{"id":139,"date":"2011-05-07T20:02:56","date_gmt":"2011-05-07T20:02:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/kcb-to-pump-billions-into-struggling-subsidiaries\/"},"modified":"2011-05-07T19:53:31","modified_gmt":"2011-05-07T19:53:31","slug":"kcb-to-pump-billions-into-struggling-subsidiaries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/kcb-to-pump-billions-into-struggling-subsidiaries\/","title":{"rendered":"KCB to pump billions into struggling subsidiaries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p><strong>The Kenya Commercial Bank (<span data-scaytid=\"5\" data-scayt_word=\"KCB\">KCB<\/span>) group Board of Directors has approved an additional <span data-scaytid=\"1\" data-scayt_word=\"Sh1.9\">Sh1.9<\/span> billion capital injection to support the growth of the bank\u2019s struggling regional subsidiaries.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Group chairman Peter <span data-scaytid=\"19\" data-scayt_word=\"Muthoka\">Muthoka<\/span> said the increased investment is meant to help the subsidiaries speed up their financial performance, and yield better returns to the shareholders.<\/p>\n<p>The beneficiaries of the new funding include <span data-scaytid=\"6\" data-scayt_word=\"KCB\">KCB<\/span> Uganda (<span data-scaytid=\"2\" data-scayt_word=\"Sh1.1\">Sh1.1<\/span> billion), <span data-scaytid=\"7\" data-scayt_word=\"KCB\">KCB<\/span> Tanzania (<span data-scaytid=\"24\" data-scayt_word=\"Sh225\">Sh225<\/span> million) and <span data-scaytid=\"8\" data-scayt_word=\"KCB\">KCB<\/span> Rwanda (<span data-scaytid=\"25\" data-scayt_word=\"Sh557\">Sh557<\/span> million). With the exception of <span data-scaytid=\"9\" data-scayt_word=\"KCB\">KCB<\/span> Sudan, these subsidiaries returned an accumulated net loss of <span data-scaytid=\"26\" data-scayt_word=\"Sh259\">Sh259<\/span> million last year, diluting the Group\u2019s overall profitability.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Performed better<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-scaytid=\"10\" data-scayt_word=\"KCB\">KCB<\/span> Uganda reported a loss of <span data-scaytid=\"27\" data-scayt_word=\"Sh409\">Sh409<\/span> million, while <span data-scaytid=\"11\" data-scayt_word=\"KCB\">KCB<\/span> Tanzania and <span data-scaytid=\"12\" data-scayt_word=\"KCB\">KCB<\/span> Rwanda registered losses of <span data-scaytid=\"28\" data-scayt_word=\"Sh111\">Sh111<\/span> million, and <span data-scaytid=\"29\" data-scayt_word=\"Sh318\">Sh318<\/span> million, respectively. <span data-scaytid=\"13\" data-scayt_word=\"KCB\">KCB<\/span> Sudan, however, performed better than expected, returning a profit before tax (<span data-scaytid=\"30\" data-scayt_word=\"PBT\">PBT<\/span>) of <span data-scaytid=\"31\" data-scayt_word=\"Sh581\">Sh581<\/span> million.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<span data-scaytid=\"14\" data-scayt_word=\"KCB\">KCB<\/span> Sudan reported a good profit last year, and is poised for better returns in 2011 whereas <span data-scaytid=\"15\" data-scayt_word=\"KCB\">KCB<\/span> Rwanda and <span data-scaytid=\"16\" data-scayt_word=\"KCB\">KCB<\/span> Uganda are moving closer to profit making. <span data-scaytid=\"17\" data-scayt_word=\"KCB\">KCB<\/span> Tanzania is now stable, and should become more profitable going forwards,&#8221; said <span data-scaytid=\"20\" data-scayt_word=\"Muthoka\">Muthoka<\/span>. He, however, said all regional subsidiaries would be expected to break- even this year.<\/p>\n<p><span data-scaytid=\"21\" data-scayt_word=\"Muthoka\">Muthoka<\/span> also said the <span data-scaytid=\"18\" data-scayt_word=\"KCB\">KCB<\/span> board would be reviewing the operations of each subsidiary as it seeks the right business model which delivers increased returns to the investors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The board has agreed to increase investment in the subsidiaries this year to enable them accelerate their financial performance,&#8221; <span data-scaytid=\"22\" data-scayt_word=\"Muthoka\">Muthoka<\/span> told shareholders during the bank\u2019s 40th annual general meeting (<span data-scaytid=\"32\" data-scayt_word=\"AGM\">AGM<\/span>) in Nairobi, yesterday. <span data-scaytid=\"23\" data-scayt_word=\"Muthoka\">Muthoka<\/span> said the board has also approved wide-ranging business&nbsp;<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) group Board of Directors has approved an additional Sh1.9 billion capital injection to support the growth of the bank\u2019s struggling regional subsidiaries.
