    Nyange School for heroes monument, survivors long for surgical operations, bereaved families lament neglect, government promises support

    Nyange Secondary School in Ngororero district of Western Province will soon be recognized as an institution of the brave and awarded thus under Imena category.
    This was confirmed during an extraordinary cabinet meeting that convened at Village Urugwiro presided over by President Paul Kagame.

    The cabinet meeting agreed to erect a monument that tells of the bravery of Nyange students that refused to succumb to ethnic dogmas that led to their massacre.

    The brutal raid at Nyange school was committed in the night of 18th March 1997, where infiltrators ordered students to divide into groups of Hutus and Tutsis. Students refused the directive saying they are all Rwandans.Seven of the students were killed.

    Some 40 Survivors of the raid formed Komezubutwari Association through which they advocate for health and education support to the survivors and the rest of the community. Some of the survivors need surgical operation from specialized doctors abroad.

    However, parents of the seven children killed at Nyange School say that they have not received special support except condolences they receive from Komezubutwari Association.

    The ministry of sports and culture, Uwacu Julienne has previously said that in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, they will seek how to help these Imena heroes access educations.

    Regarding health care, minister Uwacu said that they have started working with Rwanda Military Hospital and King Faysal to identify who can be treated inside the country and then seek support to get health treatment overseas for those whose medical complications can’t be handled in Rwanda.

  • DR Congo mines ‘use child labour’

    DR Congo mines ‘use child labour’

    {Human rights organisation Amnesty has accused Apple, Samsung and Sony, among others, of failing to do basic checks to ensure minerals used in their products are not mined by children.}

    In a report into cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, it found children as young as seven working in dangerous conditions.

    Cobalt is a a vital component of lithium-ion batteries.

    The firms said that they had a zero tolerance policy towards child labour.

    The DRC produces at least 50% of the world’s cobalt. Miners working in the area face long-term health problems and the risk of fatal accidents, according to Amnesty.
    It claimed that at least 80 miners had died underground in southern DRC between September 2014 and December 2015.

    It also collected the testimonies of children who allegedly work in the mines.
    Paul, a 14-year-old orphan, started mining when he was 12 and told researchers: “I would spend 24 hours down in the tunnels. I arrived in the morning and would leave the following morning … I had to relieve myself down in the tunnels … My foster mother planned to send me to school, but my foster father was against it, he exploited me by making me work in the mine.”

    UNICEF estimates that there are approximately 40,000 children working in mines across southern DRC.

    In response to the report, Apple said: “Underage labour is never tolerated in our supply chain and we are proud to have led the industry in pioneering new safeguards.”

    It said that it conducts rigorous audits on its supply chain and any supplier found hiring underage workers is forced to:
    fund the worker’s safe return home
    finance the worker’s education at a school chosen by the worker or his/her family
    continue to pay the worker’s wages
    offer him or her a job when he or she reaches legal age to work.

    On cobalt specifically it added: “We are currently evaluating dozens of different materials, including cobalt, in order to identify labour and environmental risks as well as opportunities for Apple to bring about effective, scalable and sustainable change.”
    Samsung said that it had a “zero tolerance policy” towards child labour and that, it too, conducted regular and rigorous audits of its supply chain.

    “If a violation of child labour is found, contracts with suppliers who use child labour will be immediately terminated,” it said.

    Sony commented: “We are working with the suppliers to address issues related to human rights and labour conditions at the production sites, as well as in the procurement of minerals and other raw materials.”

    The Amnesty report, which was jointly researched with African Resources Watch (Afrewatch), traced how traders buy cobalt from areas where child labour is rife, selling it on to firm Congo Dongfang Mining (CDM), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Chinese mineral giant Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt Ltd.

    Amnesty contacted 16 multinationals who were listed as customers of the battery manufacturers, who in turn source minerals from Huayou Cobalt.

    One company admitted the connection while four others were unable to say for certain the source of the cobalt they used. Five denied sourcing the mineral from the firm, despite being listed as customers in company documents and two others said that they did not source cobalt from DRC.

    Six firms said that they were investigating the claims.

    “It is a major paradox of the digital era that some of the world’s richest, most innovative companies are able to market incredibly sophisticated devices without being required to show where they source raw materials for their components,” said executive director of Afrewatch (Africa Resources Watch) Emmanuel Umpula.

    “The abuses in mines remain out of sight and out of mind because in today’s global marketplace, consumers have no idea about the conditions at the mine, factory and assembly line. We found that traders are buying cobalt without asking questions about how and where it was mined.”

    Mark Dummett, business and human rights researcher at Amnesty said that mining was “one of the worst forms of child labour”.

    “The glamorous shop displays and marketing of state of the art technologies are a stark contrast to the children carrying bags of rocks and miners in narrow man-made tunnels risking permanent lung damage,” he said.

    “Millions of people enjoy the benefits of new technologies but rarely ask how they are made. It is high time the big brands took some responsibility for the mining of the raw materials that make their lucrative products.

    “Companies whose global profits total $125bn (£86.7bn) cannot credibly claim that they are unable to check where key minerals in their productions come from,” he said.
    It should be noted that the majority of the children working in the mining industry in DRC do not enter the underground mines but perform a variety of tasks on the surface, including scavenging for ore and sorting minerals that have been mined underground.

    Many of the children who work in the mining industry dig for cobalt in the discarded waste

  • 9 wrong things in life almost everyone does

    9 wrong things in life almost everyone does

    {I really love this quote “you only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough”. There are certain mistakes and wrong things almost everyone does in life and many don’t even realise it until it’s too late.
    }

    Below are some of those wrong things you ought to stop doing.

    {{1. NOT KEEPING IN TOUCH AS YOU OUGHT TO}}

    You probably have that old friend or relative that’s a bit far from you and you always keep promising and planning to call or pay a visit — which you never do. Most times, you get to regret this when the person is no more or when it’s just too late.

    It’s important to keep in touch with your friends, family and loved ones — never wait till it’s too late.
    {{
    2. GETTING USED TO FAVOURS}}

    People get used to favours after it’s been done repeatedly and worse still, many get used to favours to the point where they now demand it as a right. If someone does a favour for you for a thousand times, appreciate it a thousand times.
    {{
    3. NOT APPRECIATING THE LITTLE THINGS}}

    People take things for granted to the point where little things don’t matter to them anymore. Don’t wait till you reach a huge milestone before you celebrate or appreciate it. Appreciate the little things in life, even if it’s just the simple things like being alive.

    {{4. SEEKING OTHER PEOPLE’S VALIDATION}}

    This is another wrong thing many people do in life. When you live your life according to what other people might say or do then you are living the wrong way. You don’t have to live your life seeking validation from others.
    {{
    5. TYING THEIR HAPPINESS TO MATERIAL THINGS AND OTHERWISE}}

    You must have surely heard someone say “I’d be happy when I have a new car” or “I’d be happy when I’m married”. The truth is that people like this would rarely get happy after tying their happiness to an item, even when they actualise their goals.

    When you tie your happiness to something, you don’t live in today anymore and that’s a risk.
    {{
    6. FEEL EVERYTHING HAS TO BE PERFECT}}

    Many people feel that everything has to be perfect before they become happy or live a fulfilled life. This is a terrible way to live your life. Things can’t always be perfect; try to find happiness even in today’s imperfection.
    {{
    7. TO THINK PROBLEMS SHOULD GO AWAY QUICKLY}}

    Everyone hates to be faced with life’s challenges and many only wish that problems should come and go quickly. Life could bring certain challenges and rather than wish them away, face the challenges with all determination, while still living life to the fullest.

    {{8. LIVE LIFE ON WISHES
    }}

    It’s good to have goals, it’s good to have ambitions, but it’s terrible to live life on wishes. Have goals, have ambitions, have dreams and work hard to achieve them. It’s wrong to only keep wishing and wishing – and many people are guilty of this.

    {{9. LIVING IN REGRET}}

    Many live their life in regrets and the worst part about living in regrets is that regrets wouldn’t solve the problem or even bring a solution; it would only make things worse for you.

    Like Paulo Coelho once said: “People never learn anything by being told, they have to find out for themselves.” Think about the wrong things you do continually in life and try to stop them.

  • 8 things that can make you unattractive and you don’t even know

    8 things that can make you unattractive and you don’t even know

    {Everyone wants to be seen as attractive, but in reality, many put up attitudes that would make them unattractive and disliked by people.
    }
    No matter how good-looking you are, your attitude and behaviour can make you lose your charm and instead make you unattractive.

    Check out some of those things that can make you unattractive without your knowing.

    {{1. SELF-CENTREDNESS}}

    Self-centredness is one trait that can make you seem unattractive. When all you think about is yourself and no one else, people who are close to you wouldn’t see you as attractive anymore.

    {{2. BOSSY}}

    So many people feel that being bossy is a sign of leadership; they have to be bossy to exert authority. Being bossy would only show the inhuman part of you and that can make you unattractive.

    {{3. FOCUS ON YOUR OUTER BEAUTY ALONE}}

    When you focus on your outer beauty and leave your inner beauty to rot then you can lose your attraction. No matter how beautiful you look on the outside, real beauty comes from within; this is the reason some people who are really beautiful on the outside could be seen as unattractive by people who know them.
    {{
    4. RUDENESS}}

    Rude people aren’t attractive; being rude make you lose your charm with people. People would stop seeing you as attractive when you are rude and impolite.
    {{
    5. YOU SEE EVERYTHING AS COMPETITION
    }}

    There are some people who see everything as a competition and that’s a despicable character. People would find you unattractive when all you do is compete with everyone, including your friends.

    {{6. YOU DON’T SEE THE GOOD IN OTHERS}}

    There are some people who don’t see the good in others but themselves. This kind of people won’t celebrate your success but would expect you to celebrate theirs, and they would try to belittle your achievements.
    {{
    7. BEING NEGATIVE-MINDED}}

    Everyone wants to be associated with people who think positively. People who are negative minded have this negative energy around them that makes them unattractive no matter how good-looking they are facially.

    {{8. DISHONESTY}}

    A dishonest person is an unreliable person. A dishonest person can never be trusted and this kind of person is never great to be with. Dishonest people also have other despicable characters that can turn people off.

    Being attractive doesn’t only come from your facial beauty. You can have the beautiful face and still be unattractive to people once they know you better. However, there are people who don’t really have that outer beauty but are loved wherever they go.

    Are you killing your attractiveness?
