Ecowas shifts fete over Nigeria power transfer

{The official celebration of regional bloc Ecowas 40th Anniversary has been postponed to avoid a clash with the inauguration of the Nigeria president.}

The Ecowas fete was originally scheduled for May 28 in in the Nigerian capital Abuja.

President-elect Muhammadu Buhari will be inaugurated on May 29, after defeating the incumbent, Mr Goodluck Jonathan, in the March 28 election.

A new date for the Ecowas anniversary will be announced after the 47th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government, which will take place Tuesday in Accra, Ghana.

President Jonathan leaves Abuja on Tuesday to attend the Accra meeting.

A statement by Mr Reuben Abati, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, said on Monday that the summit coincided with the 40th anniversary of Ecowas.

Military rank

During the Ghana summit, Ecowas will receive reports on the current situation in Burkina Faso and Guinea Bissau and deliberate on issues of democratic consolidation and regional peace and stability.

President Jonathan will be accompanied to Accra by Foreign Affairs minister Aminu Wali; House of Representatives Majority Leader Mulikat Akande and some of his principal aides.

He is expected back in Abuja at the conclusion of the one-day summit.

Meanwhile, Gen (Rtd) Buhari will drop his military rank beginning May 29 after his inauguration.

The spokesman of the presidential campaign organisation, Mr Garba Shehu, said Gen Buhari would after his inauguration not entertain “General” in his name.
