{"id":12943,"date":"2014-03-06T03:04:10","date_gmt":"2014-03-06T03:04:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/niger-extradites-gaddafi-s-son-saadi\/"},"modified":"2014-03-06T03:04:02","modified_gmt":"2014-03-06T03:04:02","slug":"niger-extradites-gaddafi-s-son-saadi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/niger-extradites-gaddafi-s-son-saadi\/","title":{"rendered":"Niger Extradites Gaddafi&#8217;s Son Saadi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>{{The Libyan government says former leader Col Muammar Gaddafi&#8217;s son, Saadi, has been extradited from Niger and is now in custody in Tripoli.}}<\/p>\n<p>Pictures posted on the internet showed him having his head and beard shaved.<\/p>\n<p>Saadi Gaddafi, the former head of Libya&#8217;s football federation, fled after his father was killed in the 2011 revolution.<\/p>\n<p>He is accused of shooting protesters and other crimes during his father&#8217;s rule.<\/p>\n<p>The Libyan government made an announcement about Saadi Gaddafi&#8217;s extradition in a short statement early on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Libyan government received today Saadi Gaddafi and he arrived in Tripoli,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>The plane with Saadi, one of Col Gaddafi&#8217;s seven sons, landed at 02:50 local time (00:50 GMT).<\/p>\n<p>Two security sources later confirmed to the BC&#8217;s Rana Jawad that Saadi Gaddafi had been returned and was now in the hands of the Libyan judicial authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Niger had previously refused Libyan requests to extradite him, with the justice minister saying he was &#8220;certain to face the death penalty&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, Interpol issued a &#8220;red notice&#8221;, obliging member countries to arrest him.<\/p>\n<p>Saadi Gaddafi had reportedly resided in a state guesthouse in Niger&#8217;s capital, Niamey, after fleeing across the Sahara Desert.<\/p>\n<p>He is best known for a brief career in top-flight Italian football which was cut short by a failed drugs test, as well as his playboy lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Trial delays<br \/>\nSince the 2011 uprising, Libya&#8217;s new government has sought the extradition of several Gaddafi family members and ex-officials, with mixed success.<\/p>\n<p>Niger extradited Abdallah Mansur, a former top intelligence official, to Libya on 14 February.<\/p>\n<p>Mauritania also extradited Gaddafi&#8217;s former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi in January 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Libya&#8217;s highest-profile prisoner, Gaddafi&#8217;s son Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, has been held in the mountain town of Zintan since his capture in November 2011.<\/p>\n<p>While court proceedings against the prisoners have been initiated, trials have been set back by security concerns and procedural delays.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Gaddafi&#8217;s cousin and ex-envoy to Egypt, Ahmad Gaddaf-el-Dam, remains in Egypt despite Tripoli&#8217;s attempts to secure his extradition.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"spip-document spip-document-4460 aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/en-images.igihe.com\/jpg\/-0-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>{Images on Facebook showed Saadi Gaddafi before and after his head was shaved following his extradition}<\/p>\n<p>{wirestory}<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{{The Libyan government says former leader Col Muammar Gaddafi&#8217;s son, Saadi, has been extradited from Niger and is now in custody in Tripoli.}} Pictures posted on the internet showed him having his head and beard shaved.
