{"id":111,"date":"2011-05-04T12:06:09","date_gmt":"2011-05-04T12:06:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/rwandan-neighbour-kobagaya-not-at-ethnic-killings\/"},"modified":"2011-05-04T12:01:25","modified_gmt":"2011-05-04T12:01:25","slug":"rwandan-neighbour-kobagaya-not-at-ethnic-killings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.igihe.com\/english\/rwandan-neighbour-kobagaya-not-at-ethnic-killings\/","title":{"rendered":"Rwandan neighbour: Kobagaya not at ethnic killings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p><strong>A former <span data-scaytid=\"7\" data-scayt_word=\"neighbour\">neighbour<\/span> of a Rwandan accused of participating in the 1994 Rwandan genocide testified Tuesday that he never saw the man at any of the ethnic killings in the area where they lived.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jean-Marie <span data-scaytid=\"8\" data-scayt_word=\"Byiringiro\">Byiringiro<\/span> took the stand during the third day of testimony in the <span data-scaytid=\"1\" data-scayt_word=\"U.S\">U.S<\/span>. immigration trial of <span data-scaytid=\"15\" data-scayt_word=\"Lazare\">Lazare<\/span> <span data-scaytid=\"16\" data-scayt_word=\"Kobagaya\">Kobagaya<\/span>. <span data-scaytid=\"9\" data-scayt_word=\"Byiringiro\">Byiringiro<\/span>, who admitted killing a 12-year-old Tutsi boy in exchange for a goat as part of the genocide, said he was at nearly all of the ethnic killings in the area where he and <span data-scaytid=\"17\" data-scayt_word=\"Kobagaya\">Kobagaya<\/span> lived.<\/p>\n<p><span data-scaytid=\"18\" data-scayt_word=\"Kobagaya\">Kobagaya<\/span>, 84, is in a federal courtroom in Kansas, USA, fighting charges of unlawfully obtaining <span data-scaytid=\"2\" data-scayt_word=\"U.S\">U.S<\/span>. citizenship in 2006 with fraud and misuse of an alien registration card. The government, which is seeking to revoke his citizenship, contends he lied to <span data-scaytid=\"3\" data-scayt_word=\"U.S\">U.S<\/span>. immigration authorities about his involvement in the genocide. <span data-scaytid=\"19\" data-scayt_word=\"Kobagaya\">Kobagaya<\/span> contends he is innocent.<\/p>\n<p>The arsons and killings related to <span data-scaytid=\"30\" data-scayt_word=\"Kobagaya\u2019s\">Kobagaya\u2019s<\/span> case allegedly occurred in a rural community known as <span data-scaytid=\"32\" data-scayt_word=\"Birambo\">Birambo<\/span>, where <span data-scaytid=\"20\" data-scayt_word=\"Kobagaya\">Kobagaya<\/span> and his family lived at the time, as well as at Mount <span data-scaytid=\"33\" data-scayt_word=\"Nyakizu\">Nyakizu<\/span>, where thousands of <span data-scaytid=\"34\" data-scayt_word=\"Tutsis\">Tutsis<\/span> had sought refuge.<\/p>\n<p>The government contends <span data-scaytid=\"21\" data-scayt_word=\"Kobagaya\">Kobagaya<\/span> was a wealthy and influential leader who incited the arsons and killings in his community, along with Francois <span data-scaytid=\"39\" data-scayt_word=\"Bazaramba\">Bazaramba<\/span>, a former Rwandan pastor who was sentenced last year to life imprisonment by a Finnish court for committing genocide against the Tutsi minority in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>Most of <span data-scaytid=\"43\" data-scayt_word=\"Byiringiro\u2019s\">Byiringiro\u2019s<\/span> testimony implicated <span data-scaytid=\"40\" data-scayt_word=\"Bazaramba\">Bazaramba<\/span>, not <span data-scaytid=\"22\" data-scayt_word=\"Kobagaya\">Kobagaya<\/span>. In fact, <span data-scaytid=\"10\" data-scayt_word=\"Byiringiro\">Byiringiro<\/span>, who served seven years in prison for his role in the genocide, told jurors that <span data-scaytid=\"23\" data-scayt_word=\"Kobagaya\">Kobagaya<\/span>, a <span data-scaytid=\"44\" data-scayt_word=\"Hutu\">Hutu<\/span> born in neighboring Burundi, didn\u2019t have any power in the community because he was a refugee in Rwanda.<\/p>\n<p>When a mob gathered at <span data-scaytid=\"45\" data-scayt_word=\"Bazaramba\u2019s\">Bazaramba\u2019s<\/span> house before the homes of <span data-scaytid=\"35\" data-scayt_word=\"Tutsis\">Tutsis<\/span> were set on fire on April 15, 1994, <span data-scaytid=\"11\" data-scayt_word=\"Byiringiro\">Byiringiro<\/span> said, <span data-scaytid=\"24\" data-scayt_word=\"Kobagaya\">Kobagaya<\/span> came out of his house only because people were in front of it. It was <span data-scaytid=\"41\" data-scayt_word=\"Bazaramba\">Bazaramba<\/span> who spoke to the crowd, <span data-scaytid=\"12\" data-scayt_word=\"Byiringiro\">Byiringiro<\/span> said. During the speech, <span data-scaytid=\"42\" data-scayt_word=\"Bazaramba\">Bazaramba<\/span> called on <span data-scaytid=\"25\" data-scayt_word=\"Kobagaya\">Kobagaya<\/span> to explain to the crowd that the <span data-scaytid=\"36\" data-scayt_word=\"Tutsis\">Tutsis<\/span> were bad people.<\/p>\n<p><span data-scaytid=\"13\" data-scayt_word=\"Byiringiro\">Byiringiro<\/span> said through a translator that <span data-scaytid=\"26\" data-scayt_word=\"Kobagaya\">Kobagaya<\/span> did tell people that \u201cwe did not know the badness of the <span data-scaytid=\"46\" data-scayt_word=\"Tutsis\u201d\">Tutsis\u201d<\/span> and that if they didn\u2019t kill them, the <span data-scaytid=\"37\" data-scayt_word=\"Tutsis\">Tutsis<\/span> would kill the <span data-scaytid=\"47\" data-scayt_word=\"Hutus\">Hutus<\/span>. However, <span data-scaytid=\"14\" data-scayt_word=\"Byiringiro\">Byiringiro<\/span> told the jury he didn\u2019t see <span data-scaytid=\"27\" data-scayt_word=\"Kobagaya\">Kobagaya<\/span> join the rest of the crowd of more than 100 people in the arsons.<\/p>\n<p>His testimony came a day after another neighbor, <span data-scaytid=\"48\" data-scayt_word=\"Valens\">Valens<\/span> <span data-scaytid=\"49\" data-scayt_word=\"Murindangabo\">Murindangabo<\/span>, testified that <span data-scaytid=\"28\" data-scayt_word=\"Kobagaya\">Kobagaya<\/span> told the mob to burn down the houses of <span data-scaytid=\"38\" data-scayt_word=\"Tutsis\">Tutsis<\/span> so they wouldn\u2019t return and ordered the killings of others.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, defense attorney Kurt <span data-scaytid=\"52\" data-scayt_word=\"Kerns\">Kerns<\/span> questioned <span data-scaytid=\"50\" data-scayt_word=\"Murindangabo\">Murindangabo<\/span>, a former teacher who has served more than 10 years in prison for his role in the genocide, about an eight-page government form he had filled out as part of his own confession. The form asked him to list all witnesses and accomplices, but it didn\u2019t have <span data-scaytid=\"31\" data-scayt_word=\"Kobagaya\u2019s\">Kobagaya\u2019s<\/span> name.<\/p>\n<p><span data-scaytid=\"51\" data-scayt_word=\"Murindangabo\">Murindangabo<\/span> insisted an attachment had been lost that listed <span data-scaytid=\"29\" data-scayt_word=\"Kobagaya\">Kobagaya<\/span> as participating in the genocide.<\/p>\n<p>The defense also hammered on the money he was receiving for his testimony \u2014 $96 a day while he is in the United States and $274 when he was in Rwanda for meeting with investigators.
