    US suspends non-lethal assistance into northern Syria

    {The United States has suspended all non-lethal assistance into northern Syria after Islamist rebel forces seized armed depots belonging to the opposition Free Syrian Army, a US embassy spokesman said on Wednesday.}

    “Because of the current situation the United States has suspended deliveries of non-lethal assistance into northern Syria,” spokesman T.J. Grubisha told AFP.

    But he added that the US move would not impact on humanitarian assistance which was coordinated by international and nongovernmental organisations.

    The Islamic Front, the largest Islamist rebel force in Syria, seized the depots belonging to the Western-backed FSA near the Bab el-Hawa border crossing with Turkey on Saturday.

    The seizure came after the Front announced that it rejected the authority of the FSA command.

    The Islamic Front was formed last month when six groups merged and pledged to work towards forming an Islamic state.

    TPF5 Winner Ruth Matete apologizes for dressing

    {As the curtains came down on Tusker Project Fame’s sixth season, Kenyans were up in arms over something else.
    }

    In true TPF fashion, the finale was filled with many electrifying performances, the most memorable of which was the up-tempo duet between TPF5 winner Ruth Matete and the star of the night, Burundi’s Hope Irakoze.

    Dressed in a thigh-skimming white dress, Ruth proceeded to show the audience why she deserved to win last season as they got down and showed off their moves.

    However, the audience didn’t think otherwise after Ruth’s dress rode up her thighs as she was performing.

    This prompted a heavy backlash on social media, where her outfit was deemed as inappropriate, especially in the light of her being a Worship leader in a local church.

    Earlier this afternoon the singer took to her social media page where she posted this message in apology to all her fans. The message was met with encouraging replies from her fans, showing just how much Kenyans can be supportive.

    S Africa’s China ambassador ‘compares Mandela to Mao’

    {South Africa’s ambassador to China has according to state media compared Nelson Mandela to Mao Zedong, the Communist leader whose rule saw tens of millions killed by famine and the chaos of the Cultural Revolution.}

    “They were both very strong leaders who fought for the liberation of their people, and who also contributed to laying the foundation for further development in society,” South African ambassador Bheki Langa was quoted as saying by China’s official news agency Xinhua.

    He added that Mandela, whose death was mourned Tuesday in Soweto by dozens of world leaders — not including China’s President Xi Jinping — “valued the contribution the Chinese people, government and Party had made in ending the obnoxious system of apartheid in South Africa”.

    Xinhua headlined its report: “Mandela, Mao shared similarities: S. Africa ambassador”.

    In the West, Mao’s legacy is principally associated with the Great Leap Forward, the late-1950s industrialisation campaign that triggered widespread starvation, with academic estimates as high as 45 million deaths, and the Cultural Revolution, a bloody and turbulent social upheaval during the 1960s and 70s which remains a sensitive topic in the country.

    Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize and is widely hailed as an emblem of reconciliation for his role in South Africa’s transition to democracy.

    A South African embassy spokeswoman declined to elaborate on Langa’s comments.

    China and South Africa have stepped up their economic ties in recent years, and Pretoria has twice denied the Dalai Lama — the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader condemned as a separatist by Beijing — a visa.

    Israel passes law to detain illegal African migrants

    {Israel’s parliament has approved a law which allows illegal immigrants from Africa to be detained for up to a year without trial, MPs announced on Wednesday.}

    The government-backed bill amends earlier legislation from 2012 under which illegal immigrants could be held for three years without trial that was overturned by the Supreme Court in September.

    The new bill passed by 30 votes in favour to 15 against during a late-night vote in the 120-member parliament, or Knesset.

    It was the latest in a series of measures aimed at cracking down on the numbers of Africans entering the country illegally, which Israel says poses a threat to the state’s Jewish character.

    Last year, Israel launched a crackdown on what it said were 60,000 illegal African immigrants, rounding up and deporting 3,920 by the end of the year, and building a hi-tech fence along the border with Egypt.

    On November 24, the cabinet approved measures aimed at tackling the question of illegal immigrants, including a crackdown on employers and financial incentives for those agreeing to return to their country of origin.

    It has also invested in the construction of a sprawling detention facility for illegals arriving in Israel and for immigrants already in the country who “disturb the public order,” the premier’s office said.

    UN Troops Start Operations Against FDLR Rebels

    {United Nations peacekeeping troops in Democratic Republic of Congo have launched operations against a Rwandan Hutu rebel militia operating along Congo’s border with Rwanda, the U.N. commander said on Tuesday.
    }
    Defeating Rwandan FDLR insurgents, who have long been used as a pretext for intervention in Congo by neighboring Rwanda, is seen as the next step in ending decades of conflict along the veteran foes’ shared border, weeks after the Congolese Tutsi-led M23 rebels were defeated.

    General Carlos Alberto dos Santos Cruz said on U.N.-backed Radio Okapi on Tuesday that his troops would attack the FDLR rebel forces in a bid to secure a road between the eastern Congolese towns of Kitchanga and Pinga.

    “Everyone knows that the presence of armed groups along the border creates problems with the neighboring states,” he said.

    In November, U.N. soldiers in a newly formed intervention brigade with a robust mandate supported the Congolese army with artillery and attack helicopters in defeating the M23 rebellion, the most serious in Congo in the last decade.

    The brigade, made up of troops from South Africa, Tanzania and Malawi, will also lead operations against the FDLR, which has launched sporadic attacks in Rwanda in an attempt to destabilize Rwandan President Paul Kagame’s government.

    “We have already intensified patrols and observation along the border and we are planning operations against all rebel positions along the frontier,” Dos Santos Cruz added.

    At the start of December, the U.N. also unveiled surveillance drones that it will use to monitor the volatile border between Congo and its neighbors Rwanda and Uganda.
