  • Scientist discover the secret to looking forever young

    Scientist discover the secret to looking forever young

    {If you want to look forever young, this is definitely for you. British scientists have discovered ways to rejuvenate old cells back into younger ones.}

    The researchers from Newcastle University conclusively proved that mitochondria, the batteries of the cells, are essential for ageing.

    The researchers believe they are closer to reversing aging after the discovery that ageing cells became much more similar to younger cells when mitochondria were eliminated from ageing cells.

    Before now, scientists have struggled to understand exactly how mitochondria caused aging of cells even though they already had a clue that mitochondria played a role in the ageing of cells. So this discovery is very important.

    After eliminating mitochondria from ageing cells, the levels of inflammatory molecules, oxygen free radicals and expression of genes which are among the makers of cellular ageing dropped to the level that would be expected in younger cells.

    So if you dream of living forever young, the key to achieving that is almost here.

    The study was published in the EMBO Journal.

    Two rescued from Taiwan quake rubble as time runs out

    {Over 100 people are still thought to be trapped inside collapsed building after Saturday’s powerful quake in Tainan.}

    A woman found shielded under the body of her husband was pulled out alive from a toppled high-rise apartment building in Tainan, 48 hours after a powerful quake struck southern Taiwan killing at least 36 people.

    Local legislator Wang Ting-yu told reporters on Monday that the rescued woman, Tsao Wei-ling, was found lying under her dead husband. Their two-year-old son, who was also killed, was found lying nearby.

    Rescuers also confirmed on Monday that a second survivor – a man called Li Tsung-tian – had been pulled out of the rubble.

    More than 100 people are still missing after Saturday’s earthquake with almost all the dead found in the toppled Wei-guan Golden Dragon Building in Tainan city.

    Rescue efforts are focused on the wreckage of the 17-storey building, where 117 people are listed as missing and are suspected to be buried deep under the rubble.

    Al Jazeera’s Rob McBride, reporting from outside the collapsed building, said the rescue effort had reached a critical point.

    “It has been three days, and it’s understood that those stuck under the rubble and still alive won’t be able to last longer without food and water.

    “Lots of questions are being asked about how this building was constructed. There are a lot of stories floating around about the builder. You could almost say he is the most wanted man in Taiwan right now. Everyone is trying to find him,” he said.

    Tainan mayor William Lai said Tsao and Li were the only signs of life at present, although rescuers were continuing to look for others.

    “We have not given up on even the tiniest of possibilities,” he told reporters.

    Rescuers continued to scramble over the twisted wreckage of the building as numbed family members stood around, waiting for news of missing relatives.

    President-elect Tsai Ing-wen, who won election last month, said there needed to be a “general sorting out” for old buildings to make sure they were able to cope with disasters like earthquakes.

    “There needs to be a continued strengthening of their ability to deal with disasters,” she said during a visit in Tainan.
    Outgoing president Ma Ying-jeou is also scheduled to visit.

    Chinese President Xi Jinping conveyed condolences to the victims, state news agency Xinhua reported late on Sunday, and repeated Beijing’s offer to provide help.

    S Africa farmers devastated by El Nino drought

    {Farmers in the Free State province say dry spells are common but current drought is unprecedented.}

    Senekal, South Africa – It is being described as the worst drought to have hit South Africa in 20 years.

    Five out of the country’s nine provinces have been declared disaster zones as dry conditions triggered by the El Nino weather pattern continue to devastate the country.

    Borrie Erasmus, a farmer whose family has worked and lived on the same land in the Free State province for the past five decades, told Al Jazeera he had not seen anything like it.

    “On our farm, there has never been a time that there has not been any maize in December. We could not even try planting seeds. It has been drier than ever,” Erasmus said.

    The drought is costing South African farmers more than an estimated $600m in lost crops. While the government says it will be spending $19m on assisting farmers, it also suggested that farmers should start adapting to changing weather patterns.

    READ MORE: Southern Africa’s drought leaves millions hungry

    “We can’t continue relying only on dry agriculture,” Senzeni Zokwana, South Africa’s minister of agriculture, told Al Jazeera.

    “We need to put more funding so that we can build our capacity to put most of our production on irrigation which will mean new dams, which will mean new infrastructure.”

    Al Jazeera weather presenter Richard Angwin says El Nino, which strictly refers to the surface warming of the eastern and central Pacific Basin, has had a knock-on effect across much of the world.

    This phenomenon was particularly strong in 2015.

    On Sunday, Bheki Cele, South Africa’s deputy minister of agriculture, forestry and fisheries told the Reuters news agency the drought was still not a national disaster.

    “As we are experiencing this kind of drought, for some reason God has been kind and late rains did come, and we think the six million tonnes (of maize) we were looking to import – we have downgraded that to four,” he said.

    “The only hope is that rains continue – if they do we might be out of the woods,” Cele said, adding: “We will not declare a national disaster.”

  • Never wear white to a wedding plus 5 other dos and don’ts of wedding guest attire

    Never wear white to a wedding plus 5 other dos and don’ts of wedding guest attire

    {There seems to be a wedding for us to attend every weekend. Someone we know (family, close friends, friends from afar and those who think we are friends) gets married every weekend. I am certain someone somewhere has a wedding to attend this weekend but just before you do, there are some style dos and don’ts you should note}

    {{1. NEVER WEAR WHITE TO A WEDDING}}

    So many wedding guests have broken this very old and simple rule. The white colour in a wedding is exclusive for the bride so it’s a colour every wedding guest should avoid. It’s one of the most important days in the life of the bride and the bride needs to stand out from the crowd. Avoid wearing whites or any variation of whites to a wedding. It’s not your wedding so keep those whites gowns you have in your closet.

    {{2. THINK FLORAL PRINTS}}

    Weddings are all about romance and love so you should go for a romantic look when attending a wedding. Floral prints are perfect for weddings. So go for floral prints when attending a wedding.

    {{3. DON’T WEAR REVEALING CLOTHES}}

    A wedding is no place to look all sexy; please avoid the sexy look when attending a wedding. Avoid wearing anything overly sexy or revealing and a wedding isn’t the place for your bra straps and pants to be seen. The attention should be on the bride and her gorgeous gown and not on your pants or butts.

    {{4. THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS IS A YES}}

    If you are confused about what to wear, go for the little black dress that flatters your figure but you should also note that a head-to-toe black isn’t a good idea for a wedding (the head-to-toe black should be reserved for funerals). Don’t forget to accessorise.

    {{5. AVOID WEARING JEANS AND A TEE}}

    I believe everyone already knows this by now but for those that don’t, please a wedding isn’t an event to wear jeans and a tee. There is no reason good enough for wearing jeans and a tee and please don’t give me the “I love being casual” statement.

    {{6. WEAR SHOES YOU ARE COMFORTABLE IN}}

    I hate to attend weddings and see ladies struggle with their heels. I advise you wear something you are comfortable in. Just because I said you should wear something you are comfortable in is no reason to pick up just any shoe; go for something comfortable and stylish too. Weddings involve lots of dancing, walking around and standing so mid-height heels, dressy sandals, wedges, and even chic ballet flats are all good options for a wedding.

    Huye youth volunteers in anti-crime drive

    {The Rwanda National Police calls on Members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (RYVCP) in Huye District for their contribution in crime prevention and urged them to enhance their outreach to ensure they stamp out crimes in their community.}

    The call was made by the District Police Commander (DPC), Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Francis Muheto during a meeting with members of RYVCP in Huye held on February 5.

    SSP Muheto urged them to be more vigilant so as to achieve their ultimate goal of having a crime-free Rwanda.

    “You can only achieve your goal of ensuring public safety through community policing; you have to always remind the public that ensuring security begins with an individual,” said SSP Muheto.

    He picked out drug abuse as one of the key areas that need urgent attention from youth volunteers saying that the knowledge they have about effects of drug abuse should be disseminated to a wider community to ensure public safety.

    SSP Muheto urged them to rally for more cooperation with security agencies in sharing timely information that would assist in crime prevention, detection and arrest of criminals.

    “Rwanda National Police is committed to facilitating you with all possible means and cooperating with you to ensure that we collectively keep our country safer,” he said.

    According to the Huye district coordinator, Dieudonné Kayitakirwa, “stamping out crimes requires vigilance and we cannot achieve that when we deal with effects of crimes, instead we should dwell more on preventive measures.”

    Kayitakirwa reminded his colleagues about their mandate and urged them to always consult the authorities whenever they face any challenge.

    He thanked the police for continuously equipping them with knowledge of how best they can execute their responsibilities.

    Rwanda National Police continuously reaches out to the youth and has trained members of the RYVCP on crime prevention.

    The organization that is made up of 1,000 members countrywide, support communities by carrying out crime prevention awareness programmes in schools and communities against drug abuse, corruption ‘ gender and domestic violence, among others.

    Community-oriented policing is a strategy adopted by RNP that focuses on building ties and working closely with members of the communities to overcome crime in their localities.

Even though our spring well has inadequate water, citizens should not fetch lake water for it is not clean,” she said.

  • 5 signs your partner is still lying you

    5 signs your partner is still lying you

    {Science has proven that everyone lies or has at least told a lie.}

    Lies can range from a simple white lie to a sophisticated one, but this doesn’t change the fact that a lie is still a lie.

    Telling a lie in a relationship is even worse, and it’s terrible when your partner won’t stop lying to you, time after time.

    Some people always keep acts that would prompt them to tell a lie or two, while some even have compulsive lying disorders. Either ways, no one loves to be lied to.

    These are some signs that show your partner is still lying to you.

    {{1. CONFLICTING STORIES}}

    Liars tend to tell conflicting stories; your partner might tell you something today and twist it up in a week’s time, or tell someone else an entirely different story. When your partner keeps telling conflicting stories then it’s a huge sign that your partner is still lying to you.

    {{2. THEIR BODY LANGUAGE TELLS THEM OFF}}

    Lying isn’t all that easy; a good lie is when the story you are telling matches your body language — but, not everyone can actually pull this off. When your partner’s body language differs from the lie that’s been told then it is a sign that something isn’t just right.

    {{3. THEY HATE WHEN THE STORY IS BROUGHT UP AGAIN}}

    When your partner puts up a tense behaviour anytime that story is brought up again, then it could probably be because your partner is telling a lie or isn’t telling the whole truth.

    {{4. WHEN YOUR PARTNER PUTS UP AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOURS}}

    This is a typical act many lying partners put up in a bid to evade the truth and also blame their partner. Many lying partners tend to become angry or put up an aggressive behaviour when confronted for a lie that they have probably told. They do this so that they can make you feel guilty rather than admit that they are telling a lie.

    {{5. YOUR INSTINCTS}}

    Sometimes, you just have to go with your instincts. When your partner is telling you a tale to cover an act and your instincts just won’t agree, it’s more likely that your partner is hiding something. More often than not, we tend to go against our instincts and end up regretting.

    When you’re dating a perpetual liar and they still put up any of these acts, it’s more likely that your partner hasn’t changed from his / her lying ways.
