{The Security Council on Friday failed to adopt a resolution for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to defer the trials of Kenyan leaders for one year.}<\/p>\n
The African Union had requested the Council to adopt a resolution to postpone the trials of President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto.<\/p>\n
They face charges before the International Criminal Court (ICC) related to the violence that followed the 2007 presidential elections in which more than 1,000 people died.
\n Seven of the 15 members of the Security Council voted in favour while eight others abstained.<\/p>\n
Nine votes in favour, including the five permanent members of the Council that have a veto power, are needed for a resolution to pass.<\/p>\n
Ambassador Eugene Gasana of Rwanda, one of the non-permanent members of the Council expressed disappointment about the result.<\/p>\n
“The failure to adopt this draft resolution, endorsed by the whole African continent is a shame. Yes indeed, it is a shame. Let it be written today in history that the Security Council failed Kenya and Africa on this issue. ”<\/p>\n
Members of the Council which abstained argued that the issue should not be discussed before the Security Council.<\/p>\n
