    Indian Politicians Befriend Polygamous Man

    {{Mr. Zionnghaka Chana has been courted by every politician in the run up to the next round of elections in India – because he has 39 wives and 127 children. }}

    Polygamist and sect leader Zionnghaka Chana has become the voter every politician in Mizoram state wants to know because of his influence over his 39 wives and 127 children and grandchildren.

    Mr Chana, who has a 100-room home in the Baktawng village, Aizawl, told reporters: ‘We were witnessing a rush of politicians seeking votes in the last few days.

    ‘During every election we are much in demand as the winning margins of politicians in this state are slim, so even 100-odd votes matter to them.’

    One of Mr Chana’s wives, Rinkmini, said: ‘When we go to vote, we always cast our ballots for the same candidate or party.

    ‘That means more than 160-odd votes are assured from one family.’

    Like most voters at this election, Mr Chana said he wanted clean government and development so that his family could prosper.

    ‘All we want is good governance and the wellbeing of the state instead of personal gains for our family from the politicians,’ he said.

    Mizoram is the only state voting on Friday, in the fourth of nine stages of voting in the world’s biggest election.

    The Election Commission rescheduled polling following a dispute over whether tribal groups displaced during recent ethnic strife were allowed to vote in their refugee camps.

    The state represents less than one percent of India’s 814 million-strong electorate. Voting across India ends on May 12 – with results due four days later.

    Mr Chana’s grandfather founded the sect in the 1930s. It has some 1,700 members including four generations of the Chana family, many of whom carve wooden furniture and make pottery items.

    The group live in an enormous 100-room, four-storey property – but some of the wives still have to sleep top-to-tail in communal dormitories.

    The family is organised with great discipline. The oldest wife Zathiangi, 69, regularly draws up schedules for her fellow partners to take turns performing household chores such as preparing meals, washing and cleaning.

    Preparing meals is always a mammoth task – with one evening meal seeing them consume 30 chickens, 132lb of potatoes and up to 220lb of rice.
    The property has its own school, a playground, carpentry workshops, piggery and poultry farms and a vegetable garden big enough to supply the whole family.

    Mr Chana is also head of the sect – which allows members to take as many wives as they wish.

    Its philosophy is based on Christian teachings, although leaders from the Presbyterian church, the main faith in the state, reject Chana’s embrace of polygamy.
    He keeps the youngest women near to his bedroom with the older members of the family sleeping further away – and there is a rotation system for who visits his bedroom.

    Rinkmini, one of Ziona’s wives, who is 35, said: ‘We stay around him as he is the most important person in the house. He is the most handsome person in the village.’

    {{The family cram on to a truck to make their way to church. One of Mr Chana’s wives, Rinkmini, said: ‘When we go to vote, we always cast our ballots for the same candidate or party’}}

    Africa’s Anti-Gay Movement Spreads to Ethiopia

    {{Two groups in Ethiopia say they will hold an anti-gay demonstration in the capital.

    Ethiopia appears set to become the latest African country to increase the public demonisation of gays, following new legislation in Uganda and Nigeria this year that increased penalties for homosexual acts. Ethiopia’s parliament is also considering similar anti-gay legislation.}}

    The two groups — the government-affiliated Addis Ababa Youth Forum and a religious association — said on Thursday they have permission to hold a demonstration on 26 April.

    Dereje Negash, the church group chairperson, said Ethiopia is witnessing an increase in homosexual acts and attacks on children. He said the attacks have reached “an alarming rate”.

    Ezana Solomon, a gay activist in Addis Ababa, said the groups are trying to invade personal freedoms under the guise of child protection.

    Married US Senator Caught on Camera Kissing Female Staffer

    {{Republican Vance McAllister is facing trouble after a local newspaper reported he can be seen kissing a female staffer in a surveillance video.}}

    On Monday, The Ouachita Citizen published a surveillance video allegedly showing McAllister and Melissa Anne Hixon Peacock, McAllister’s district scheduler, at the Republican’s congressional office in Monroe, Louisiana.

    The two people in the video can be seen embracing and kissing for almost half a minute.

    McAllister made headlines in January for inviting “Duck Dynasty” star Willie Robertson as his guest to President Barack Obama’s 2014 State of the Union address.

    He is fairly new to politics, having assumed office in November 2013 after an upset win in a runoff race against Republican Neil Riser to succeed former GOP Rep.

    Rodney Alexander. McAllister’s win came after he touted his conservative values and 16-year-marriage.

    France’s Far Right Mayors May Insist on Pork in Schools

    {{France’s newly elected far-right mayors will re-instate school cafeteria menus featuring pork in the cities they govern, the National Front party’s leader, Marine Le Pen, announced on Friday.}}

    Most French public schools offer an option with no pork for Muslim and Jewish students who follow their religions’ dietary restrictions.

    “We will not except any religious requirements when it comes to school cafeteria menus,” Le Pen declared on French radio network RTL, in response to a question about the measures the National Front would implement in the cities they won in last week’s municipal elections.

    “There is absolutely no reason for religion to enter into the public sphere; that’s the law.”

    France is a strictly secular country – with a Catholic majority and sizable Muslim and Jewish minorities – and has in recent years prohibited the wearing of religious garb (like the Muslim headscarf or Jewish kippah) in public buildings like schools and hospitals.

    In her radio interview on Friday, Le Pen said that France’s tradition of secularism was being threatened, and she accused mayors from both the Socialist Party and the right-wing UMP of catering to religious minorities in the hopes of getting their votes.

    France’s Communist Party was quick to condemn Le Pen’s statement. “Marine Le Pen is promoting backwards secularism,” the party said in a statement, denouncing “a thinly veiled anti-Muslim offensive.”

  • Brazil ‘Rescues’ Cruise Ship Workers

    Brazil ‘Rescues’ Cruise Ship Workers

    {{Brazilian police say they have rescued 11 crew members working in “slave-like conditions” on an Italian cruise ship.}}

    The operation was carried out the north-eastern city of Salvador, where the MSC Magnifica had docked for the day with more than 3,000 passengers.

    Brazilian officials say the 11 crew members were forced to work up to 16 hours a day. Some were alleged to have been victims of sexual harassment.

    Italian cruise operator MSC Crociere has adamantly rejected the allegations.

    “MSC Crociere is in full compliance with national and international labour regulations and is ready to co-operate with the authorities,” it said in a statement.

    The company said it had not received “any evidence or legal notification” from the Brazilian labour ministry.

    Brazilian Federal Police officers boarded the ship on Tuesday, before it departed for the city of Recife, on its way back to Europe. But the operation has only now been made public.

    ‘Basic human rights’
    It comes at the end of a month-long investigation, following a tip-off from crew members on the MSC Magnifica.

    The labour ministry identified 13 staff who had allegedly been submitted to slave-like conditions.

    Two of them refused to leave the vessel and decided to carry on working, while the other 11 were taken to a hotel in Salvador.

    Their nationalities have not been released.

    “The fact that they had signed a contract, even an international contract, does not mean that the basic human rights should not be respected,” Labour Ministry director Alexandre Lyra told Folha de Sao Paulo.

    Brazil has seen a boom in the cruise tourism industry over the past decade.

    The main European and American cruise operators take many of their ships to South America, operating at full capacity in the busy summer period, between December and March.

    MSC Crociere says its ships alone employ 4,181 crew members in Brazilian waters. More than 1,200 of them are Brazilian nationals.

  • We are Going Nowhere, Gays Now tell Mugabe

    We are Going Nowhere, Gays Now tell Mugabe

    {{Pressure is mounting on Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe’s administration to legalise same-sex marriages.}}

    Pro-gay lobby groups said Mugabe should recognise their rights and lift the country ban on homosexuality.

    The beleaguered groups spoke as local churches mounted a fresh campaign against homosexuals, with top bishops sensationally likening them to mentally sick people.

    Officials of Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ) claimed Mugabe and his administration was using propaganda and mooting more repressive legislation to silence them, but added they would not back down.

    Speaking in Harare yesterday, the lobby said anti-gay pronouncements by the President and church leaders had led to discrimination in employment, education and healthcare.

    Mugabe has also backed the controversial anti-gay law in Uganda. No matter what they do and say, we are going nowhere and will continue fighting for recognition from within, said Samuel Matsikure, the GALZ Programmes Manager.

    The Zimbabwean constitution, enacted in March last year, criminalizes gay sex and same-sex marriages. The practice is also officially outlawed in Uganda and Nigeria while many other African countries have a silent ban anchored in statutes.

    Bishop Emmanuel Makandiwa led local clergymen last Sunday in declaring gays are mentally sick, saying most Zimbabweans do not believe gays are out of their mind “because they (gays) have more wealth than you.

    Yesterday, Matsikure also hit back at Uganda, Nigeria and Kenya for continued discrimination of gays, saying African nations should join the league of countries that treat their nationals equally without prejudices drawn along sexual orientation.

  • Mistakes Women Make With Men

    Mistakes Women Make With Men

    {{There are some classic mistakes that women make with men. So classic that I honestly wish a book was made of them — a rule book — and women had to read it in high school. And then take a test on it. Like 50 tests. And they had to memorize every single word.}}

    But there is no Relationship 101 unless you count the ones in the School of Hard Knocks. You have to live it or have your friends live it — sometimes multiple times — for the lessons to kick in. And sometimes then they don’t even stick.

    But, boy, if every woman knew these classic mistakes, and to avoid them, before plunging into the dating world in their early 20s, what a different experience love could be for those ladies. Here are 6 classic mistakes women make with men.

    {{Classic Mistake #1: I can change him.}}

    Although people do hear that old adage, “People don’t change,” no one really takes it seriously until he or she is faced with a person who needs to change. It’s at that point you go into denial. “Oh, he just needs someone who understands him,” “If I do everything for him, he’ll feel like he wants to reciprocate,” etc. Chances are, that is never, ever going to happen.

    Not that people don’t change — they do. But YOU can’t make them. A good rule of thumb is this: If you knew that this man would be EXACTLY the same for the next 50 years, would you still want to marry/date him? If the answer is “hell no,” then abort mission if you aren’t married yet. And if you are already married, carefully consider what your next step is and whether it should be divorce.

    {{Classic Mistake #2: I’m the exception.}}

    I’ve seen far too many intelligent women get involved with a guy with a horrible romantic history who then goes on to cement the pattern with them. Why? Because they thought they would be the “exception.” I’ve heard: “We were such good friends, I thought he’d never pull that on me.”

    I’ve heard: “He cheated on his wife, but that was 10 years ago.” I’ve heard: “He broke off two engagements, but this time he says he’s really ready and has met the right person.” Not that you’re definitely NOT the exception — hey, maybe you are — but chances are, you’re not. And why would you want to risk it anyway?

    {{Classic Mistake #3: Not listening.}}

    I’ve come to believe a man tells you pretty much everything you need to know about him in the first few months, if not the first few dates. If he says, “I’d really love to get married, but I’ve found it so hard to find someone I’m compatible with,” women hear: I’d really love to get married.

    They don’t hear, “I find most women are incompatible with me, and I’m not even considering that this might be my fault.” I had one friend whose new man told her right off the bat that he gets tired of women after two months. However, when she confronted him on this, he backtracked and said he was just joking around. Guess what happened after two months? Listen. And take heed.

    {{Classic Mistake #4: Giving points for being “honest.”}}

    If a man is telling you all about his troubles, his rocky romantic history, his financial problems, or his drug addictions, women tend to think: “Oh, he’s being so honest with me, that must mean he doesn’t plan on doing any of this stuff with me.”

    Women find it impossible to believe a man would advertise his future bad behavior. But men often give you a warning for a good reason — they are testing you to see if you will stick around after hearing about their chronic unemployment, cheating history, or addictions. If you do, then they consider that you’ve had fair warning.

    {{Classic Mistake #5: He will leave his wife for me.}}

    This is such an old-timey classic mistake that it’s crazy to think there are women who still fall for it, but they do. As high as the divorce rate is, chances are a guy who gets involved with you while he’s with his wife is doing it because he wants two women — not one.

    If he dumps his wife, that would mean he’s only got one woman. You. Which is not what he wants. If he swears he’s leaving his wife soon, what harm can it do to walk away and tell him to call you once the divorce is final? If he likes you that much, it should only speed up the process, right?

    {{Classic Mistake #6: Marriage and/or children will change him/settle him down.}}

    This does happen with some guys, but it’s a huge mistake to assume it’s going to happen. In fact, women who are with abusers are never more at risk of being killed than when they get pregnant. And guys with a history of cheating are likely to do it even more once they get married. Guys who cheat are usually commitmentphobes who use other women to keep distance from you. So getting married will only intensify those commitmentphobic feelings and increase the desire to cheat.

  • Nine Month-Pregnant Woman Lifting Weights

    Nine Month-Pregnant Woman Lifting Weights

    {{Lea-Anne Ellison ({pictured above}), the Los Angeles fitness enthusiast who triggered outrage last September when she posted photos of herself on Facebook lifting heavy weights just two weeks before her due date, has once again hit back at her ‘haters’.}}

    The 35-year-old mother of three, who gave birth to her youngest son four months ago, is back in the gym and says she, and little Skyler, are doing ‘great’.

    ‘I started back at CrossFit three weeks after my son was born,’ she tells MailOnline. ‘I did not go very hard as my body was still healing but I was so happy to be back to my program.’

    No mommy tummy here! LA native Lea-Ann Ellison hits back at critics of her exercise regime and displays her post-baby body a mere four months after the birth to little Skyler, pictured

    The trim blonde proudly reveals her post-baby body in a new series of photos with son Skyler, and there’s not a hint of a mommy tummy to be seen.

    ‘I know, for me, that keeping strong and fit during pregnancy, and eating a diet full of fresh organic food has been key to my success in gaining my figure back,’ she remarks. ‘And no sugar! Sugar will keep a mommy tummy on a lady forever!’

    According to MuscleTech.com, CrossFit entails ‘an aggressive yet well-rounded pursuit of general, overall fitness in the ten recognized domains, as opposed to the bodybuilding ideology of pursuing perfect muscle symmetry, size and cuts.’

    While many supported her decision to maintain her strenuous fitness regime, others were horrified.

    ‘She is very selfish for endangering a life for her own personal gains and achievements. This is not a proud picture to post,’ one respondent posted, as others labeled the photos ‘sickening’ and ‘worrying’.

    Andrea Nitz, a personal trainer at CrossFit Brand X, in Ramona, California has published an article for the The Crossfit Journal, addressing the question of whether the regime is safe for expectant mothers.

    ‘As many studies have shown, it’s not bad for our babies. It is actually very good for the kid,’ Ms Nitz writes.

    She goes on to speak from personal experience, writing: ‘I have seen for myself that babies born to CrossFitting moms have a number of similar traits that make for a smoother transition to life outside the womb.’

    And she may be right, if Ms Ellison’s photos of her healthy-looking, bouncing baby boy are anything to go by.

    The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists however, warns against undertaking strenuous exercise during pregnancy, saying: ‘It has been reported that pregnant women whose occupations require repetitive, strenuous, physical work (e.g. lifting) have a tendency to deliver earlier and have small-for-gestational-age infant.’

    Most medical guidelines fall somewhere in between on their advice. The Mayo Clinic warns that although a woman’s ‘tolerance to strenuous exercise will decrease’ as the pregnancy progresses, it’s perfectly safe in most cases.

    ‘Regular exercise can help you stay in shape, better cope with the physical changes of pregnancy and build stamina for the challenges ahead’

    In fact, according to a study last year from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one in four women in the U.S. are obese when they become pregnant, and the ill effects of this can be far more potentially dangerous to an unborn child.

    Complications for an obese expectant mother may include high blood pressure, gestational diabetes and potential extra difficulties during labor and birth.

    ‘Regular exercise can help you stay in shape, better cope with the physical changes of pregnancy and build stamina for the challenges ahead,’ the Mayo Clinic states.

    For Ms Ellinson, it’s been a rewarding journey and she’s thrilled to have picked up many fans and new friends along the way.

    ‘I receive fan mail every day from women saying thank you for leading the way. It has been very wonderful to see such a positive result of such an unexpected popularity,’ she concludes.

  • Mozilla CEO Resigns Over Hormosexuality

    Mozilla CEO Resigns Over Hormosexuality

    {{The chief executive of Mozilla – the company best known for its Firefox browser – has stepped down.}}

    Brendan Eich was appointed just last month but came in for heavy criticism for his views on same-sex marriage.

    Mozilla’s executive chairwoman Mitchell Baker announced the decision in a blog post.

    “Mozilla prides itself on being held to a different standard and, this past week, we didn’t live up to it,” she wrote.

    “We know why people are hurt and angry, and they are right: it’s because we haven’t stayed true to ourselves.

    “We didn’t act like you’d expect Mozilla to act. We didn’t move fast enough to engage with people once the controversy started. We’re sorry. We must do better.”

    Mr Eich has also stepped down from the board of the Mozilla Foundation, the non-profit organisation which owns the for-profit Mozilla Corporation.

    {{Angry users}}

    Mr Eich, who co-founded Mozilla and was also the creator of the JavaScript scripting language, made a $1,000 (£600) donation in 2008 in support of Californian anti-gay marriage law Proposition 8.

    Although it was initially passed, it was later overturned by the US Supreme Court in 2013.

    When the announcement of Mr Eich’s appointment was made on 24 March, angry users voiced their opinions on social media.

    Several high-profile Mozilla employees also weighed in. Three board members resigned in the weekend following Mr Eich’s appointment – but Mozilla said the events were not linked.

    But the most damaging act of protest came via dating website OkCupid.

    Users who went to the site using Mozilla’s Firefox browser were greeted with a message that read: “Hello there, Mozilla Firefox user. Pardon this interruption of your OkCupid experience.

    “Mozilla’s new CEO, Brendan Eich, is an opponent of equal rights for gay couples. We would therefore prefer that our users not use Mozilla software to access OkCupid.”

    Mozilla initially defended Mr Eich’s appointment, but Ms Baker’s blog post announcing the chief executive’s departure made apologies for doing so.

    “We failed to listen, to engage, and to be guided by our community,” she wrote.

    She added that any potential replacement for Mr Eich was still being discussed, and that more details would be announced next week.
