  • 10 things you need to know before you get married

    10 things you need to know before you get married

    {Marriage is a wonderful thing to experience, but sometimes, it’s often made out to be something so perfect without challenges, and that is not true. There is no such thing as a perfect marriage, there’ll always be one challenge or another to face the moment you embark on that journey, and unless you’re prepared for it by getting in the right frame of mind, and knowing the basics of relationship and marriage, you’ll not be able to handle those challenges when they come because you’ll be taken unawares.}

    So it is a matter of importance that you know the following before you get married.

    1. You must know that there’s no such thing as a perfect marriage. No marriage is without its own flaws, no matter how little. However, your own marriage can be successful if you want it to be. You must be willing to make sacrifices, forgive, understand, tolerate and coexist with you partner in order for you to have a good marriage.

    2. It takes two to tango. Marriage, like anything involving more than one person requires joint efforts from all involved for it to be successful. You and your partner must work together to stay together. Let him/her be your partner in everything, not just in bed. Share everything, discuss everything and always keep each other in the loop regarding whatever concerns either of you. No marriage can work without concerted efforts from the man and the woman.

    3. Keep your marriage away from your friends. Not a bad thing to keep friends as a married person, but you must know the manner of things you discuss with them. Keep all topics relating to your spouse and marriage away from them — sometimes, those who you regard as your ‘friends’ are nothing but foes waiting to bring you down and see you unhappy, and other times, they could give you wrong advice that wouldn’t augur well for your relationship.

    4. People change. Just because your partner was calm and sweet before marriage is no guarantee that they’ll stay that way all their life; so you must be prepared for any possibility. Everyone has a bad side to them; you can only wish that they do not have to expose that part.

    5. Wife-beaters are not made in a day, they usually start from somewhere. If your man shows signs of violence more than once before marriage, he’s most likely to be an incorrigible wife-beater even after marriage.

    6. In the same vein, cheaters are not made in one day, they also start from somewhere. If your partner cheats on you even once before marriage, and you go ahead to marry him, be prepared for constant heartbreak. Old habits die hard.

    7. Nobody wants to be in a marriage where there’s little money and material gains to be enjoyed, but that doesn’t mean that you should marry for money. People who marry for money instead of love are usually miserable for as long as they’re in that marriage.

    8. Marry for love; marry someone you love so much, but never marry someone who doesn’t love you as much as you do them because you’ll never be valued in that marriage.

    9. Cheating does not have anything to do with love, it’s just an action born out of a moment of lust and immaturity. A man/woman can love you and still cheat on you.

    10. You must protect your marriage. Just because you got lucky enough to be married to them does not mean that other people would not want to have a piece of what you’re enjoying. There’ll always be one man/ woman out there trying to put your marriage asunder, and they’ll do anything to realise that objective, therefore, you must continuously strive to keep your marriage together by doing everything you can to please and keep your partner happy. Look good for them, love them, compliment them, tease them, spoil them, give them attention, and treat them as if you just met them. That is the only way your marriage will continue to feel fresh and survive.

  • Nearly 400,000 Syrians starving in besieged areas

    Nearly 400,000 Syrians starving in besieged areas

    {Deaths from malnutrition reported as three towns wait desperately for promised food aid to arrive from Damascus.}

    As aid agencies prepare to deliver food to Madaya, on the outskirts of Damascus, and two other besieged towns in Idlib province, an estimated 400,000 people are living under siege in 15 areas across Syria, according to the UN.

    A deal struck on Saturday permits the delivery of food to Madaya, currently surrounded by forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and the villages of Foua and Kefraya in Idlib, both of which are hemmed in by rebel fighters.

    Due to a siege imposed by the Syrian government and the Lebanese Hezbollah group, an estimated 42,000 people in Madaya have little to no access to food, resulting in the deaths of at least 23 people by starvation so far, according to the charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

    Reports of widespread malnutrition have emerged, some of them suggesting that Madaya residents are resorting to eating grass and insects for survival.

    In Kefraya and Foua, about 12,500 people are cut off from access to aid supplies by rebel groups, including al-Nusra Front.

    On December 26, Syrian government forces set up a checkpoint and sealed off the final road to Moadamiyah, a rebel-controlled town on the outskirts of Damascus, demanding that opposition groups lay down their arms and surrender.

    The Moadamiyah Media Office, run by pro-opposition activists, estimates that 45,000 civilians are stuck in the area for more than two weeks.

    The organisation said on Saturday that a siege that started in April 2013 and lasted a year, resulted in the deaths of 16 local residents due to a lack of food and medicine.

    It said the current one has killed one local resident so far this year: an eight-month-old boy who died from malnutrition on January 10.

    Dani Qabbani, a Moadamiyah-based media activist, said the child died because of “the crippling siege being imposed by Assad’s militias”.
    “They couldn’t help him here in the only field hospital in the city,” he told Al Jazeera. “Assad’s checkpoints prevented his family from hospitalising him in Damascus.
    “If the situation continues for another week, we are expecting a disaster for the 45,000 civilians [in Moadamiyah].”

    Describing the local population as worn down and scared, Qabbani said “they don’t want to go through what they did in 2013 again”.
    Sharif Nashashibi, a London-based analyst of Arab political affairs, says the government-imposed sieges in places like Moadamiyah and Madaya have put rebel fighters under “double pressure”.

    “These sieges don’t just wear down the fighters, it also causes them to see the population around them suffering and raises the concern that the population could turn against them,” he told Al Jazeera.

    “These sieges are war crimes. The government is collectively punishing the population of that area because of the presence of ‘enemy’ fighters.”

    The UN reported in December that the Syrian government and allied militias have also placed under siege more than 181,000 people in the Damascus outskirts, including Daraya and Ghouta, as well as in Zabadani, near the Lebanon border.

    Separately, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group has imposed a siege on more than 200,000 in Deir Az Zor in Syria’s east.

    “Besieging Syrian civilians is wrong, whoever the perpetrator,” Nashashibi told Al Jazeera.

    “One cannot be selective in one’s outrage over the suffering of Syrian civilians and plausibly claim to have a moral compass.”

    The ongoing Syrian conflict started as a largely unarmed uprising against President Bashar al-Assad in March 2011, but morphed into a full-blown civil war that has killed more than 250,000 people and turned more than 4.3 million others into refugees, according to statistics by the United Nations.

    Juliette Touma, a spokesperson for the UN children’s agency UNICEF, says the lack of access has made it impossible to assess the humanitarian needs of the communities in question.
    “These are areas that have been under siege by parties to the conflict,” she told Al Jazeera.

    “We can’t point a finger to one party and not another because more than one party to the conflict is involved in besieging various communities.”

    In addition to struggling to get food and medicine, Touma said, the affected areas also endure severe disruptions in, if not a total lack of, other basic services, including electricity and education.

    Furthermore, she said, communities classified as besieged are not the only ones in desperate need of humanitarian access.

    “Due to raging battles and increasing violence, there are more than 4.5 million people living in areas classified by the UN as ‘hard to reach’,” Touma said, adding that more than half of those are children.

    Rival groups protest in Germany over sex assaults

    {Angela Merkel proposes tougher laws on criminal asylum seekers as protests turn violent in Cologne.}

    Competing protests have been held in Cologne, Germany in response to the series of violent assaults against women on New Year’s Eve.

    About 450 supporters of the anti-Islam PEGIDA movement were facing off with 1,300 counter-demonstrators behind the city’s main train station on Saturday, police said.

    After bottles and firecrackers were hurled at officials, police cancelled the march by the far-right groups, a spokeswoman said. Police used water canon to disperse protesters.

    The attacks on New Year’s Eve caused tensions in Germany because the victims described the offenders as “foreigners” and “migrants”, of which the country has accepted about 1.1 million this year – more than any other European nation.

    Cologne’s federal police have said they received 170 criminal complaints connected to the New Year’s festivities, including 120 cases of sexual assaults.

    The German government said 31 suspects were briefly detained for questioning. Eighteen of them were asylum seekers.

    The detained included nine Algerians, eight Moroccans, five Iranians, four Syrians, two Germans and one person each from Iraq, Serbia and the US.

    Al Jazeera’s Dominic Kane, reporting from the protests, said the left-wing demonstrators, who protested against PEGIDA, clearly outnumbered the right-wing protesters.

    Police sources estimated that the left-wing demonstration was about four to five times as big as the right-wing march.

    “This shows the difference of opinion in the refugee debate that has been going on in Germany,” our correspondent said.

    Tougher laws

    German chancellor, Angela Merkel, has proposed tougher laws which include expelling asylum seekers convicted of committing crimes in Germany, in response to the assaults.

    Merkel’s party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), discussed on Saturday deportation for asylum seekers who commit crimes as an important facet of their new 10-point plan for the nation’s future.

    At the two-day summit in Mainz the CDU discussed if asylum seekers should be expelled sooner. On Saturday, the party confirmed their plans.

    “What happened on New Year’s Eve are despicable criminal acts that demand decisive answers,” Merkel said after a meeting among the top ranks of her CDU in Mainz.

    “The right to asylum can be lost if someone is convicted on probation or jailed,” Merkel added.

    The police chief of of Cologne was dismissed on Friday amid mounting criticism of his force’s handling of New Year’s Eve sexual assaults and robberies.

  • Deal struck for aid to reach besieged Syrian towns

    Deal struck for aid to reach besieged Syrian towns

    {Aid agencies say food and medicine set to reach Madaya and two other Idlib villages, where thousands are starving.}

    Aid agencies say a deal has been reached to send food and medicine into beseiged towns in Syria, where tens of thousands of people are in danger of starving to death.

    The aid deal agreed on Saturday will result in humanitarian supplies being sent to the opposition-held town of Madaya at the Lebanese border, and to two villages in the northwestern province of Idlib that are blockaded by rebels.

    Aid agencies have warned of widespread starvation in Madaya, where some 40,000 people are at risk.

    The UN said on Thursday that Damascus had agreed to allow access to all three areas, but did not say when the delivery would take place.

    “Both date and time have been set. Aid will go to three towns on Monday morning, all at the same time,” said a source familiar with the matter. A second, pro-Syrian government source confirmed the details.

    Images of emaciated bodies and hungry children have led to an international outcry over the use of siege tactics by all sides in the war.

    News of the agreement came on Saturday as scores of people were killed and more than 100 others injured in Russian air strikes in Syria’s Idlib province.

    The volunteer-run Syria Civil Defence told Al Jazeera that Saturday’s Russian air strikes targeted the town of Maarat al-Numaan, 290km north of the capital, killing at least 43 people and injuring at least 150 others.

    “Our volunteers are still in the area that was targeted by the air strikes. They are still trying to help those injured and affected by the attack,” the coordinator for the Idlib Syria Civil Defence told Al Jazeera.

    “Many of those injured are in very serious conditions, the death toll is expected to rise,” he added.

    In another attack in Idlib province, the Syria Civil Defence said at least three people were killed and four others were injured in air strikes that targeted a school and a fire department in Ariha.

    Known also as the White Helmets, the Syria Civil Defence is a group of volunteer rescuers formed in 2013 that now numbers more than 2,700 volunteers.

    The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights put the death toll at 39, adding that the air strikes targeted a court and a prison in Maarat al-Numaan.

    Anas Maarawi, a media activist in Idlib, told Al Jazeera that the attacks targeted a court and a prison controlled by al-Nusra Front in Maarat al-Numaan.

    “The first floor of the court was targeted in addition to a prison. We are getting reports that at least 53 have been killed in these air strikes,” Maarawi said.

    Syria ready to attend Geneva

    In another development, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem told the UN special envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, on Saturday that Syrian regime was ready to attend the talks in Geneva expected on January 25.

    SANA, Syria’s state news agency, said that Muallem stressed the necessity of having a list of the opposition groups who are going to attend the talks.

    Muallem said that efforts for a political solution and the UN Security Council’s latest, relevant resolutions are linked to the credibility of the efforts of fighting terrorism, including forcing the countries which support terrorism to stop backing it, SANA reported on its website.

    The conflict in Syria, which has killed over 250,000 people according to the UN, will mark its fifth year in March.

    The Syrian Observatory said last week that more than 55,000 people, including almost 30,000 civilians, have been killed in Syria during the year 2015 alone.

  • Massive Hailstorm Pummels South Africa; Shopping Mall Roof Collapses

    Massive Hailstorm Pummels South Africa; Shopping Mall Roof Collapses

    {A powerful hailstorm struck a suburb of Johannesburg Saturday, leading to the collapse of a shopping center roof. The images from the storm show hail covering the ground like a thick coating of snow, an unusual sight during what is now summer in South Africa. }

    The Key West Shopping center in Krugersdorp was evacuated after its roof collapsed around 4 p.m. local time, Krugersdorp News reported. Ambulances arrived at the scene but there was only one reported injury. The news site reported that this is already considered to be one of the biggest hail storms in Krugersdorp in years.

    “The Johannesburg area has been in the grips of extremely hot and dry air this week, establishing new all-time record high temperatures,” weather.com senior digital meteorologist Nick Wiltgen said. “It appears that some cooler and more humid air started to push in from the south and east on Saturday, likely triggering these thunderstorms. Weather balloon data from Pretoria a few hours before the hailstorm showed an obvious intrusion of cold dry air in the upper atmosphere, a factor that strongly favors damaging hail when overall conditions are favorable for thunderstorm development.”

    The South African Weather Service issued a number of severe thunderstorm watches and warnings in the northeastern portion of the country Saturday afternoon and evening, including Johannesburg and the nearby national capital, Pretoria.

    Wiltgen said Johannesburg established a new all-time record high of 100.9 degrees Fahrenheit (38.3 degrees Celsius) Wednesday, only to break it again Thursday with a high of 102.0 F (38.9 C). The previous record of 97.7 F (36.5 C) had just been set Nov. 11, 2015.

    Pretoria has broken or tied its all-time record high temperature, previously set in 1960, five times this spring and summer. The city broke it on Nov. 10 and 11, hitting 104.5 F (40.3 C) on the latter; broke it again Dec. 7, hitting 105.8 F (41.0 C); tied that record this past Wednesday, Jan. 6; then crushed the record Thursday with a high of 108.9 F (42.7 C).

    Extreme heat is also taking its toll in the western portion of the country, with numerous fire danger warnings and two deaths from heatstroke reported Saturday. According to SABC News, a total of 11 people have died from heat stroke in the region in just the past few days.

    It’s been a record-breaking spring and summer in South Africa so far. In October, the town of Vredendal broke the all-time world record high for the month of October, hitting 119.1 F (48.4 C). Earlier this week, Augrabies Falls National Park reached a scorching 119.5 F (48.6 C).

  • 5 ways to handle not being appreciated

    5 ways to handle not being appreciated

    {Everyone loves to be appreciated for everything they do and in everything they do — in our jobs, family, relationships and in the society at large.}

    We all want to be acknowledged and appreciated for every good deed we do, but this wouldn’t always happen, and that’s a harsh reality of life.

    There are some ways you can actually handle this feeling of not being appreciated.

    {{1. LET IT BE A LEARNING PROCESS}}

    Working without being appreciated can be seen as a learning process. As ironical as it sounds, you would learn to do good things without actually waiting for rewards and acknowledgment and you would also learn to be tolerating and as well patient. Having this attitude would give you a gritty attitude that would help you later in life.

    {{2. DO IT FOR YOURSELF
    }}

    When you have the mentality that you are doing something for your team, your partner, family or someone else then it could demoralising and hard when they don’t appreciate it. But when you have the mentality that you are doing it for yourself then you make it easier for yourself and you would care less whether you are appreciated or not.
    {{
    3. CELEBRATE YOURSELF}}

    If people aren’t going to be grateful for what you do for them then celebrate yourself for what you actually do for others. If no one would acknowledge your efforts, there is nothing wrong in acknowledging your efforts.
    {{
    4. REMEMBER THAT PEOPLE GET USED TO GOOD DEEDS}}

    Give someone money and they would highly appreciate it for the first time; when you keep giving that same person money everyday, he might get used to it and take your efforts for granted — this is a typical fact of life. As hard as it sounds, you should see it as a strength not a weakness when people get used to your good deeds.
    {{
    5. APPRECIATE OTHERS}}

    Almost everyone on earth has that habit of taking things for granted and overlooking the simple things that are done for them. It’s better to teach people how to appreciate, not with your words but your actions. Appreciate others for the little things they do for you, and by this you teach them with an exemplary lifestyle.

    It’s really difficult to cope when you are not being appreciated, but this tip would help you overcome that feeling of not being appreciated.

    Investigators think it was a case of “involuntary manslaughter”, one official told Russian TV, but have launched a criminal case.

    The story went viral after the CCTV footage came to light.

    Yelena Kozyreva from the local investigations committee said they believed there was no malicious intent in the doctor’s actions.

  • 6 things to do if you want to have a good year

    6 things to do if you want to have a good year

    {Why wait for a new year to make your life better? My problem with many new year resolutions is that they are mostly short-term and many forget their resolutions by February 1st.
    }

    Below are 6 things to do if you want to have a good year

    {{1. DECIDE WHERE YOU WANT TO BE}}

    Congrats, you made it to this year but there are important things you should do if you want a better year. You have to decide where you want to be a year from now if you want to have a good year. You can’t have an outstanding year if you don’t first decide where you want to be.
    {{
    2. FIGURE OUT HOW TO ACHIEVE YOUR TARGETS FOR THE YEAR}}

    It’s okay deciding where you want to be a year from now but you wouldn’t achieve that if you don’t figure out how to achieve your targets. If your target this year is to lose weight and get in shape, you have to figure out how you have to achieve this which would include finding out the type of diet and exercise you need.
    {{
    3. HAVE A PLAN}}

    Saying you are going to lose weight this year isn’t a plan. The steps you need to take to achieve your weight lose is the plan. By having steps, you give yourself daily set targets that would help you achieve your long-term target for the year. So if you desire to lose weight and get into shape a year from now, jogging for 30 minutes every morning is a concrete plan to have.
    {{
    4. HAVE SET GOALS AND MILESTONES}}

    Having set goals and milestones would help you achieve your long-term targets. You need goals to measure your progress. If your weekly goal is losing 5 kg, it becomes easy to measure your progress. If you don’t lose up to 5 kg any week, you know you need to work even harder. Having set goals gives you even more motivation at each checkpoint.
    {{
    5. SHARE WHAT YOU ARE DOING WITH LOVED ONES}}

    The importance of sharing what you hope to achieve with loved ones is that it helps you become accountable. Sharing your plans with your loved will help keep you in check as it motivates you not to let your loved ones down and also yourself. Sharing with your loved ones means they would encourage you to stay motivated and continue on your path to success.
    {{
    6. SET OUT TODAY TO BEGIN ACCOMPLISHING YOUR GOALS}}

    You don’t have to wait till January 1st to make changes to your life. You should start today and not wait till tomorrow. If you want to make a change in your life, make a decision to start today. Today is always the best day to make a change.

  • 9 things every couple should do before getting married

    9 things every couple should do before getting married

    {Setting certain things in order before getting married would make your marriage better. There are some things couples should do before getting married; it would help set their marriage in the right direction.}

    Below are certain things couples ought to do before getting married.

    {{1. DISCUSS THEIR EXPECTATIONS OF THE MARRIAGE}}

    Marriage is usually between two different people who have spent a bulk of their lives apart and could probably have different mentality and expectations. When they discuss their expectations of the marriage, it would help give them an understanding of what they want individually and collectively — and this would help the marriage in the long-term.

    {{2. DISCUSS YOUR PERSONAL GOALS}}

    This is another important thing to do before getting married to your partner. A lot of the times, many couple get married without really knowing the other partner’s personal goal. It’s even worse when the husband stops the wife from working so she can take care of the family, or the wife complains bitterly about the nature of the man’s job that gives him less time for the family.

    When you discuss your personal goals with each other and what it would take to achieve them, it’s easier to create an understanding and strike out a way to help balance things out.

    {{3. KNOW EACH OTHER’S FAMILY}}

    Like they say, marriage isn’t only between individuals but families as well. Couples ought to spend time with each other’s families — this would even help create a bond between both families, and of course, the marriage would benefit from this.

    Also, you would understand your partner better when you spend time with their family; this would give you a deeper knowledge of your partner’s mentality, behaviour and mode of doing things.
    {{
    4. SHARE SECRETS}}

    Some secrets could jeopardise the marriage when it’s known at a later date. Any secret that your partner ought to know should be told before marriage. When couples do this, they even build trust among each other without knowing.

    {{5. SPEND TIME WITH EACH OTHER}}

    Of course you have to spend time with each; this is non-negotiable. When you spend time with each other, you learn more about each other and know how to make each other happy. It’s important to start the learning culture before marriage than when you are married.

    {{6. BUILD FRIENDSHIPS }}

    The fact that you are married doesn’t really mean you throw away all your friends. Friends are an important part our lives. If you and your partner can learn to build a circle of friends then it would help provide stability to your marriage and as well happiness.

    {{7. HAVE A FINANCIAL PLAN / GOAL}}

    Finance is an important part of everything, marriage included. It’s important for couples to have knowledge on each other’s stance on money. Don’t be shy to reveal your financial weakness as well; it would be okay if your partner knows now than later.

    When couples have a financial plan / goals even before they get married, it would put less pressure on them when they are eventually married.
    {{
    8. LEARN HOW TO HANDLE ISSUES}}

    Issues usually come up when you are married, but the difference between a successful and unsuccessful marriage lies in how they handle issues. It’s never too early to learn how to solve problems and handle issues; it would help make your marriage quarrel proof.

    {{9. LEARN WHAT YOU CAN AND CANNOT TOLERATE

    If you have what you cannot tolerate in a marriage, it’s unfair to tell your partner when you are already married than before getting married. Couples should aim to know what they can and cannot tolerate before getting married. This would help keep partners in check so they don’t go out of line.

    When you do these nine things before getting married to your partner, it would help set a solid foundation for a successful marriage.
