{{French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Tuesday that France will propose a UN Security Council resolution setting out conditions for Syria to place its chemical weapons under international control and accept that they will be dismantled.}}<\/p>\n
Fabius said the resolution \u2013 under Chapter 7 of the UN charter covering possible military and non-military action to restore peace \u2013 would warn of \u201cextremely serious\u201d consequences for Damascus if it breached those conditions.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur aim is to condemn the August 21 massacre carried out by the Damascus regime in the strongest possible terms,\u201d he told a news conference in Paris.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe resolution will state that Damascus must reveal and dismantle its chemical weapons stockpile and accept that it should be placed under international control.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fabius said that Syria will face \u201cserious consequences\u201d if it fails to comply with the resolution, and called for those responsible for the attacks to face trial at the International Criminal Court.<\/p>\n
Fabius said Syria has a \u201cconsiderable\u201d stockpile of \u201cat least 1,000 tonnes\u201d of chemical weapons.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrance aims to eliminate the threat of chemical weapons, and to protect the Syrian people,\u201d he said. \u201cAll options remain on the table.\u201d<\/p>\n
