Deputy Police Spokesman Patrick Onyango said police officers were injured when they were pelted with stones by demonstrators angered by the impeachment of Erias Lukwago as mayor of Kampala, Uganda’s capital. He said police responded by firing tear gas<\/p>\n
Lukwago was ousted Monday by city councilors as Kampala’s mayor after a government tribunal earlier this month found him guilty of abuse of office, incompetence and misconduct.<\/p>\n
The charges were brought against Lukwago in May at a time the Ugandan authorities were trying to quell a resurgence of opposition protests against President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power for 27 years.<\/p>\n
