Early results show President Kagame in the lead

Preliminary results from Rwanda’s election show President Paul Kagame with a strong lead against his two challengers.

Kagame looked set for a landslide victory Friday as election results trickling in showed the incumbent with an average 98 percent of the vote in districts counted.
Provisional turnout is 97 percent of the 6.8 million registered voters.

Results from some rural districts show President Paul Kagame with numbers exceeding 95 percent.

Around the country, Rwandans gathered to hear the results, with some already celebrating a win for Kagame.
