  • A Little Shop of Possibilities

    A Little Shop of Possibilities

    {“Sweet Dreams,” a documentary about efforts by the Brooklyn-based Blue Marble Ice Cream company to help a group of Rwandan women open their own shop, could have come off as insensitive or twee. And in the first 10 minutes, I worried that it was, indeed, about how artisanal food could save Africa.}

    When viewers are facing the aftermath of genocide in Rwanda, in which hundreds of thousands of Tutsis were slaughtered in 1994, it’s easy to think that ice cream is a comparatively petty concern. But, thankfully, the sibling directors Lisa and Rob Fruchtman have made a nuanced and deftly edited film about a complex issue. It’s fascinating to see the natural resources in this “land of milk and honey” transformed into novelty and development through a soft-serve machine. And, as one man says, “If you are bringing development to the woman, you are bringing it to the whole family.” It is rare to see a movie present such weighty problems and offer nonsimplistic, practical solutions in story form.

    Ms. Fruchtman’s background as an editor (“Apocalypse Now” and “Heaven’s Gate”) may have helped guide the skillful narrative structure here. The initial focus on the struggles and successes of a small business may be familiar to Western audiences. But then the individual past horrors endured by these women are revealed in subtle and dramatic ways, until we realize the weight of trauma in this nation. “Can someone just see you and start guessing your story?” one subject wonders.

    Justin Bieber bailed on Brazil crowd after bottle gets thrown

    {The ‘Boyfriend’ singer cut short his gig in Sao Paulo on Saturday night (02.11.13) after a water bottle thrown from the crowd knocked his microphone out of his hand.
    }

    The 19-year-old pop superstar – who was completing the Brazil leg of his ‘Believe’ tour – walked off after the incident and abruptly ended the show without playing his biggest hit ‘Baby’.

    Many fans waited up to 30 minutes for him to return and most were left in tears when they realised the gig was over.

    Felipe Gladiador, who was reviewing the show for Brazil’s G7 website said: “The fans didn’t know what was going on and stayed in their seats half an hour, hoping that he would come back to finish the show.

    “The public called for him to sing ‘Baby’ and yet nothing.

    The lights came on, Bieber’s team started to take the equipment down and the fans realised it wasn’t going to happen.”

    Even Justin’s back-up dancers were surprised by his behaviour after the singer left the venue without a word to his band or to the crowd.

    Felipe added: “The scene was so shocking that even his dancers couldn’t believe what they had seen … In the end, there was no farewell, no thanks and no rendition of his most famous song.”

    Congo’s M23 rebels declare ceasefire

    {Democratic Republic of Congo’s M23 rebels have declared a ceasefire in their fight with the army, they said on Sunday, in a move they hope will advance peace talks with the government.}

    “We call on the facilitator of the Kampala peace talks to immediately put in place a mechanism to monitor the ceasefire,” the rebels said in statement.

    There was no immediate reaction from the army, which has pushed the rebels from all the towns they once controlled during a 20-month rebellion in North Kivu province.

    Rebel fighters this week abandoned Bunagana, their last stronghold in the eastern province, and have withdrawn into the hills and forests around Congo’s border with Uganda and Rwanda

    On Friday, Uganda, which has led regional attempts to end the most serious rebellion since Congo’s last war ended a decade ago, called for both sides to stop fighting. Heavy fighting has eased but the army said it shelled rebel positions on Saturday to encourage fighters to surrender.

    Congo’s government has dispatched senior negotiators to talks in Uganda but the army is keen to finish off the rebellion, the last in a series of uprisings led by Congolese Tutsis in the mineral-rich but unstable east.

    Mick Jagger denies claim ‘he hit on’ Katy Perry

    {Sir Mick Jagger has issued a statement denying Katy Perry’s claims that he made a pass at her when she was 18. }

    Perry made the comments during an interview on Australian radio this week, while promoting new album Prism.

    She said the incident took place when she sang backing vocals for Sir Mick’s 2004 song Old Habits Die Hard.

    But a statement from the 70-year-old Rolling Stones frontman said he “categorically denies that he has ever made a pass at Katy Perry”.

    It continued: “Perhaps she is confusing him with someone else.”

    Perry, 29, told her interviewer, “I actually went to dinner with him one time and he hit on me one time when I was like 18.

    “But that was a long time ago and since then he’s been very kind and I got to sing Beast Of Burden on his stage on their tour,” she added.

    She was one of several singers to make a guest appearance on the Rolling Stones’ tour earlier this year.

    When Perry was asked during the interview how she turned down an advance from a star such as Mick Jagger, she responded: “Well, you bring a friend and they do them. You sacrifice your friend.”

  • Britney Spears songs used to scare off pirates in Somalia

    Britney Spears songs used to scare off pirates in Somalia

    {Britney Spears is being used as a secret weapon… to scare off Somali pirates. Her hits are blasted out to deter kidnap attacks, merchant navy officer Rachel Owens revealed.}

    Spears’s chart-toppers Oops! I Did It Again and Baby One More Time have proved to be the most effective at keeping the bandits at bay.

    Second Officer Owens, who works on supertankers off the east coast of Africa, said: ‘Her songs were chosen by the security team because they thought the pirates would hate them most.

    ‘These guys can’t stand Western culture or music, making Britney’s hits perfect.’

    Ships in the region are in constant danger from gun-toting pirates boarding and kidnapping crews for multi-million-pound ransoms.

    In 2011, there were 176 attacks on ships by gangs of bandits off the Horn of Africa. They are such a threat the Royal Navy has 1,500 sailors on 14 warships operating round-the-clock patrols in the area.

    Ms Owens, who regularly guides huge tankers through the waters, said the ship’s speakers can be aimed solely at the pirates so as not to disturb the crew.

    ‘It’s so effective the ship’s security rarely needs to resort to firing guns,’ said the 34-year-old, from Gartmore, near Aberfoyle, Stirling.

    ‘As soon as the pirates get a blast of Britney, they move on as quickly as they can.’

    Steven Jones, of the Security Association for the Maritime Industry, said: ‘Pirates will go to any lengths to avoid or try to overcome the music.’

    He added: I’d imagine using Justin Bieber would be against the Geneva Convention.’

  • Russia meets Uganda onstage

    Russia meets Uganda onstage

    Russian Alex Rostotsky and the Jazz Bass Theatre performance at the Primrose hall, Imperial Royale hotel, last Friday was no ordinary jazz concert.

    It unveiled a distinctive intertwined traditional and cultural extensive bond between Russia and Uganda.

    “It’s the first time I have done a mixing of Ugandan traditional music and Russian,” revealed Rostotsky.

    This is the second time Rostotsky has performed in Kampala at the invitation of the Russian African Foundation for Science, Culture and Economic Development (RAFSCED). He was here last year performing at a concert dubbed ‘Art Splash’, which is aimed at promoting Russian business in Uganda and Ugandan business in Russia.

    And he was back last Friday to bond Ugandan culture with Russian as the chairman RAFSCED, Dr Karen Melik Simonyan, explained that the best way to unite people was to make them ‘first understand each other through promoting culture and information’.

    “This isn’t just a commercial entertainment, but a performance to promote and appreciate the different traditions and culture between Russia and Africa,” he said.

    Rostotsky, who plays the piano, was backed up by Lev Slepner on the marimba and drums and Andrew Krasilnikov on the soprano and C-melody saxophone, and German Mamaev playing the e-bass. Ilya Izotov was their sound engineer.

    The audience was captivated with the sweet melodies of traditional music from Russia and Africa. The band did Salif Keita’ Tomorrow, Night in Kampala, Rain, and Near The River. And the great dancing antics from vocalist Tatiana Shishkova sent many screaming with excitement. Rostotsky also thrilled them with cinematography insertions of live poetry and visual arts.

    Our own, Annette Kugonza and Aisha Nakato from Ndere Troupe, spiced up the concert with traditional songs from western Uganda: Ngayaya, Abakemera and Nzololo. Isaac Rucci did the emceeing and notable among the audience was the Commander Special Forces Command, Brig Muhoozi Kaneirugaba, Maj Gen Jim Muhwezi, Russian ambassador to Uganda, Ambassador Sergey Shishkin and a delegation from RAFSCED.

    By the end of the concert at 11pm, a contented audience gave a standing ovation to the band for their extraordinary performance.

    “It was awesome; very unexpected! They spiced the whole set of performance with Ugandan traditional music,” said Sheila Saltofte, a presenter with Urban Television.

    Katy Perry reveals how John Mayer (and Africa!) inspired her emotional new single ‘Unconditionally

    {{Pop superstar Katy Perry’s new album Prism comes out on Tuesday, Oct. 22. But the singer has now officially released the second single, “Unconditionally.”}}

    An emotional, soaring ballad, the song is Perry’s favorite on the album and was actually inspired by Perry’s current love, John Mayer, and a recent trip she took. “‘Unconditionally’ was influenced by my boyfriend and also really influenced by Africa,” Perry reveals to EW. “I went to Madagascar and did a UNICEF trip that changed my life and gave me this song. It’s just a simple message about loving someone and accepting them and kind of driving at you don’t have to be so self-conscious, you don’t have to fear, because essentially, everybody has their stuff. Nobody comes stuff-free. Everybody has their things and you’re never going to be perfect, and accepting that and understanding that, especially in a relationship, it makes room for a real, genuine kind of love.”
