data-scayt_word=\"travelling\">travelling<\/span> in the truck were not hurt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Due the severity of the accident, the first victim was pulled out after a protracted four hour effort. The injured three were immediately rushed to hospital for intensive care.&nbsp;Those present in the truck were unhurt.<\/p>\n<p>The rescue mission lasted approximately six hours at 12.45 am.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A minibus crash on the Kigali-Gitarama highway left 16 passengers dead on Saturday evening.
