{"id":122,"date":"2011-05-05T13:03:04","date_gmt":"2011-05-05T13:03:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/fdlr-rebels-face-charges-over-mass-rapes\/"},"modified":"2011-05-05T12:59:43","modified_gmt":"2011-05-05T12:59:43","slug":"fdlr-rebels-face-charges-over-mass-rapes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/fdlr-rebels-face-charges-over-mass-rapes\/","title":{"rendered":"FDLR rebels face charges over mass rapes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p><strong>The official spearheading United Nations efforts to combat the<br \/>\nscourge of sexual violence committed during war yesterday welcomed the start of a<br \/>\ntrial in Germany of two Rwandans accused of ordering massacres and mass rape in<br \/>\nthe Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).<\/strong><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-scaytid=\"5\" data-scayt_word=\"Ignace\">Ignace<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-scaytid=\"6\" data-scayt_word=\"Murwanashyaka\">Murwanashyaka<\/span> and <span data-scaytid=\"7\" data-scayt_word=\"Straton\">Straton<\/span> <span data-scaytid=\"8\" data-scayt_word=\"Musoni\">Musoni<\/span> each face 39 charges of war crimes and 26<br \/>\ncounts of crimes against humanity over their alleged actions in the eastern DRC<br \/>\nin 2008-09.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors<br \/>\nin the German city of Stuttgart say the two men served as leaders in the<br \/>\nDemocratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (known by its French acronym of<br \/>\n<span data-scaytid=\"9\" data-scayt_word=\"FDLR\">FDLR<\/span>), a notorious militia accused of numerous atrocities in the eastern DRC in<br \/>\nrecent years.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Margot<br \/>\n<span data-scaytid=\"10\" data-scayt_word=\"Wallstr\u00f6m\">Wallstr\u00f6m<\/span>, the Secretary-General\u2019s Special Representative on Sexual Violence in<br \/>\nConflict, issued a statement in which she applauded German authorities for<br \/>\n\u201chaving apprehended these alleged perpetrators and for bringing them to<br \/>\n<span data-scaytid=\"1\" data-scayt_word=\"justice.\u201d\">justice.\u201d<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>German<br \/>\nlaw allows the prosecution of foreigners for crimes against humanity and war<br \/>\ncrimes committed elsewhere.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Ms.<br \/>\n<span data-scaytid=\"11\" data-scayt_word=\"Wallstr\u00f6m\">Wallstr\u00f6m<\/span> said the trial is \u201ca clear sign that there is no safe haven for<br \/>\nsuspected criminals and that impunity for conflict-related sexual violence is<br \/>\nnot an <span data-scaytid=\"2\" data-scayt_word=\"option.\u201d\">option.\u201d<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>She said<br \/>\nher office would continue to monitor the trial and all incidents of<br \/>\nconflict-related sexual violence closely.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The envoy<br \/>\nhas spoken out repeatedly about the widespread sexual violence taking place in<br \/>\nthe DRC, particularly in the far east, where many militia groups still clash<br \/>\nwith Congolese armed forces and attack civilians.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The official spearheading United Nations efforts to combat the scourge of sexual violence committed during war yesterday welcomed the start of a trial in Germany of two Rwandans accused of ordering massacres and mass rape in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
