  • Remote Estates is committed to help Rwandans own homes

    {Remote Estates, a subsidiary of Remote Group of companies which is widely known as an engineering, construction and project management firm, has committed to helping Rwandans own houses by developing modern yet affordable units.}

    This is in line with the government’s policy of increasing urban population to at least 35% by 2020, posing need for 56,000 affordable housing units to meet the target. As a strategy, the government has approved the fund for developers of affordable housing to acquire funding at a lower interest rate compared to bank loans.

    Having operated in Rwanda since 2016, Remote Estates has realized the need of affordable housing units and decided to venture into developing modern units which any interested clients can purchase.

    Remote Estates’ Operations Manager, Ido Herman, reveals to IGIHE the company has spent enough time in the country to know the needs on the ground yet few projects are in place to address the needs. Herman says Remote Estates will develop 270 affordable housing units in Masaka, Kicukiro District.

    The cost of a three-bedroom apartment with its facilities starts $35,000 (around Rwf30 million). The interior of the apartment is incremental to allow the owner to customize the inside walling the way they want. Self build is an option to keep the costs down, but buyers can also choose for a complete apartment.

    The units will be constructed using Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC), the construction material that is widely used in developed countries in America, Europe and Asia.

    AAC helps reduce at least 30% of environmental waste and decrease 50% of greenhouse gas emissions as opposed to traditional concrete cement.

    Herman says that interested clients choose the best ways for them to afford paying the unit of their choice including paying in five installments with the first installment due at the beginning of construction works.

    {{Equipped developer to deliver on time}}

    While some investors start projects and fail on the way due to their dependence on expected funding which may not be disbursed, Herman says that Remote Estates has all the required means to deliver the project on time without waiting for any external funding.

    “We have heard of previous housing projects where investors only built 5 or 10 houses, and failed to complete the project. It won’t be the case for Remote Estates, as we are a private company capable to deliver our project without relying on other institutions,” says Herman

  • Kagame urges Private Sector to do more to improve tertiary education in Africa

    {President Paul Kagame has urged the private sector to do more to improve tertiary education on the African continent.}

    Kagame made the remarks in his keynote speech on today during the official opening of the Sustainable Development Goals Center for Africa forum (SDGC/A) at Radisson Blu Hotel and Convention Center in Kigali.

    Held under the theme “Mobilizing African Intellectuals Towards Quality Tertiary Education”, the two-day summit meeting is an effort aimed to convene major stakeholders for essential discussions on major themes relevant to SDG implementation in tertiary education and research throughout Africa.

    As a platform for intellectuals’ engagement, the workshop is specifically designed for the field of actors who are exposed to Africa’s higher education bottlenecks in their daily professional lives.

    In his speech, Kagame said that there has been much progress in the education sector in recent years, including through the catalyst that was the Millennium Development Goals. In particular, he noted, access to education has greatly improved.

    “This is important to acknowledge because it shows that we can do it. But it is not enough to support the ambition we have for our continent. More children are attending school but Africa needs much more graduates with knowledge and skills, to grow and sustain our economies, and shape the future of the continent.”

    “This is far from what is required to end poverty and instability, achieve prosperity, or even sustain our dignity as human beings. We, therefore, have to find ever more innovative ways to attract needed resources from the private sector,” the President said.

    Experts say Africa universities currently function in very difficult circumstances amidst social, economic and political problems facing the continent and in the context of globalization.

    To overcome these challenges Kagame said that the role of government in setting education policies, and as the primary funder of education will and has to continue. However, governments alone, even with the right levels of financial allocation to the sector and the support of development partners, cannot sustain the momentum needed.

    “We, therefore, have to find ever more innovative ways to attract needed resources from the private sector. This is especially because businesses have a vested interest in the quality of graduates and the skills they bring to the market.”

    On this, he explained that modern technology including ICT presents unprecedented opportunities to overcome barriers to delivering information and skills to the population. In particular, how affordable broadband will open up new pathways to world-class education, and vastly improve global collaboration on research.

    “Our responsibility now is to work together to create the right conditions for delivery of the twenty-first Century education that everyone deserves, in order that we may all benefit from their talents.” He added

    By compound rankings, Africa is reported to have only ten universities among the top 1,000 universities in the world which experts say echoes the pretty low quality. Besides over US$4 billion is spent per annum to employ over 100,000 western experts to provide technical assistance.

    Dr. Belay Begashaw, the director general of the SDG Center for Africa, condemned the fact that solving many of African problems is often done by outsourcing intellectuals outside the continent.

    On this, he said; “This this is unacceptable. We have to do things differently,” Begashaw observed, adding; “The challenges faced can be addressed if all stakeholders worked together.

  • Lawmakers blast Trump’s ‘crude, false, and unpresidential’ CNN tweet

    {Another bizarre tweet from the president of the United States. Another round of outrage and condemnation from lawmakers.}

    President Trump on Sunday morning posted to Twitter a doctored video clip that showed him slamming a man — with “CNN” superimposed on his head — to the ground. In the video, Trump then throws punches at the man’s head, before walking away.

    Trump appended the tweet with two hashtags: “#FraudNewsCNN” and “#FNN.”

    The video, which reportedly originated on Reddit last week, was quickly blasted on social media as not befitting of the office of the president and appearing to promote violence against CNN’s journalists. Trump has long had an antagonistic relationship with the cable news network, often accusing it of being “Fake News.”

    On ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday, homeland security adviser Tom Bossert pursed his lips when shown the tweet on air, then defended Trump, saying he was communicating directly in a “genuine” way to Americans.

    “I think that no one would perceive that as a threat,” Bossert told “This Week” host Martha Raddatz. “I hope they don’t.”

    Lawmakers felt otherwise, taking to Twitter to blast Trump for, again, tweeting “crude, false, and unpresidential content.” Many defended the free press as critical to the nation’s democracy, especially with Independence Day on the horizon.
