  • Roadside bomb kills bus passengers in Kurram district

    {Security forces are searching an area where an explosion targeting a passenger bus left 14 dead and 10 wounded.}

    Islamabad, Pakistan – A roadside bomb targeting a bus has killed at least 14 people in the northwestern Pakistani district of Kurram, local officials say.

    The explosion occurred in central Kurram as the vehicle travelled to the town of Sadda, about 250km west of the capital Islamabad, early on Tuesday morning, Majidullah, a local administration official, told Al Jazeera.

    “There were about 23 passengers in the van, and there was a bomb placed on the roadside near the village of Godar, he said.

    “Security forces have now initiated a search operation in the area.”

    Officials said that at least five women and four children were among the 14 killed, and at least 10 people were wounded in the explosion.

    Kurram lies along Pakistan’s northwestern border with Afghanistan, and has seen a series of attacks in recent days, often targeting the district’s sizeable Shia Muslim minority.

    The Pakistani Taliban’s Jamaat ur Ahrar faction has claimed responsibility for the attack.

    “This morning Jamaat ur Ahrar’s fighters attacked a census team through a remote-controlled roadside bomb at Godar, near Kurram’s agency’s main town of Parachinar, under Operation Ghazi Abdul Rasheed,” said Asad Mansoor, TTP Jamaat ur Ahrar spokesman.

    “Through this attack more than ten Shia heathens and the census team were sent to their terrible fate.”

    In a statement, the military said it had dispatched a transport helicopter to move those in need of critical medical care.

    The wounded were being treated at hospitals in Sadda, Parachinar and Peshawar, said Majidullah.

    Earlier this month, at least six people were killed in the eastern city of Lahore when a Taliban suicide bomber targeted a census team and soldiers guarding it.

    Last month, a bomb targeting a Shia mosque in Kurram’s main town of Parachinar killed at least 10 people and wounded dozens more.

    In January, a bomb explosion ripped through a busy Parachinar vegetable market, killing at least 22 people.

    The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for both of those attacks. Pakistan has been battling the group – an umbrella organisation of armed religious groups – since 2007, and has launched a series of military operations against them, including one in Kurram district that concluded in 2011.

    In response to the latest spate of attacks, Kurram’s residents have formed tribal militias to work with Pakistan’s security forces to secure the area. They have dug trenches around Parachinar, as well as establishing bunkers at strategic locations.

    This area, however, had no increased security, according to local official Majidullah.

    “This area is in central Kurram – there is no increased security there,” he said.

    Pakistan began the second round of a countrywide population census on Tuesday, with more than 84,000 census workers dispatched to 87 districts across the country. It is Pakistan’s first census since 1998, and the military has deployed more than 200,000 troops to provide security for the exercise.

  • Earthquake strikes off coast of Valparaiso

    {Magnitude 7.1 temblor off Valparaiso did not cause any serious damage.}

    A major earthquake of magnitude 7.1 has struck off the west coast of Chile, rocking the capital Santiago and briefly causing alarm along the Pacific Coast but not producing any serious damage.

    The quake on Monday was centred 35km west of the coastal city of Valparaiso at a shallow depth of 10km below the sea, and about 137km from Santiago, the US Geological Survey said.

    “It was short but very powerful,” said Paloma Salamo, a 26-year-old nurse, who was in a clinic just north of Valparaiso when the quake struck.

    People ran out of the facility carrying children and some headed for the hills when the tsunami alarm sounded, she told Reuters news agency, but calm was soon restored.

    Officials cancelled a tsunami warning that had been issued in Valparaiso after the Chilean Navy and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake was not expected to produce a dangerous seismic sea wave. The centre reported small tsunami waves of 15cm.

    There were no reports of structural damage in Valparaiso, but mobile phone networks were down in some places, a spokesman with the local government in Valparaiso said.

    “We have no reports of victims or significant damage. There have been some landslides in some places, without major complications,” said Interior Minister Mario Fernandez.

    “In general the situation is pretty normal bearing in mind the quake’s intensity.”

    Chile lies on what is known as the “Ring of Fire” – an arc of fault lines that circles the Pacific Basin and is prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

    The north of the country was struck by an 8.3 temblor followed by a tsunami in September 2015, killing 15 people.

    In 2010 another quake measuring 8.8, also followed by a tsunami, struck the centre and south of the country, killing more than 500 people.

  • ‘500kg’ Egyptian woman’s sister accuses Indian doctors of lying

    {The sister of Eman Abd El Aty, an Egyptian woman thought to have been the world’s heaviest, has accused doctors of lying about her weight loss after surgery in India.}

    She underwent surgery in Mumbai’s Saifee hospital, and last week doctors said she had lost 250kg (550lbs).

    But her sister said this was untrue, adding that her sister was in delicate health as she may have had a stroke.

    The hospital has angrily rejected the allegations.

    The row began on Monday when Ms Abd El Aty’s sister, Shaimaa Selim, released a short video on social media, alleging that her sister was still unable to speak or move, and had not lost as much weight as the hospital was claiming.

    On Tuesday, she told the BBC that the hospital was lying about her weight loss.
    “He [Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, who led the operation] didn’t weigh her before and after. If he has any proof of her weight loss, show us the video of her weight before and after.”

    Describing her sister’s health as delicate, she said: “Oxygen is not normal in her body. She has to wear an oxygen mask almost all the time. There is a tube from her nose to her stomach because she can’t eat or drink well from her mouth.

    But a spokeswoman for the hospital told the BBC that Ms Abd El Aty was weighed again on Monday and she now weighed 172kg.

    Dr Lakdawala also strongly denied the allegations in a tweet.

    Eman Abd El Aty suffered a stroke at the age of 11 and her weight meant she was unable to leave her home for 25 years.

    She was flown in a special aircraft in January to Mumbai’s Saifee hospital where she underwent bariatric surgery in March by a team of doctors, led by Dr Lakdawala.

    The hospital says she can now fit into a wheelchair and sit up for longer periods of time. It released new pictures of Ms Abd El Aty following weight reduction surgery.

    Reports say Ms Selim is unhappy because the hospital authorities believe that Ms Abd El Aty’s treatment is almost over and that she can be sent home to Alexandria soon.

    “There are cases like this in other parts of the world. In America and in other countries, there are heavyweight people. They have been in the hospital for one or two years to lose weight and become normal.

    “But just after a month or two here, the doctors say that I can take my sister back. I asked them how, as she is still very big and if anything happens to her in Egypt, how can I go to a hospital there?

    “It would be impossible and nobody would help me in Egypt. I said, ‘Please please keep her for a long time to help her lose weight’,” her sister said.

    Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, is used as a last resort to treat people who are dangerously obese (having a body mass index of 40 or above, or 35 with other obesity-related health conditions).

  • Henri Van Breda denies South Africa axe murders

    {A man accused of killing his parents and older brother in a frenzied axe attack in Stellenbosh in South Africa has pleaded not guilty to murder.}

    Henri van Breda, 21, is also charged with the attempted murder of his sister who survived with severe head injuries.

    Mr Van Breda said in a statement that the murders were carried out by an axe-wielding intruder.

    No arrests were made in this horrific case for 18 months until the accused handed himself over in June 2016.

    Mr Van Breda’s sister Marli is expected to be a key witness during the trial in Cape Town.

    But there are concerns about how much she remembers about the night of the murders as she suffers from amnesia. She was 16 at the time of the attack.

    The run-up to the trial has attracted international interest in the story of a son born into privilege allegedly unleashing a brutal attack on his family, whose fortune was estimated at $16m (£12.5m).

    In a statement read out by his lawyer, Mr Van Breda said he was in a toilet when he saw a man wielding an axe hacking his brother Rudi in bed.

    His father, who then burst in, “trying to tackle the attacker” was also struck by the alleged intruder, he said.

    “I also recall the attacker was laughing”, he added. His mother and sister were then assaulted.

    Mr Van Breda is also facing charges of tampering with a crime scene.

  • Mahiga led mission favours government of national unity in DRC

    {Ministerial Committee of the Organ Troika (MCO-T) mission to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has said there is need for peaceful and transparent elections in the vast African nation.}

    President John Magufuli deployed mission to DRC ruled that there was consensus on the need for the credible elections to move the mineral-rich country into a new political and democratic dispensation.

    The mission made the remarks after it was deployed by the President John Magufuli, chairperson of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.

    Dr Magufuli, as the Chairperson of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, dispatched the team to assess the current political and security situation in the country, including the execution of the Episcopal Council of Catholic Bishops (CENCO) mediated Agreement of last December.

    The mission, led by Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Augustine Mahiga also urged all political stakeholders to support the establishment of the government of national unity, which will encompass inclusiveness, national unity and reconciliation.

    The mission was within the mandate received from the Extraordinary Summit held in Lozitha, Swaziland on April 2017, whereby Summit had “mandated the Organ Ministerial Troika to immediately conduct a follow-up mission to the DRC.

    The committee welcomed the efforts of DRC President Joseph Kabila to push for the political process, despite the obstacles encountered in the implementation of the Political Agreement and, in particular, the Special Arrangements.

    It noted with concern that the demise of the leader of the Opposition, Etienne Tshisekediwa Mulumba, has complicated the implementation of the Special Arrangements, resulting into political procrastination in the appointment of the Chairperson of the National

  • Uganda:Nyanzi returns to Luzira

    {Makerere University Researcher Dr Stella Nyanzi has been sent back to Luzira by Buganda Road Magistrate Court pending an application for the revision of her case filed in the high court by her lawyers.}

    Lawyer Nicholas Opiyo asked for an adjournment of the case pending determination of their application seeking to block a planned psychiatric examination against Dr Stella Nyanzi. The mental examinations were sought by the state during Nyanzi’s maiden appearance before the magistrate’s court early this month.

    Nyanzi is charged with two counts of cyber harassment and offensive communication contrary to provisions of the Computer Misuse Act. Nyanzi was also charged with using the internet to disturb the peace and right to privacy of the president.

    Prosecution alleges that Stella Nyanzi used her social media pages to refer to President Yoweri Museveni as “a pair of buttocks.” She denied the charges but told court that she always writes ‘metaphorically’ to deliver messages to ‘those in power’.

    In reference to her vulgar and erotic posts, prosecutor Jonathan Muwaganya filed an application on April 10, asking court to order that Nyanzi is subjected to a psychiatric examination. Muwaganya told court that Nyanzi has a history of erratic psychiatric disorder and was once a patient at Butabika Hospital. The application was based on the affidavit by SP Mboniva Emmanuel, one of the police officers investigating Nyanzi’s case.

    But her lawyers rushed to the High Court to challenge the request saying that the state wants to use the mental test to declare Nyanzi an idiot and send her to a mental health facility. Lawyer Opiyo told court that the defense team hoped the high court application would be heard before today’s appearance. However, High Court has set tomorrow as the hearing date for the application.

    Opiyo said that the state’s application was brought in bad faith and with utmost act of ambush to deny them an appropriate response. He said they need time to respond to all arguments raised by the state in its application for mental health examination. He also argued that the defense team received a copy of the application after arriving at the court.

    Presiding Magistrate James Eremye said Nyanzi was sent back to Luzira on the request of her defense team.

    Nyanzi had recently taken up a campaign code-named ‘Pads for Girls’ in which she castigated government for failing to fulfill its commitment to provide sanitary pads to all schoolgirls. The provision was part of President Yoweri Museveni’s campaign pledges ahead of the 2016 general election.

  • DRC ‘should not have shown video of UN expert killings’

    {The United Nations has criticized Congolese authorities for releasing a video showing the grisly murders of two UN experts, saying the move could harm the investigation and was traumatic for the families.}

    “The video is evidence in the crime. We don’t think it should have been released. We don’t think it should have been shown,” said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

    Congolese authorities showed the two-minute video to journalists, in an apparent bid to address suspicions that Kinshasa may have had a hand in the murders.

    Dujarric said the video was authentic. “One can only imagine how traumatic it is to the families of the victims,” he said.

    The video showed Michael Sharp and Zaida Catalan surrounded by seven people speaking Tshiluba, the main language of Kasai, armed with machetes, sticks and one with an old gun.

    Through an interpreter out of shot, the armed men promise to show the location of mass graves in the bush. Seemingly worried, the white man asks the interpreter in French with a marked accent: “Why are they armed and angry?”

    The two foreigners are quickly forced to sit on the ground before orders are barked and they are shot. One of the victims is then beheaded.

    “This is how the men of Kamwina Nsapu operate,” government spokesman Lambert Mende told reporters, saying the murder showed “the work of terrorists that must be wiped out by all means.”

    Two suspects were detained over the kidnap and murder of Sharp, who was American, and dual Swedish-Chilean national Catalan, earlier this month, but one escaped with the help of police guarding them.

    Sharp and Catalan were members of the UN panel of experts who were seeking to investigate reports of mass graves in the central Kasai region.

    Hundreds of people have been killed in violence in diamond-rich Kasai since a tribal uprising began after traditional chieftain Kamwina Nsapu was killed in August last year.

    DRC gov't spokesperson Lambert Mende, seen here in 2012, said terrorists must be "wiped out".

  • Childhood development center for Rusizi cross border business woman unveiled

    {The Ministry of Trade, Industry and East African Affairs (MINEACOM) has launched construction of a cross-border market in Rusizi district which will have buildings for early childhood development to facilitate child’s education.}

    The Minister of Trade, Industry and East African Affairs François Kanimba unveiled last Friday as he laid a foundation stone at the construction site of the cross border market in Rusizi.

    “We have realized that 74% of traders here are women. You would come and find a woman holding a child and a sack of cabbages and tomatoes in the other hand. Such situation really hampers both child’s education and commerce,” he said.

    “That is why we are building childhood development centers so that a mother can negotiate with managers of the center to take care of the child during the time she is conducting her doing business,” he added.

    The cross border market in Rusizi district is expected to be completed in one year. The same facility is also available in Rubavu district and accommodates between 20 and 30 children on daily basis.

    Children are received from 7:00 hours to be returned at 18:00 hours. A parent leaving the child is required to pay Rwf 300 for food and other needs.

    The initiative was adopted following the matter of parents who would leave their children helpless at the border as they cross into DRC for business.

    Kankindi Marie Rose, one of cross border business women told IGIHE that the initiative is welcomed as it will allow them leave their children in comfort and safety.

They have been present at MINUSTAH since 2010…you have been dynamic as prominent players in all facets of Haiti Nation Police development.”

    He emphasized that “Rwanda is a very important partner of the United Nations in the context of peacekeeping” which he added that this fact is defined by the presence of over 6000 Rwandan peacekeepers in all missions currently, who also include military and prisons.

    MINUSTAH has 178 Rwandan police officers, including 160 under Formed Police Unit (FPU).

    “I would like to remind you, that like your predecessors, you have distinguished yourself by your significant participation in the implementation of the development plan of Haiti National Police. Thus, through your continued commitment, you have contributed to the maintenance of a secure and stable environment, conducive to the revival of the country,” said Gen Monchotte.

  • Did you know that there are different types of tears? Find out more

    {A tear is a watery fluid that trickles down from the eyes when certain emotions are triggered in humans and animals. Examples include happiness, sadness, pain, etc. Now to the types of tears there are.}

    Many people assume that all tears are the same, but that’s not true. There is more than one type of tear, and they are released under different circumstances.

    The first type of tear is Basal tears. This type of tear happens when you blink, contains elements like water, mucin, lipids, lysozyme, lactoferrin, lipocalin, lacritin, immunoglobulin, glucose, urea, sodium, and potassium (proteins, salts and fats to help clean, lubricate and fight infection in the eye).

    The second type of tear is called psychic tears. This type has an entirely different chemical make-up and contains hormones and natural pain killers. This type is usually visible during emotions like anger, happiness, etc.

    Finally, there’s also the reflex tear. As the name implies, this type of tear comes spontaneously, especially if there’s a foreign body threatening the eye.

    Don’t forget that it’s not necessary to wash your eyes. Your eyes do not require a wash. The tears produced in them sufficiently perform that task.
