{The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate, Dr Kizza Besigye, on Friday took the liberation message to Kiruhura, the home district of President Museveni.}
Dr Besigye, a retired colonel of the Bush War and Museveni’s former personal doctor, told supporters in Kiruhura not to succumb to intimidation and vote a candidate who is not their choice.
“Vote secretly, don’t accept when you are told to tick from the table. Go and tick from a basin,” Dr Besigye told supporters in Kazo town council.
He reiterated his pledges to improve education, healthcare, end corruption, improve agriculture and increase salaries for teachers and doctors.
Dr Besigye said it is unfortunate that farmers are selling a litre of milk at only Shs700 when they spend Shs1000 on a small bottle of mineral water.
“A kilogramme of maize is at Shs200 while that of posho (maize flour) is sold at Shs2, 000. Farmers are highly cheated, you have to put in place a government that will create a very good market for your produce,” Dr Besigye told Kiruhura residents.
He said Ugandans will remain in poverty with poor social services if they don’t vote out President Museveni.
He argued that Mr Museveni’s oversize cabinet, advisers, handlers and resident district commissioners are taking a lot of money that would have gone to improving roads, schools, hospitals and water supply.
Dr Besigye visited Rwakahaya Primary School in Buhembe parish, Kanoni Sub-county. He found the school has ramshackle structures.
The best pupil in the 2015 PLE reportedly scored aggregate 26.
There was a fracas between police and Besigye’s entourage near Bugarihe Trading Centre in Rwemikooma as he headed to Kagaramira in Nkungu Sub-county for a rally. The glass window of his vehicle was shattered. Police gave way after fierce haggling.
Dr Besigye started his campaign from Sanga Sub-county, went to Museveni’s home town of Rushere before entering Kitura Sub-county in the new Kashongi constituency. He combed Kanoni and Nkungu sub-counties before going to Ibanda District where he addressed several rallies.
Addressing a rally at Saza Grounds in Ibanda Town, Dr Besigye said 80 per cent of the farmers are poor because they are using hand hoes calling it a primitive technology. His government, he said, will avail tractors at every sub-county.
He said many farmers in Ibanda District depend on maize and promised to establish silos and food reserves so that they can get good markets inside and outside the country.
Earlier, he promised irrigation schemes in sub-counties of Bisheeshe, Nyamarebe, Kashangura and Kyeijongo and Ishongorero and Rushango town councils which are predominantly maize growers.
Dr Besigye was blocked from addressing another rally at Keihangara because it was past 6pm. Later, police clashed with his supporters, who poured on the road to greet him at Igorora Trading Centre as he exited Ibanda on the way to Mbarara for a night. Police fired teargas to scare away the cheering supporters off the road.
