{"id":112,"date":"2011-05-04T13:27:46","date_gmt":"2011-05-04T13:27:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/two-suspected-rwandan-militia-leaders-to-face\/"},"modified":"2011-05-04T13:26:12","modified_gmt":"2011-05-04T13:26:12","slug":"two-suspected-rwandan-militia-leaders-to-face","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/two-suspected-rwandan-militia-leaders-to-face\/","title":{"rendered":"Two suspected Rwandan militia leaders to face German court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The trial of two Rwandans charged with crimes against humanity and war crimes for violence carried out against civilians in Congo has opened in southern Germany.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The trial is the first in Germany to be carried out under the principle of universal jurisdiction that allows states to pursue foreigners for crimes carried out abroad.<\/p>\n<p>German prosecutors have charged <span data-scaytid=\"1\" data-scayt_word=\"Ignace\">Ignace<\/span> <span data-scaytid=\"2\" data-scayt_word=\"Murwanashyaka\">Murwanashyaka<\/span> and <span data-scaytid=\"3\" data-scayt_word=\"Straton\">Straton<\/span> <span data-scaytid=\"4\" data-scayt_word=\"Musoni\">Musoni<\/span> with leading a mostly ethnic <span data-scaytid=\"5\" data-scayt_word=\"Hutu\">Hutu<\/span> militia to kill more than 200 people, carry out numerous rapes and force children to serve as soldiers in the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda.<\/p>\n<p>It was not immediately clear if the men would address the court at the opening on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Both men were living in Germany at the time of their November 2009 arrest.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The trial of two Rwandans charged with crimes against humanity and war crimes for violence carried out against civilians in Congo has opened in southern Germany.
