  • Man Dies Hours After Blocking ex-Wife’s Burial

    Man Dies Hours After Blocking ex-Wife’s Burial

    In Kenya a strange but true story has left a family totally confused.

    {{Linnet Mungai who finds herself unable to lay both her mother and father to rest because of a land tussle acknowledges that the position her family finds itself in, is rather peculiar.}}

    “I can’t believe it myself,” she told a local private radio.

    In the span of two weeks Linnet lost both her parents amid a tussle over land.

    “It started when my father Bernard Mungai Kirumba demolished my mother’s house insisting that since they split up 28 years ago, she should get off his property. He said he wanted to move back home with the wife he left us for as he was sickly,” she explained.

    Home, being a one and an eighth acre property in Uthiru on which Wambui and her two children, Linnet and Kirumba Junior, lived.

    “A week later, my mom who suffered from High Blood Pressure died from the stress at 55 years of age,” she recalled.

    But even dead, Linnet said, her father didn’t want her mother on his land, “On the day of the burial, last Thursday, with her grave ready and people gathered, we received a notice of injunction from our father who insisted that she be buried elsewhere.”

    And in what she views as karma, her father passed away the same day, “The following morning we got a report that the very same evening he died of a heart attack at 60.”

    But even in death, Mungai’s nephew Muchemi Kirumba insists that his late uncle’s wishes must be respected and that Wambui should not be laid to rest on his property.

    “Uncle Mungai wanted Wambui to come out of his premises. He got an eviction order and it was served to her and the children sometime in December. But she didn’t leave forcing uncle Mungai to evict her last Friday but one.

    That is when he came with the police and the court order and they effected the eviction to the point where he demolished her house signifying the complete severance of their ties,” he narrated.

    And so the Kirumba family remains divided on the way forward with Linnet and Kirumba Junior arguing that as next of kin, their father’s land now belongs to them and they should now be free to lay their mother to rest on it.

    Muchemi however counters that his uncle’s wishes were clear, “and like a will,” should be carried out to the letter.

    “When the question of where their mother should be buried arose, the father was still alive so the view of the children does not come into play. The children overriding the decision of their father would be taking advantage of the dead,” he argued.

    “And Kirumba is not the only son. There’s the first born son Kirumba and another daughter from when uncle subsequently married,” Muchemi continued to say.

    And the stalemate persists with Linnet and her brother arguing that their father should not be laid to rest until the contention surrounding their mother’s burial is resolved.

    Both sides also maintain that they will not shy away from the courts to ensure that justice, as they perceive it, is done.

    But as for the injunction Mungai had obtained against the burial of Wambui on his land, Nyamodi explained: “Unless his survivors were to then substitute him with another living party to the suit or his estate as the plaintiff in that suit, that suit then abates and if a suit abates it abates upon the death of the plaintiff and that would then be the end of the suit.”

    The courtroom daggers having been re-drawn however, the court’s finding on the dispute should make for interesting reading as debate rages over the rights of women in and out of marriage.

    “That would be an interesting question to be determined by court because there is a decision of the High Court in Busia that women are now entitled to matrimonial property.

    But I’m sure the more it is tested judicially the more it will be refined and we hope that the courts will then ensure that women don’t enter into marriages simply to walk away with property,” Nyamodi capped off.

  • Will Smith On ‘What every Woman Needs to Know’!

    Will Smith On ‘What every Woman Needs to Know’!

    {{With over 15 years of marriage under his belt, actor Will Smith dished out some marriage and relationship advice. }}

    In a recent interview, the 41 year-old actor dropped some valuable knowledge and lessons about love, marriage, and what it takes to keep your man happy:

    {{#If You Marry Your Best Friend, You’re Good}}

    Every man wants to marry his homie, Will says. A lot of women will impress them, but it’s the one they can always laugh with and be themselves with that will ultimately impress them the most.

    If you can be yourselves around each other, 100 percent of the time, and they can make you life like no one else can, you’ll never have a dull moment together.

    {{#Remind Him of What He Has}}

    When you start to feel that you’re nagging your husband to the point of no return and nothing you’re saying is getting through, Will suggests you try a new approach.

    Hold him close, look him right in the eyes, and tell him that you love him, you’re right there, and you always will be, BUT you need him to pick his socks up – right now.

    As Will puts it, it’s important to remind him that your request is coming from a good place, and what you want is a small thing in the grand scheme of things.

    {{#All Men Need A Little Space}}

    “If you don’t give your husband thirty minutes to himself when he first gets home he’ll stop coming home,” Will says, straight up. He says that a wife can say her piece “anytime after that.”

    Everyone’s home needs to feel like a happy place, and it won’t if you’re “greeted with negativity” every time you enter the door.

    {{#Focus on Balance and Excitement Always}}

    According to Will and Jada’s way of thinking about marriage, maintaining a happy union isn’t just about making time for one another, it’s about making the time count too. Excitement and mystery are everything, he said.

    Surprise them, let them know you love them, laugh together – whatever it takes to put a smile on their face.

    Instagram Lists 10 Happiest African Countries

    {{Jetpac is an app that analyzes Instagram photos to create city guides by rating images under topics such as “bars women love” – giving you a real feel of places where people have been through their images.}}

    The app is now giving “smile scores” based on the incidence and strength of smiling in an Instagram photo.

    Of course “smile scores” are hardly scientific and are based on individual perceptions. Also, whether someone smiles or not depends on cultural differences and individual personality traits.

    With that being said and a grain of salt, Kenya ranked 8th happiest country in Africa on Instagram by Jetpac with a score of 18.8, whilst South Africa took the title of happiest country in Africa with 31.5 points in the smiling stakes.

  • Kenya Legalises Polygamy

    Kenya Legalises Polygamy

    {{Kenya’s parliament has passed a bill allowing men to marry as many women as they want, prompting a furious backlash from female lawmakers who stormed out, reports said Friday.}}

    The bill, which amended existing marriage legislation, was passed late on Thursday to formalise customary law about marrying more than one person.

    The proposed bill had initially given a wife the right to veto the husband’s choice, but male members of parliament overcame party divisions to push through a text that dropped this clause.

    “When you marry an African woman, she must know the second one is on the way, and a third wife… this is Africa,” MP Junet Mohammed told the house, according to Nairobi’s Capital FM.

    As in many parts of Africa, polygamy is common among traditional communities in Kenya, as well as among the country’s Muslim community, which accounts for up to a fifth of the population.

    “Any time a man comes home with a woman, that would be assumed to be a second or third wife,” said Samuel Chepkong’a, chairperson of the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, the Daily Nation newspaper reported.

    “Under customary law, women or wives you have married do not need to be told when you’re coming home with a second or third wife. Any lady you bring home is your wife,” he added.

    Men fear ‘women’s tongues’

    Female MPs stormed out of the late-night session in fury after a heated debate.

    “We know that men are afraid of women’s tongues more than anything else,” female legislator Soipan Tuya told fellow MPs, according to Capital FM.

    “But at the end of the day, if you are the man of the house, and you choose to bring on another party – and they may be two or three – I think it behoves you to be man enough to agree that your wife and family should know,” she added.

    A clause in which a partner who had promised marriage but then backed out of the wedding could face financial damages was also dropped, as male MPs argued it could have been used to extort cash.

    They also argued that marriage should be based on love, and not have a financial cost placed upon it.

    Parliamentary majority leader Aden Duale, a Muslim, said that men marrying more than one woman was part of the Islamic faith, but also highlighted Biblical stories to justify Christians not asking their wife before taking another.

    “I want my Christian brothers to read the Old Testament – King David and King Solomon never consulted anybody to marry a second wife,” Duale told the house.

    Women are not allowed to marry more than one man in Kenya.

    The bill must now pass before the president to be signed before becoming law.

    Nollywood’s Iyke Proposes to Nadia Buari; She Says Yes!

    {{After months, probably years, of speculations, Nollywood bad boy actor, Jim Iyke ({pictured above}) has proposed to bubbly Ghanaian actress Nadia Buari.}}

    The actor proposed to the actress on Thursday’s edition of his hit reality show, Jim Iyke Unscripted.

    Jim proposed with a six-carat-diamond ring while having dinner with Nadia, who didn’t hesitate to say “Yes”.

    According to the bad boy actor, the ring was ‘designed’ by him in specially selected countries including Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Gabon, with London providing the final finish.

    The proposal puts an end to the speculations and earlier denials by the two that they were planning to get married.

    Jim tweeted then that, “I’ll resolve this issue by stating as clearly as possible that this marriage rumours is unfounded and far-fetched. My prerogative is known to me only.”

    Shortly after refuting the marriage reports, Jim Iyke flew Nadia Buari on an European city tour on her 31st birthday which fell on November 21, 2013.

    Jim tweeted a photo of Nadia and himself in a flight for the tour that will take them in Madrid (Spain), Frankfurt (Germany), Zurich (Switzerland) and then Barcelona (Spain).

    The love birds are yet to officially announce their wedding plans.

  • Life made in France: No Condoms, no Laptop

    Life made in France: No Condoms, no Laptop

    {{In a globalised France, where hamburgers are a culinary craze, people queue to see the latest US blockbuster and Levis are the brand of choice for jeans, is it possible to live a 100% French life?}}

    That was the challenge tackled by Benjamin Carle, a 25-year-old journalist who decided to spend nine months eating, wearing, buying and using only French-made products.

    A documentary chronicling his experience aired on French cable channel Canal+ on March 19, and has kick-started a conversation about French identity.

    On a budget of only 1,800 euros (2,480 US dollars) per month, Carle travelled around the country, immersing himself in a culture with which he says it’s easy to lose touch – especially as a young person in France today.

    By turning his camera on his experiment, Carle explores a range of social, cultural, political and economic questions: What are the strengths and weaknesses of French industries?

    Can the French economy be saved if everyone makes an effort to buy French products? Can France progress scientifically, technologically and culturally without relying on foreign influences and collaboration?

    Some of the conclusions he drew from his nine-month stint as an “economic patriot” were bleak.

    “I feel like in France, we don’t really reinvent ourselves,” Carle told weekly magazine L’Express in an interview published on Wednesday.

    “The only products we still manufacture here are those that most characterise us as French…in terms of clothing, for example, it’s sweaters and Breton sailor jerseys [navy and white striped knitted shirts]. The rest, T-shirts and pants, are all designed abroad.”

    That said, Carle told L’Express, typical French clothing is hardly out of fashion. “Wearing only French-manufactured clothing could actually become a hipster thing,” he said.

    {{No condoms, but lots of ‘Happy Meals’}}

    Aside from his favourite pair of jeans, other things Carle had to forgo were his cell phone, laptop and condoms, none of which, apparently, are manufactured in France. “But we do make lubricant!” he added in an interview with culture site La Trempe.

    Inspired by a call from Socialist politician Arnaud Montebourg, France’s minister for economic renewal, Carle quickly realized that helping renew the economy also meant renewing his ties to his own culture.

    In interviews with the press, the young man described how buying only regional French food products (“produits du terroir”, as the French call them) forced him to cook, and in turn inspired him to take his time savouring the meal – a French tradition.

    He has also said that he was surprised by the places he was able to find meals that were made exclusively from French products. In Paris’s ethnically diverse Belleville neighbourhood, Carle noted that two spots were reliable in offering 100% French meals: a “banh mi” shop, which prepared the famous Vietnamese sandwiches using baguettes from the bakery next door, French-raised beef, French-grown carrots, and a homemade mayonnaise made from French eggs; and McDonald’s, where the meat and potatoes are all from France.

    “You have a better chance of eating local food in a McDonald’s than in a bad brasserie that serves reheated frozen meals,” he told L’Express.

    Perhaps the most extreme part of Carle’s project was his mission to rid his daily speech of any “Anglicisms”. For example, he replaced the English word “cool”, now commonly used in French, with “chouette”, a quaint colloquialism that roughly translates as “neat”.

    But most daunting of all, he has said, was altering his listening, reading and viewing habits. Deprived of David Bowie, Carle turned to French singers like Jacno and Johnny Hallyday.

    He read a lot of Montaigne. And he watched lots of films directed by Jean-Luc Godard or starring French comic Pierre Richard.

    Carle’s main regret, he told L’Express, was not being able to go see Hollywood thriller “Gravity” in 3D.

  • David Beckham Named World’s Best Underwear Model

    David Beckham Named World’s Best Underwear Model

    {{David Beckham has been named the world’s best underwear model.}}

    The retired soccer star, 38, has been crowned the champion by designer Tommy Hilfiger as he believes the hunky star can pull off the sexy look in minimal clothing.

    He told TMZ.com: “I have seen all kinds of underwear models, but we all wish we looked like David Beckham at the end of the day. He is like the underwear model of the century.” READ: Beckham voted most stylish man.

    David first stripped down to his underwear in 2007 when he appeared alongside his fashion designer wife Victoria in the Emporio Armani campaign.

    In 2012, the star bared his toned physique once again when he launched his own bodywear line for the high-street retailer H&M and he has continued to provide the chain with collections ever since.

    However, David previously admitted his sons Brooklyn, 15, Romeo, 11, and Cruz, nine, get embarrassed when they see their father posing in his undergarments.

    He said last year: “They say ‘Oh my God daddy – not again’. They were like, ‘That’s really good, but everyone’s gonna see you in your pants.’ ”

    Colombian President Wets Pants During Election Speech

    {{Colombia’s premier was unable to keep his bladder in check to embarrasing effect.}}

    Giving an impassioned speech to supporters at the launch of his re-election campaign in the coastal city of Barranquilla, President Juan Manuel Santos came up a cropper as he began wetting himself onstage.

    Perhaps to his credit, the 62-year-old did not let something as trivial as a bodily function interrupt him mid-flow and the wet patch on his beige trousers can be seen to be getting bigger and bigger as the speech runs on.

    His aides either did not notice or were too scared to step in to tell the president about his accident.

    President Santos, a graduate of both the London School of Economic and Harvard, was elected president in 2010.

    He will be hoping the incident does not overshadow the policy agenda he will be pushing throughout his campaign for a second term.

    None of his aides standing behind him stepped in to tell the president or suggest he leave the stage.

  • Harrison Guitar Leads Beatles Memorabilia Auction

    Harrison Guitar Leads Beatles Memorabilia Auction

    {{An electric guitar played by George Harrison on British television prior to the Beatles’ “invasion” of the United States will go on the auction block along with a rare album cover signed by the Fab Four, Julien’s Auctions said on Monday.}}

    Harrison’s black-and-white 1962 Rickenbacker 425 electric guitar is expected to fetch between $400,000 and $600,000 at an auction on May 16-17 at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City.

    Harrison, who died in 2001 at age 58, played the guitar on 1963 appearances on British TV shows “Ready Steady Go!” and “Thank Your Lucky Stars” months before the group brought Beatlemania to the United States with a series of performances on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in February 1964, launching the British Invasion of rock bands.

    The guitarist bought the instrument in 1963 in Mount Vernon, Illinois, while on a trip to visit his sister, according to the Beverly Hills, California, auction house.

    The guitar, which Harrison had painted white and black to match John Lennon’s Rickenbacker guitar, was also used during the sessions when the band recorded “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “This Boy” in October 1963.

    Harrison later gave the guitar to friend and musician George Peckham, who played it in an appearance on UK TV show “Top of the Pops” with the band the Fourmost.

    Also up for sale is a copy of the album “Beatles ’65” signed by Lennon, Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. The album is expected to fetch between $200,000 and $300,000 because it was rare for all four members of the group to sign copies of albums after their popularity exploded in the United States in 1964.

    A used Hofner bass rented by McCartney in the mid-1960s is expected to sell for $30,000 to $50,000, while a signed cover by the group of the 1963 album “Please Please Me” is expected to bring in between $40,000 and $50,000.

    An original artwork by Lennon called “Shroud of Tourin” is estimated to sell for $20,000 to $30,000. The piece of un-stretched canvas, created circa 1966, shows a man who looks like Lennon with a Batman symbol on his chest and words scrawled across it.
