  • E-cigarettes potentially as harmful as tobacco cigarettes, study shows

    {Chemists’ novel device quickly detects carcinogenic chemicals, DNA damage from e-cigarette vapor}

    A study by chemists at the University of Connecticut offers new evidence that electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes are potentially as harmful as tobacco cigarettes.

    Using a new low-cost, 3-D printed testing device, UConn researchers found that e-cigarettes loaded with a nicotine-based liquid are potentially as harmful as unfiltered cigarettes when it comes to causing DNA damage.

    The researchers also found that vapor from non-nicotine e-cigarettes caused as much DNA damage as filtered cigarettes, possibly due to the many chemical additives present in e-cigarette vapors. Cellular mutations caused by DNA damage can lead to cancer.

    The findings appear in the journal ACS Sensors.

    How much DNA damage e-cigarettes cause depends on the amount of vapor the user inhales, the other additives present, whether nicotine or non-nicotine liquid is used, and other factors, says Karteek Kadimisetty, a postdoctoral researcher in UConn’s chemistry department and the study’s lead author.

    But one finding was clear.

    “From the results of our study, we can conclude that e-cigarettes have as much potential to cause DNA damage as unfiltered regular cigarettes,” Kadimisetty says.

    Electronic cigarettes are battery-powered devices that heat up liquid and turn it into an aerosol vapor that can be inhaled. Using e-cigarettes is also called ‘vaping.’ The contents of e-cigarettes, called e-liquid or e-juice, are usually made up of propylene glycol, glycerine, nicotine, and flavorings such as menthol, cherry, vanilla, or mint. Non-nicotine e-cigarettes are also available.

    Frequently viewed as a less toxic alternative for people looking to break their habit of smoking tobacco cigarettes, modern e-cigarettes have steadily risen in popularity since they first appeared on the commercial market in 2004. How much e-cigarettes contribute to serious health problems and whether they serve as a gateway for future tobacco smokers remains the subject of much debate. Growing concerns about the potential health impact of electronic cigarettes however, prompted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to tighten its regulation of e-cigarettes in 2016.

    UConn’s scientists decided to look into whether the chemicals in e-cigarettes could cause damage to human DNA while testing a new electro-optical screening device they developed in their lab. The small 3-D printed device is believed to be the first of its kind capable of quickly detecting DNA damage, or genotoxicity, in environmental samples in the field, the researchers say.

    The device uses micropumps to push liquid samples across multiple ‘microwells’ embedded in a small carbon chip. The wells are pre-loaded with reactive human metabolic enzymes and DNA. As the samples drop into the wells, new metabolites that have the potential to cause DNA damage are formed. Reactions between the metabolites and the DNA generate light that is captured by a camera. Within five minutes, users can see how much relative DNA damage a sample produces by the intensity of the light detected in each well.

    The device is unique in that it converts chemicals into their metabolites during testing, which replicates what happens in the human body, Kadimisetty says.

    Bioassays currently used to determine the genotoxicity of environmental samples may be more comprehensive, but they are often time-consuming and costly. Lab equipment alone can cost tens of thousands of dollars. The array developed at UConn provides an important initial screening tool for genotoxicity in just minutes. The chip central to the device is disposable and costs only a dollar to make, thanks to recent advances in 3-D printing.

    “What we developed is very cheap to make, efficient, and can be used by almost anyone,” says UConn chemistry professor James Rusling, the senior researcher on the study.

    Affordable and efficient “labs on a chip” is a specialty of Rusling’s lab, which has previously created miniature arrays that can detect antibodies to food allergens and cancer biomarker proteins. Rusling says similar arrays potentially could be used for quick genotoxic screening during drug development, for monitoring or testing fresh water supplies, and for the early detection of aggressive forms of cancer.

    In the current study, the researchers extracted samples from e-cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes using an artificial inhalation technique. Cigarettes were connected to a tube that contained a cotton plug. The researchers then used a syringe at the other end of the tube to replicate inhalation. Samples came from the chemicals captured in the cotton.

    The team set their test so that 20 puffs of an e-cigarette was roughly equivalent to smoking one tobacco cigarette, a ratio supported by other research. The team gathered samples at 20, 60, and 100 puffs. The potential DNA damage from e-cigarettes increased with the number of puffs, Kadimisetty says.

    “Some people use e-cigarettes heavily because they think there is no harm,” he says. “We wanted to see exactly what might be happening to DNA, and we had the resources in our lab to do that.”

    There are potentially hundreds of chemicals in e-cigarettes that could be contributing to DNA damage, Kadimisetty says. Rather than test for all of them, the UConn team targeted three known carcinogenic chemicals found in tobacco cigarettes. They then loaded their device’s microwells with specific enzymes that would convert those chemicals into metabolites. If these chemicals were in the sample, the test gave them a reading for genotoxicity. If the chemicals were not present, there would be no reaction.

    The results of tests conducted by UConn chemists show that nicotine electronic cigarettes are equivalent, if not slightly worse, than unfiltered (nf) tobacco cigarettes when it comes to causing DNA damage. Non-nicotine (nn) e-cigarettes cause damage similar to filtered tobacco cigarettes. The amount of relative DNA damage is reflected by the intensity of the color in each circle with brighter colors reflecting more damage.

  • World’s ‘first named dinosaur’ reveals new teeth with scanning tech

    {Pioneering technology has shed fresh light on the world’s first scientifically-described dinosaur fossil — over 200 years after it was first discovered — thanks to research by WMG at the University of Warwick and the University of Oxford’s Museum of Natural History.}

    Professor Mark Williams at WMG has revealed five previously unseen teeth in the jawbone of the Megalosaurus — and that historical repairs on the fossil may have been less extensive than previously thought.

    Using state of the art CT scanning technology and specialist 3D analysis software, Professor Williams took more than 3000 X-ray images of the world-famous Megalosaurus jawbone, creating a digital three-dimensional image of the fossil.

    In an unprecedented level of analysis, Professor Williams at WMG was able to see inside the jawbone for the first time, tracing the roots of teeth and the extent of different repairs.

    Some damage occurred to the specimen when it was removed from the rock, possibly shortly after it was discovered.

    Records at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History suggest that some restoration work may have been undertaken by a museum assistant between 1927 and 1931, while repairing the specimen for display — but there are no details about the extent of the repairs or the materials used.

    The scans have revealed previously unseen teeth that were growing deep within the jaw before the animal died — including the remains of old, worn teeth and also tiny newly growing teeth.

    The scans also show the true extent of repairs on the fossil for the first time, revealing that there may have been at least two phases of repair, using different types of plaster. This new information will help the museum make important decisions about any future restoration work on the specimen.

    This research was made possible through a collaboration between Professor Williams’ research group at WMG, University of Warwick — including PhD researcher Paul Wilson — and Professor Paul Smith, director of the Oxford University Museum of Natural History.

    Professor Williams commented: “Being able to use state-of-the-art technology normally reserved for aerospace and automotive engineering to scan such a rare and iconic natural history specimen was a fantastic opportunity.

    “When I was growing up I was fascinated with dinosaurs and clearly remember seeing pictures of the Megalosaurus jaw in books that I read. Having access to and scanning the real thing was an incredible experience.”

    The Megalosaurus jawbone is on display at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History alongside other bones from the skeleton.

    Megalosaurus — which means ‘Great Lizard’ — was a meat-eating dinosaur which lived in the Middle Jurassic, around 167 million years ago. It would have been about 9 metres long and weighed about 1.4 tonnes (1400 kg).

    The research was recently presented at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)’s International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference in Torino, Italy.

  • Southern Province Governor roots for effective Neighborhood Watch

    {The Governor of the Southern Province, Rose Mureshyankwano has called upon grassroots leaders in the region to work hand-in-hand with communities in order to sustain the prevailing peace and security.}

    The Governor made the call on June 12 in Ruhango District where he presided over a district security meeting.

    The security meeting was also attended by the Southern Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Gilbert Gumira and the mayor of Ruhango Francois Xavier Mbabazi and other local leaders in the district.

    Governor Mureshyankwano appealed to local leaders to work with security organs to prevent crimes and arrest people suspected to be indulging in criminal activities.

    “We can’t entertain anything that can interfere with the current pace of peace, security and development,” the Governor said.

    “I urge you to strengthen your cooperation with security organs by identifying individuals involved in unlawful acts and share real time information with police to pave way for investigations. Community policing is for you to implement with the residents while working hand-in-hand with the police,” she added.

    ACP Gumira thanked local leaders who promptly share information with police on any potential security threats but noted that there is still more to be done to close any loopholes that may lead to lawlessness.

    He also emphasized the need to further get closer to the citizens and involve them in safety and security activities.

    “Without the trust and involvement of the community, maintaining security and safety is difficult. Therefore, through community policing, it is everyone’s responsibility to safeguard the welfare of their neighborhood.”

    “Do not disregard any information you receive about potential threats to peace and security but rather communicate with police for us do professional assessment and act accordingly,” ACP Gumira said.

    {The National Electoral Commission (NEC) has received candidature credentials from Dr Frank Habineza and Mwenedata Gilbert for presidential race in the build up to the elections due in August 2017.}

    Dr Habineza was accompanied by members from his party to NEC headquarters in Kimihurura. He presented birth certificate, national identity card, a document proving he has handed back the second nationality, habitation certificate among others as required by the law.

    NEC chairman Professor Kalisa Mbanda who verified the documents advised Dr Habineza to include a photocopy of the voters’ card which was missing.

    After the submission, Dr Habineza told the media that their party has big chances of winning the August presidential vote.

    “Our political party, established in 2009, strives for political transformations in Rwanda. We have over 51% chances of winning elections,” he said.

    “We are going to put emphasis on mobilization and raising funds for proper preparations. The most challenging issue was submission of the credentials for candidacy. We are now to concentrate on mobilizing our members to be active in campaigns,” he added.

    Mwenedata Gilbert also got nominated as an independent candidate.

    “We have experienced hurdles while soliciting 600 signatures, getting 12 from each district. But it is a great pleasure for us to have succeeded,” he told the media.

    Barafinda Sekikubo Fred from Kanombe, another man who never announced presidential ambitions before surprised everyone presented as he emerged among aspirants presenting himself for nomination.

    Presidential nominations that kicked off yesterday will close on 23rd June 2017 and approved candidates will be announced on 7th July 2017.

  • Political parties in heated discussions over presidential polls

    {As Rwandans warm up to the upcoming presidential elections slated for August 2017, some political parties have come up to vociferously defend their decision to throw their weight behind President Paul Kagame, saying their decisions are informed by the overwhelming support demonstrated by Rwandans during the petition that saw amendment of the constitution to pave way for the extension of presidential term limits in a December 2015 referendum.}

    Representatives from four political parties yesterday held a discussion on the recent decisions from Liberal Party (PL) and (PSD) of supporting President Paul Kagame during upcoming presidential elections.

    The talk show hosted at RTV attracted Rwanda Patriotic Front commissioner, Sheikh Abdul Karim Harelimana, PL Secretary General Dr Odette Nyiramirimo, PSD Secretary General Dr Ngabitsinze Jean Chrysostome and Dr Frank Habineza president and flag bearer of Green Party.

    During the talk show, Dr Nyiramirimo explained that deciding to support Kagame doesn’t mean no one else can lead the country but the party recognized petitions from Rwandans who voted to amend the constitution waiving off term limits.

    Dr Ngabitsinze from PSD said the decision was made after countrywide intensive consultations of all members a majority of who accepted to back Kagame.

    “Before the referendum in 2015 we held a general assembly in which we agreed to chose a presidential candidate. We didn’t agree on Kagame or someone else.We later held discussions at national level and found Kagame with outstanding competencies,” he said.

    Meanwhile Dr Frank Habineza said he perceived the decision of PL and PSD into two perspectives. “First, we were disappointed by the decision because we felt Rwanda should support pluralism.. It should be better if they all share their diverse ideas to support development. On the other hand, it is a good gesture because some members who failed to get their party’s flag bearer will vote for us,” he said.

    Sheikh Abdul Karim Harelimana from RPF however objected Dr Frank Habineza’s notions and said; “Firstly, PL and PSD did freely express their views as granted in the constitution. Indeed, it is the right of every Rwandan.”

    Sheikh Abdul Karim explained that many citizens need the leadership of president Kagame which was attested through the majority voting ‘yes’ in 2015 referendum. Dr Ngabitsinze from PSD cited statistics from previous presidential polls to show emphasize that Dr. Habineza won’t be supported.

    “If president Kagame won elections with 93% in 2010, PSD with 5% and PL with 2%, how do you think some of us will vote for you? I don’t think you can obtain 1% votes. It is good for you to participate as a young politician but we have longstanding 25 years of experience in politics in Rwanda. So we are experienced more than you. You stand no chance,” he said.

    “When we decided to support Kagame it didn’t mean we will keep quiet. We will campaign for him,” he added.

    PL backed Kagame in 2003 presidential polls but nominated own candidate, Prosper Higiro in 2010 elections.

    Nyiramirimo explained that they are likely to nominate own candidate in next elections because Kagame revealed that he doesn’t want to become the unique leader of the country.

    Sheikh Harelimana said that “President Paul Kagame can’t be compared with others.I am used to tell people not to compare the Sun and the Earth which is untrue. Kagame demonstrated potential over the past 23 years.”

    Dr. Habineza said he is glad that the government of Rwanda allows freedom of expression and hopes ‘elections will be held freely in transparency…allowing us to express our views leaving the choice for citizens.”

    Presidential elections are slated on 3rd and 4th August 2017 respectively from the diaspora and inside the country.

  • Resist people undermining our progress-Kaboneka tells youth

    {The Minister of Local Government (MINALOC), Francis Kaboneka has requested the youth to maximize available opportunities and maintain the country’s achievements by resisting those undermining the attained progress through social media platforms. }

    Kaboneka made the request yesterday in an event of mobilizing the youth to actively participate in upcoming presidential elections slated for August 2017.

    The event was organized by Miss Rwanda 2016 Mutesi Jolly.

    “You are lucky for you were born in a good country. At our time, we were refugees and would hardly access education. You have opportunities of benefiting from organized forums where you meet to share ideas. You have to preserve the achievements and resist those who are always painting a gloomy picture of our country. You have to prove them wrong,” he said.

    The commander of Rwanda Defense Forces in Rubavu and Nyabihu districts, Col Kayumba Alexis told the youth that Rwanda overcame the dark past.

    “I was at your age in 1990. I returned to Rwanda believing the country was full of safety and progress as told by parents. I however witnessed something different as I was welcomed by bullets. I am now witnessing the beauty of the country having done away with the volatile past. Transformations are apparent,” he said.

    Miss Mutesi Jolly requested the youth to be vigilant as they support a candidate of their choice during the upcoming elections.

    “Fellow youth, we are the strength of the nation. We are the ones who destroyed it, liberated it and rebuilding it. Let’s join hands to preserve achievements. You have to be cautious against seductions from politicians as you make choice for whom to support in presidential polls. You have to elect the one who guarantees security, education and good governance,” she said.

    Miss Rwanda 2016 Mutesi Jolly plans to tour the country mobilizing the youth during the pre-election period.

  • Morocco offers to mediate Qatar-GCC crisis

    {Morocco, a close ally of the Gulf countries, says it will remain neutral and offers to facilitate dialogue.}

    Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has offered to mediate a diplomatic row between Qatar and three Gulf Arab states that severed diplomatic relations with Doha and have since imposed a debilitating blockade on the country.

    The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Morocco said in a statement on Sunday that the kingdom was ready to play a “constructive and neutral” role in this crisis.

    “If the parties so wish, the Kingdom of Morocco is ready to offer its services to foster a frank and comprehensive dialogue on the basis of non-interference in internal affairs and the fight against religious extremism,” the statement read.

    “Because of the strong personal ties of sincere fraternity and mutual consideration between King Mohammed VI – and His brother Kings and Emirs of the Gulf countries, the Kingdom of Morocco has been careful not to pay into public statements and hasty statements which only reinforce discord and deepen differences,” the ministry said in the statement.

    It added that the King had called on all parties “to be wise in order to reduce tension, to overcome this crisis and to finally settle the causes that led to this, in accordance with the spirit which has always prevailed within the GCC.”

    “The Kingdom favours a constructive neutrality, which cannot confine it to passive observation of a disturbing escalation between brotherly countries.”

    The dispute between Qatar and the Arab countries escalated after false remarks attributed to Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani were published on Qatar’s state-run news agency by hackers.

    Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt severed relations with Qatar on Monday, accusing it of supporting “extremists” and their regional rival Iran.

    The Qatari government has dismissed the allegations as “baseless” and said that it has been leading the region in attacking what it called the roots of “terrorism”, including giving young people hope through jobs, educating hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees and funding community programmes to challenge the agendas of armed groups.

    “Our position on countering terrorism is stronger than many of the signatories of the joint statement – a fact that has been conveniently ignored by the authors,” the government said.

  • Men released after easyJet flight ‘presented no danger’

    {Three British businessmen, detained after passengers complained they talked about ‘terrorism’, released without charge.}

    German authorities found no evidence that three British men, reported by fellow passengers on a London-bound plane to have been having a “suspicious conversation” about terrorism, posed any danger.

    Passengers on easyJet flight EZY3246 on Saturday, travelling from Slovenia to England, complained to airline staff that the men were talking about “terrorist matters”.

    Mid-air, the plane was diverted and made an emergency landing in Germany’s cologne.

    The accused trio were detained.

    “The criminal investigation against them has been halted. No evidence was found,” a local police spokesman said on Sunday, announcing that the men were released without charge. “We now believe that there was never any real danger.”

    The unnamed men, who worked for a British company, are aged 31, 38 and 48.

    It was not immediately clear when the men, who were returning to London after a business trip, would travel onto Stansted Airport as planned.

    {{Backpack detonated}}

    Passengers on Saturday’s flight had claimed one of the men carried a book on which the word “kill” appeared with a sniper rifle on its cover, police and state prosecutors said in a statement.

    Dozens of novels include the word kill in titles, and many feature guns on covers.

    The German Bild newspaper said passengers told airline personnel they had heard the men using words including “bomb” and “explosive”, and said one carried a suspicious backpack.

    That backpack, belonging to the 48-year old, was examined and blown up in a controlled explosion.

    Nothing dangerous was ultimately found to have been in the bag or on the aircraft.

    The incident forced the diversion of 17 inbound flights, delays in 20 departing flights and cancellation of two flights, a spokeswoman for Cologne airport said, adding that air traffic had returned to normal after a three-hour interruption.

    Nine people received medical treatment after all 151 passengers were evacuated from the Airbus 319 aircraft using emergency slides.

    The remaining passengers had departed on another easyJet plane for London earlier on Sunday.

    EasyJet said passengers received hotel vouchers and meals during their stay, and thanked them for their understanding.

    “The safety of easyJet passengers and crew is our highest priority,” the company said in a statement.

    They said the alleged conversation could not be verified.

    Seventeen other passengers and the easyJet crew were questioned about the incident at Cologne police headquarters, police said in a statement.

    Several European countries are currently on high alert following a number of deadly attacks.

    Amid this climate, several airlines in the United States and Europe have recently removed innocent passengers of Middle Eastern or Asian descent from planes on unfounded allegations by fellow passengers, leading to claims of racial discrimination.

    In August 2016, easyJet forced British Muslim siblings out of a plane on the runway in London, where they were intrerrogated by armed police after passengers falsely claimed they were members of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS).

  • Qatar denounces Gulf states’ ‘policy of domination’

    {‘Orchestrated campaign’ against Qatar to change ‘independent foreign policy’ is not going to work, special envoy says.}

    A senior counter-terrorism adviser to Qatar’s foreign minister has hit out at the diplomatic squeeze on Doha by several Gulf states, calling it a “policy of domination and control”.

    Mutlaq al-Qahtani, a special envoy to Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, said the decision to sever ties by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt – as well as other allies – over Qatar’s alleged funding of armed groups would not prove successful.

    “We have our national committees on terror financing and counter-terrorism,” he told Al Jazeera. “We also have our preventive action plan, but more importantly, we work very hard on tackling the root cause of terrorism.”

    When questioned about his country hosting the Taliban, Qahtani said that this was “absolutely a request by the US government”.

    “We were facilitating the talks between the Americans, the Taliban and the government of Afghanistan, because this is our foreign policy: to facilitate talks, to mediate and to bring peace,” he said.

    Regarding the list of individuals and entities linked to Qatar over terrorism, Qahtani denounced it as “misleading” and “not credible”. “Most of the names in the list are not in Doha,” he added. “They do not live in Doha and they have never been to Doha.”

    The tiny gas-rich emirate is at the centre of the biggest diplomatic crisis to hit the Gulf in years.

    Qatar has been isolated for the past week by Saudi and others over “terrorism” and because of its relatively relaxed approach to relations with Jeddah’s great regional rival, Iran.

    As a result Qatar’s only land border has been closed, it has been stopped from using the airspace of neighbouring nations, and its citizens have been told to leave various Gulf countries within two weeks.

    Qahtani’s remarks are some of the few comments to so far emerge from Doha during the crisis.

    The most visible member of the government has been Sheikh Mohammed, who has said Qatar would not “surrender” to the political pressure.

    Qahtani said diplomatic efforts to resolve the dispute would continue.

    “We have more friends, more than other people might think,” he said after Sheikh Mohammed visited Germany and Russia over the weekend.

    “So we are engaged and want to engage with more countries.”

    He was also dismissive of a “terror blacklist” published by the Gulf allies at the end of last week, which named various Qataris and Qatar-based organisations.

    As many as 18 individuals were named, including members of the royal family and a former government minister. Also on the list were Doha-based Muslim Brotherhood spiritual leader Yusuf al-Qaradawi and Qatari-funded charities.

    Qahtani, though, said the list was little more than a public relations exercise.

    “It’s quite unfortunate to use this kind of list, this kind of subject. It’s very serious and extremely dangerous to use it in a PR campaign, in a PR game,” he said.
