  • Mugabe Criticises Mandela for Being too Soft on Whites

    {{Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe criticises Nelson Mandela for being too soft on whites, in a documentary giving a rare and intimate look into the family life of one of Africa’s longest serving and most vilified leaders.}}

    In a cosy lunch setting with his wife and children, the 89-year old speaks on a wide range of issues from his controversial hold on power, to his relationships with former British premiers Tony Blair and Margaret Thatcher.

    The two-and-a-half hour interview, described in detail by British and South African media ahead of its airing, shows the usually bellicose and sharp-tongued Mugabe as a loving family man.

    Dali Tambo, the son of South African anti-apartheid hero Oliver Tambo, produced the documentary, which will be broadcast on South African public television next Sunday.

    In the programme, Tambo dines with Mugabe’s family at his wife Grace’s dairy farm.

    The interview comes just months before crucial general elections in the country which in recent decades has gone from being the breadbasket of southern Africa to its biggest problem child.

    One of Africa’s most popular liberation leaders, Mugabe has clashed with the West over controversial policies which saw white-owned farms violently seized over a decade ago.

    In neighbouring South Africa, where white land ownership is still a flashpoint, Mugabe says former president Nelson Mandela was not hard enough.

    He said former colonial masters Britain — with whom he has had a fraught relationship over the land grabs — “will praise you only if you are doing things that please them”.

    “Mandela has gone a bit too far in doing good to the non-black communities, really in some cases at the expense of (blacks),” Mugabe said of his former South African counterpart.

    “That’s being too saintly, too good, too much of a saint,” he is quoted from the documentary.

    {{Affair with Grace}}

    Despite Mugabe’s disagreements with former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, who died in April, he says he preferred the Iron Lady to her later successor Tony Blair.

    “Mrs Thatcher, you could trust her. But of course what happened later was a different story with the Labour Party and Blair, who you could never trust,” said Mugabe.

    “Who can ever believe what Mr Blair says? Here we call him Bliar.”

    But despite having governed for 32 years, Africa’s oldest ruler also insists on staying in power.

    According to The Guardian in Britain, the topic of the upcoming vote unleashes Mugabe’s fiery rhetoric as he bangs his fist on an armrest and insists: “There is a fight to fight.”

    “My people still need me,” he told Tambo.

    “And when people still need you to lead them, it’s not time, sir, it doesn’t matter how old you are, to say goodbye.”

    Mugabe is currently sharing power with his rival Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai after violent disputed polls in 2008. No date has yet been set for this year’s elections although Mugabe is pressing for them to go ahead as soon as possible.

    According to The Guardian, Mugabe pours out his heart during the meal on his love for his wife and their “oneness”.

    In unusual candour Mugabe also explains his affair with Grace while still married to his sickly first wife Sally — he wanted to give his mother grandchildren.

    “As Sally was still going through her last few days, although it might have appeared to some as cruel, I said to myself ‘well, it’s not just myself needing children, my mother has all the time said, ah, am I going to die without seeing grandchildren’.”

    He married Grace, his secretary over 40 years his junior, after Sally Mugabe died in 1992.

    The couple have three children.

  • Zoe Saldana Confesses to Being Bisexual

    {{The Avatar and Star Trek actress, who covers June’s issue of Allure magazine, may have casually come out-of-the-closet after revealing a little more about her sexual preference through this controversial quote: “[I might] end up with a woman raising my children…that’s how androgynous I am.”}}

    The 34-year-old actress, who has also starred in Pirates of the Caribbean and Columbiana, has been linked to a string of actors, the most recent being Bradley Cooper. To that she candidly says, “Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.”

    Zoe isn’t the first, and most likely not the last Hollywood celebrity to admit they swing both ways. Former X-Files actress Gillian Anderson, Marilyn Manson’s former fiance Evan Rachel Wood, True Blood actress and Oscar winner Anna Pacquin, Drew Barrymore, Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong, and even Angelina Jolie; have all admitted to having a dual sexual lifestyle.

  • U.S. Envoy Hosts Celebration of International Day Against Homophobia &Transphobia

    {{The United States Ambassador to Rwanda, Donald W. Koran, hosted Friday a reception in celebration of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO).}}

    Members of Rwandan lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual (LGBT) groups Horizon Community Association (HOCA), My Right, and Other Sheep Rwanda joined with representatives of the Rwandan government and civil society, as well as international and bilateral missions in Kigali, for the first U.S. Embassy-sponsored IDAHO event in Rwanda.

    Rwanda’s Minister of Health Dr. Agnes Binagwaho, Minister of Justice Tharcisse Karugarama, and Minister of State for Public Health Dr. Anita Asiimwe attended the event.

    “Although sexual orientation and gender identity are sensitive issues for many people, we are here tonight to support the fundamental idea that no one should face targeting or discrimination because of sexual orientation or gender identity,” Ambassador Koran said.

    He continued, “I’m sure we all recognize that everyone deserves to be treated with respect and dignity, no matter their race, religion, gender, nationality, or, as we emphasize tonight, sexual orientation.”

    A representative from HOCA also spoke, on behalf of the wider Rwandan LGBT community. “We are happy and proud that there is no law against homosexuality in Rwanda. We thank everyone who took a part in this event.”

    The United States and Rwanda both signed a 2011 statement at the UN Human Rights Council calling for an end to acts of violence and human rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

    The U.S. government looks forward to continued support from the government of Rwanda in the fight against homophobia and transphobia.

    The International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia began in 2004 as a tool to draw attention to the existence of homophobia.

    It is celebrated every year on May 17th, to commemorate the day in 1990 that the World Health Organization declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder.

    {{Ambassador Koran’s remarks}}

    {Good evening. It is my pleasure to welcome you here on this important day, the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, known by its acronym, IDAHO.}

    {Today is a day when people the world over raise awareness of the existence of homophobia, and discuss ways we as a world community can seek to end its practice. Although sexual orientation and gender identity are sensitive issues for many people, we are here tonight to support the fundamental idea that no one should face targeting or discrimination because of sexual orientation or gender identity.

    As former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on International Human Rights Day in Geneva in December 2011, “Gay rights are human rights.” I’m sure we all recognize that everyone deserves to be treated with respect and dignity, no matter their race, religion, gender, nationality, or, as we emphasize tonight, sexual orientation. }

    {In this spirit, I am excited to host this, our first ever U.S. Embassy-sponsored IDAHO event in Rwanda. I am especially thrilled to welcome tonight so many representatives of Rwanda’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual – LGBT in the shorthand – community.

    Some of you here tonight are on the front lines of this issue. Groups like Horizon Community Association, My Right, and Other Sheep Rwanda, meet, organize, and strategize on how to improve the treatment of the LGBT community in Rwanda.

    These groups have developed ways to better advocate on behalf of the LGBT community and also how to support one another in the face of homophobia and stigmatization. They represent the mothers, fathers, sons and daughters in all of our communities who deserve our support, not just today, but every day.}

    {The United States stands against homophobia. More importantly, there is growing consensus across the globe that protecting the rights of LGBT persons warrants international attention. In 2011, the member states of the United Nations Human Rights Council expressed “grave concern” at violence and discrimination aimed at the LGBT community.

    Rwanda supported a similar statement at the Council, calling for an end to acts of violence and related human rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity. We welcome this support from the government of Rwanda and encourage continued support for the LGBT community in Rwanda and the rights of LGBT individuals in UN bodies.}

    {Despite these important gains, much remains to be done to ensure that all countries and all people recognize our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual brothers and sisters as just that: our brothers and sisters.

    They are part of our community and deserve the same rights, respect, and freedoms as everyone else. We hope that everyone here tonight will continue to support the way forward, one that guarantees dignity and equality for all.}

    {You will hear next from a representative of Rwanda’s LGBT community, and I encourage you to listen to her stories with open minds and open hearts.

    Thank you.}

  • Dubai fines British widower after bride’s death

    {{A Dubai court has fined a grieving British widower who allegedly arrived drunk to sign police paperwork to release the body of his wife.}}

    She had died in a balcony fall on their honeymoon.

    Police claim Sean Nicholas Emmett, a former motorcycle racer, arrived intoxicated at a police station in late February to claim the body of his 27-year-old wife, Abbie.

    She died the previous week in an apparently accidental fall from a Dubai high-rise hotel during their honeymoon. Emmett left Dubai last month.

    The fine of nearly $500 for drinking alcohol without a license was imposed on Tuesday in absentia.

    Alcohol is widely available in Dubai resorts and hotels, but a local permit is required for drinking in homes and other places — although the rule is often ignored.

  • Fr. Kalinijabo Finally Married

    {{Although his resignation from the Roman Catholic Church has not been denied nor granted by Vatican, Rwanda’s catholic Priest, Fr. Lambert Kalinijabo has legally married his wife Aimée Ntakirutimana.}}

    On Friday April 26, the couple entered a legally binding civil marriage at Byimana Sector in Ruhango district.

    This morning, Ntakirutimana introduced her husband to her parents at a function that attracted hundreds of cheering friends and relatives.

    IGIHE managed to access the venue where the introduction ceremony was being conducted at Kagugu, Gisozi sector in Gasabo district.

    The church wedding ceremony has been held at the anglican church in Remera, Giporoso I.

    Fr. kalinijabo wrote and submitted a resignation letter to the Catholic Church authorities.

    However, subject to rules and regulations of the Church, Kalinijabo’s resignation can only be granted or denied by the Pope Francis at Vatican.

    The Pope has not yet responded to Fr. Kalinijabo’s resignation. Which therefore requires that he waits until there is a responce from the Vatican.

    Such decision can not be taken at local (Rwanda-provincial level) but Fr. Kalinijabo who should have waited for a responce from Vatican, decided to go ahead and marry his fiancee Ntakirutimana.

    According to the Roman Catholic Church rules, Fr. kalinijabo’s decision to marry contravenes the Church rules that govern the priests meant to remain celibate forlife.

    Fr. kalinijabo’s contravention would attract Excommunication from the Roman Catholic Church.

  • Dutch to Get First King in 120 years

    {{The Dutch will have their first king in more than 120 years when Willem-Alexander succeeds his mother Queen Beatrix this month, bringing a more hands-off style to the throne at a time when the royal family’s political powers are already in decline.}}

    April 30, or Queen’s Day, is a popular celebration of the House of Orange when the Dutch dress up in the royal colour and party on the streets from dawn until late at night.

    This year, it will mark the abdication after 33 years of Queen Beatrix, 75, and the investiture of her eldest son Willem-Alexander, who turns 46 on April 27 and takes office as the first modern Dutch monarch without a formal political role.

    Unlike many of their European peers, Dutch royals have combined their influence and wealth with real political power, while appearing to lead an almost middle-class lifestyle.

    But last year, for the first time, Queen Beatrix did not appoint the mediator who conducts exploratory talks to lay the ground for the coalitions so typical of Dutch politics, after parliament voted to take that power away.

    The new king will still be influential, meeting the prime minister regularly, but in future parties will form coalitions on their own, meaning the king’s personal preferences will make far less of a mark.

    Hague insiders say that Beatrix once excluded a politician whose views she disliked from the process, something Willem-Alexander does not expect to be able to do.

    “You can have a meaningful kingship without a formal role in the formation” of governments, Willem-Alexander said in a television interview he gave jointly with his wife Maxima, a former Argentine investment banker. “Time has moved on.”

  • Smacking Children Does no Harm, Study Claims

    {{Being a strict mother can be good for children as long as the discipline is tempered with a little love and affection, the researchers claim.}}

    But parenting groups and charities have reacted angrily to the findings, maintaining that a child can suffer long term damage from physical discipline.

    The study of teenagers, published in the journal Parenting: Science and Practice, found the painful effects of harsh discipline – such as verbal threats or spanking – are offset by the child’s feeling of being loved.

    The researchers said being punished is unlikely to result in antisocial behaviour further down the line, as long as the child believes their punishment is coming from “a good place”.

    Smacking is controversial and has been found to carry a greater risk of manifesting aggression, delinquency and hyperactivity – but authors claims this can be moderated.

    In Britain parents are not explicitly banned from smacking their children, but under the current law it is illegal to inflict injuries causing more than a temporary reddening of the skin.

    The research will fuel the debate and the parental concern over the best way of bringing up children.

    Jeremy Todd, chief executive of charity Family Lives said: “We would never endorse smacking as we feel that there are much better ways to communicate with a child.

    “Parents who contact us say that smacking comes as a reaction, it is not a controlled moment. They often speak of their regrets; it is not something they feel good about. We would not support the research.”

    The team from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York studied a group of Mexican-American adolescents and found having a loving mother – or the “perception of maternal warmth” – protected against antisocial behaviour.

    The perception resulted in a positive relationship between harsh discipline and the way they way that the child dealt with problems in later life.

    Dr Miguelina German, lead author, explained “attachment theory” holds that warm, responsive parenting is the critical factor in producing happy, secure children.

    The underlying belief that their parents love them protects against feelings of rejection, even when being harshly disciplined, she said, and the discipline it does not automatically result in antisocial behaviour.

    “The relationship between the two is conditional and subject to other factors,” she said, noting that restrictive disciples are the cultural norm in Latino culture.

    “There are always other influences at play that can lessen their potential harm on the young child.”

    However, a spokesperson for the NSPCC who have campaigned for the practice to be illegal, said: “Smacking is not an effective form of punishment and undermines the trusting relationship between a child and their carer.

    “And it just teaches children to be violent. Young people tell us smacking leaves them feeling upset but often doesn’t deter them from doing what they were smacked for. We want to help parents use other more constructive methods to teach their children the difference between right and wrong.”

    Previous research has found children are more likely to grow into well adjusted adults if their parents are firm disciplinarians.

    Traditional “authoritative” parenting, combining high expectations of behaviour with warmth and sensitivity, leads to more “competent” children, according to the 2009 study by researchers from London’s Institute of Education.

    Justine Roberts, Mumsnet Founder, said: “Obviously smacking ‘from a good place’ is preferable to smacking ‘from a bad place’ but broadly Mumsnet users believe it’s better not to use violence not least because it feels hypocritical to tell children one thing about hitting others, yet practice another.”

  • Catholic Priest Kalinijabo to Marry in April

    {{A former catholic Priest Fr. Lambert Kalinijabo has announced April as date for his marriage which has caused mixed feelings among the conservative members of the Roman catholic faith.}}

    Rwanda has a larger Catholic population who find the decision by Fr. Kalinijabo to seek marriage as unusual.

    Fr. Kalinijabo is reported to have withdrawn from active duty in the Catholic church and is thus embarking on a new life without adhering to conservative principles of the Roman catholic church that require such persons to remain celibate.

    Monsignor Philipo Rukamba of Butare Diocese confirmed the news about Fr. Kalinijabo’s marriage preparations saying, “its true he is going to marry”.

    Msgr. Rukamba also explained that although Fr. Kalinijabo requested to retire from fatherhood, it takes alot of time to have such permision granted.

    “the resignation letter has to be sent to Vatican for the Pope to consider. But Fr. kalinijabo has not waited for the Popes Decision on his resignation request”.

    According to the Roman Catholic rules, Fr. kalinijabo’s decision to marry contravenes the Church rules that govern the priests meant to remain celibate forlife.

    Fr. kalinijabo’s contravention would attract Excommunication from the Roman Catholic Church.

    Kalinijabo has reportedly switched to the Anglican Faith (Protestant). He was previously Headteacher at Koleji Kristu Umwami in Nyanza district.

  • Kim Kardashian Finally Granted Divorce

    {{At long last, Kim Kardashian has been granted the divorce she’s wanted from Kris Humphries.}}

    The pregnant “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star was in court Friday morning with attorney Laura Wasser and was granted a dissolution of marriage due to “irreconcilable differences.”

    The court must sign off on the judgment by June 19. Humphries was not in court again today.

    Team Humphries consented after the judge told the NBA player would never prove fraud and recommended that he just needed to “settle and move on.”

    “As a result of this agreement, we will not have a trial in this case,” Judge Hank M. Goldberg said. “I want to congratulate the attorneys on both sides. This is a sensible way to resolve this case.”

    The reason the case carried on for well over a year is that Humphries wanted an annulment rather than a divorce, on the grounds that Kardashian committed fraud. He reportedly was seeking $7 million from his now ex-wife.

    Humphries will receive no money and each party will pay their own attorney’s fees.
