  • Kenya:Students kill 70-year-old man over witchcraft claims

    {The students are said to have hit Mr Bamama with huge sticks and stones, before fleeing the school compound.}

    A 70-year-old man was on Friday killed by students outside Abubakar Integrated School’s mosque in Tsunguli Village in Matuga Sub-County, Kwale County.

    Athman Bamama died after students descended on him just after performing his Friday prayers at the mosque, which is adjacent to his house.

    The students are said to have hit Mr Bamama with huge sticks and stones, before fleeing the school compound.

    Confirming the incident, area village elder Omar Mwamaisha said the incident happened at around 1:30pm.

    Mr Mwamaisha said he was attracted by the noise of students who were shouting at the top of their voices.

    He added that there was no one at the scene when he arrived at the Islamic institution. The old man’s lifeless was lying down in a pool of blood behind the mosque.

    “I saw him lying on his face with marks on his head as if he had been beaten with a blunt objects like a stick or stone, with blood all over him,” he said.

    Matuga police chief (OCPD) Patrick Oduma confirmed the incident, saying police officers have already launched investigation on circumstances which led to Mr Bamama’s death.

    {{ACCUSED OF WITCHCRAFT}}

    A relative who refused to be mentioned due to fear of victimisation said the old man used to work at the institution as a cleaner but the head teacher, Mohammed Mtulu, fired him.

    The relative added that the decision was made after the management accused him of witchcraft as the students at the institution, especially female students, used to be disturbed by demons.

    “I remember he once came to my house and told me that the head teacher and students do not want him at the institution. A few days later, he was sacked,” the relative said.

    The police chief ruled out the possibility of closing the school over the death, saying it was not the first time in the country that someone had been killed over witchcraft allegations

    “Mistakes do happen everywhere therefore we are only going to deal with the prime suspects and the decision to close the school will be made by the Ministry of Education,” he said.

    The director of the institution, Masoud Mwandemba, arrived at the school hours later and was asked by detectives to explain where the head teacher was when the incident occurred.

    Mr Mwandemba was not in a position to answer, saying he only called to inform the head teacher about the issue while he was holding a meeting in another institution in Likoni area.

    “There must be somebody who was around when the incident occurred. I know that on Fridays the students normally break from classes at around 11:30am,” he said.

    The deceased’s body was carried by detectives to Msambweni Referral Hospital mortuary.

    The institution has previously had issues of radicalisation of youths and it has been on the police watch-list and several raids have been conducted in the past.

    Administrators inspect suspected witchcraft paraphernalia unearthed during a raid in Langa Langa, Nakuru, on November 10, 2011. A man has been killed in Kwale County on accusations of practising witchcraft.
  • Children who grow up among many books tend to be richer

    {According to a new study published in the Economic Journal, Children who have a large number of books in the house when they are growing up tend to be higher earners later in life.}

    Economists Giorgio Brunello, Guglielmo Weber and Christoph Weiss found that, “whereas individuals in rural areas were most affected by [school] reforms [over the period studied], those with many books enjoyed substantially higher returns to their additional education”.

    An extra year of schooling increased a man’s average lifetime earnings by 9%.

    However, those brought up with very few books at home only saw a 5% rise in lifetime earnings resulting from an extra year’s education. For those with a large number of books, the rise was 21%.

    Hopefully, many parents would start raising their children up with many books.

  • Study finds that 52% of adults expect to have better sex when they are on holidays

    {According to a study by sexual wellbeing brand Durex, 52 percent of adults expect better sex on holiday, but 60 percent are left disappointed, admitting that the reality didn’t quite live up to their expectations.}

    The survey questioned over 2000 adults to arrive at the result. The survey found that almost a fifth of them said their phones and tablets get in the way of their sex life while on vacation, with 15% admitting that they have less sex on holiday than they do at home because of their tech.

    Forty percent responded that they are less likely to instigate sex if their partner is on their phone in bed, and 41% admitted that evenings on holiday can be spent in bed together concentrating on separate phones rather than each other.

    Fifty-nine percent also said that they, their partner or both have too much screen time, and more than half of those respondents felt their relationship suffers as a result. Seventy-two of the 2000 respondents even admitted to using phones during sex.

    The results of the survey were released to coincide with brand’s #DoNotDisturb campaign, a social experiment video looking at the effect of tech and smartphones on couple’s bedroom activity while on vacation.

    Durex believes that the results of the survey, the social experiment, and a follow-up scientific study conducted with real couples, all suggest that turning off tech in the bedroom could help turn on your partner, and help couples meet their holiday “sexpectations.”

  • 6 tips to being alone and happy

    {Being alone doesn’t really mean loneliness; you can actually be alone and be happy.
    }

    Having loads of friends and being in a relationship might be lovely, but if you find yourself with too little friends and not in a relationship, you have cause to still be happy — and these tips would show you just how.

    {{1. LISTEN TO YOURSELF}}

    Being alone is a time you can listen to yourself, meditate with your inner mind and ask yourself deeper questions about life.

    {{2. UNDERSTAND THAT YOU ARE A VALUABLE PERSON}}

    Don’t let someone tell you otherwise, that you are away from the crowd doesn’t make the crowd better than you. Understand that you are a valuable person — the perfect version of yourself.

    {{3. ENJOY THE SILENCE}}

    Sometimes, silence can be worth the value of gold; you wouldn’t understand the importance of silence until it’s lacking in your life. Enjoy the silence around you when alone and use it as an opportunity to be creative and open your mind.

    {{4. DO THINGS YOU LOVE}}

    Rather than moan and complain about being alone, use that opportunity to do things you love and you would be surprised at how time flies and how much you could enjoy your company.

    {{5. LEARN HOW TO ENJOY YOUR COMPANY}}

    Your company could only be boring if you think it’s boring. Learn to enjoy your company, learn to find solace with yourself, do things you love doing and enjoy every bit of it.

    {{6.MAKE PLANS}}

    Your life has more meaning when you make plans and pursue it, and there is no better time to make plans than when you are alone.

    Whether you are an introvert or you find yourself being alone, not by your choice but by circumstance, you should learn to be happy and enjoy every bit of it, rather than sulk, moan, complain and wish while your life flies by.

  • How long should sex last?

    {Most men are under enormous pressure to last longer in bed but how long should sex really last? How long is considered inadequate and how long is considered inadequate?}

    Dr Brendan Zietsch, a psychologist from the University of Queensland did a research on this subject and wrote about his findings in an article for The Conversationalist.

    500 couples from around the world used a stop watch to measure the time from penetration to ejaculation and Dr Zietsch used the data for his research.

    The findings from the research revealed that the time sex lasted ranged from 33 seconds to 44 minutes. The average time sex lasted across all couples was 5.4 minutes.

    With the average time for sex across couples set at 5.4 minutes, should we consider sex under five minutes as bad sex?

  • 5 ways to get the woman you have always desired

    {Every man has a woman they wish they could be with and there’s nothing absolutely wrong with that. But one mistake most men make is that they fail to make themselves desirable.}

    If you want the woman of your dreams, you have to make yourself the man of her dreams.

    {{1. BE PREPARED TO BE JUST A FRIEND}}

    Many men are not ready to be just friends with a woman they desire and I honestly think this is wrong. Just because she turned you down is no reason to stay away from her. Remain friends with her and you might end up winning her heart as she gets to know you better.

    {{2. DON’T MAKE PROMISES YOU CAN’T FULFILL}}

    Many men ruin their chances with women because they fail to fulfill promises. This attitude is so wrong and it will only take you far away from the woman you desire. Learn to stick to your words.

    {{3. BE FINANCIALLY COMFORTABLE}}

    I had to add this because most men think a woman needing a man who is comfortable financially is a gold digger. She isn’t asking you to be rich but you should be able to handle your own business financially. No woman needs a man who runs to his mama every time for financial assistance. Work hard and pay your bills, that’s the least she expects.

    {{4. BE RESPECTFUL}}

    When I say be respectful, I don’t just mean you respecting her alone. Women love men who are kind and respectful to people in general so you need to drop that rude attitude fast and start respecting people.

    {{5. REMEMBER DAYS THAT ARE SPECIAL TO HER}}

    Remembering days that are special to her will score you points. Just because you are not dating her doesn’t mean you shouldn’t say hello and get her a gift on her birthday.

  • Money really does matter in relationships

    {Our romantic choices are not just based on feelings and emotions, but how rich we feel compared to others, a new study published in Frontiers in Psychology has found.}

    “We wanted a better understanding of the psychological importance of money in the development of romantic relationships because very little is known about this subject. That way people would have a better perspective of the relationships they are in,” explained Professor Darius Chan from the Department of Psychology, at the University of Hong Kong.

    Two experiments were performed on groups of Chinese college students already involved in heterosexual long term relationships. The couples were made to think they were either wealthy or poor to examine their mating behavior.

    In the first study they found the wealthy men were less satisfied with their current partners’ physical attractiveness and were more interested in short-term relationships than those who were made to feel that they had less money. However, women who felt wealthy did not make higher demands regarding the men’s physical appearance.

    All of the wealthy participants in the second study found it easier to interact with an attractive member of the opposite sex than those belonging to a financially disadvantaged class. Interestingly and as expected, more men than women from both wealthy and poor conditions selected a closer seat to the more attractive people.

    “We remarked that wealthy men attach more importance to a mate’s physical attractiveness setting higher standards and preferring to engage in short-term mating than those who have less money. However, for committed women, money may lead to less variation in their mating strategies because losing a long-term relationship generally has a higher reproductive cost,” explained Chan.

    From an evolutionary perspective, conditional mating strategies helped our ancestors maximize their reproductive success.

    However, by looking at how people reacted when they thought themselves to be wealthy or poor supports the evolutionary psychology hypothesis that individuals adopt conditional mating strategies in response to environmental conditions such as money possession.

    Even though the study was applied to a specific culture, these psychological mechanisms still play important roles in human mating. “Whereas it remains as an empirical question to be answered, we expect that our findings are likely to be found in other cultures as well, because the basic mechanisms of mate selection have been found to be rather similar across culture,” Chan said.

    From an evolutionary perspective, conditional mating strategies helped our ancestors maximize their reproductive success.
  • Do you want to know if your relationship will last? Find out how

    {Won’t it be nice if you could predict if your relationship will last or not? I bet many will want this as it would help save them so much stress later.}

    A new app claims to be able to tell if your relationship will last by making a science-based decision.

    StayGo uses user inputted information and algorithms to give a score and verdict on a couple’s bond, reports The Independent.

    The app was developed by a team of university psychologists and relationship experts.

    The app is able to predict how long your relationship will last by asking you a series of questions which are sometimes very personal.

    Friends of the couple can give their opinions about the couple anonymously. Personality traits, such as how well a partner handles stress is also asked.

    After the test, the user’s relationship is given a score.

    Would you want to try it?
