  • Police refutes death claims in Top Tower demolition

    {National Police has refuted as false claims by European Ambassador to Rwanda Michael Ryan who alleged that a person was killed on Monday July 24th, during the demolition process of the Top Tower Hotel at Kimihurura near KCB.}

    European Amb, Ryan had posted on his twitter handle “EU Residence Kigali, an insanely dangerous demolition, destroyed our wall, one worker killed, house intact.”
    However, Kigali Police spokesperson SP Emmanuel Hitayeze who was interviewed by IGIHE refuted the claims saying that is was false news.

    “They lied, that is false information. I asked those who were around. I don’t know where he got that information from. There is no case that was reported, what they are speculating is false news. At least he should have named the person. An investigation would be carried out to find out his name.” Hitayeze insisted.

    An employee at the demolition site told IGIHE that they were not aware where the news came from, but he disclosed that the Ambassador came by and insisted the owner should go to court.

    He said; “He was here last Thursday and Sunday, complaining and saying that the owner should bring his lawyer.”

    Minister of Justice Johnson Busiingye replied to Amb Ryan’s tweet claims “Amb. KCC says demolition went well, that part of the fence was damaged last week, that no one
    was Killed or Hurt, Truth being adjusted to fit?”

    Demolition of the hotel located at Kimihurura on plots 900 and 901, began on Monday, July 11th to make way for development activities in line with the Kigali City Master Plan, according to City of Kigali authorities who closed the facility in June last year over standards concerns.

    In a statement released, City of Kigali wrote that according to the first phase of the Master Plan implementation in 2013-12017, Kimuhurura area is required to be redeveloped to fit the appropriate use of the plots into city level commercial district (C3 Zone).

    Until yesterday, efforts by IGIHE to reach out to the owner for a comment have not been possible.

  • National Handball Coach names squad for IHF Challenge trophy

    {Antonia Ntabanganyimana, coach of the National Handball under-20 men’s team has named a 14- man-squad for the IHF Challenge trophy slated from August 1-6 in Senegal.
    }

    Rwanda (Zone 5B) is grouped in Pool A together with side other zone winners: DR Congo (Zone 4), Madagascar and Senegal, while Pool B is composed of Ethiopia (Zone 5A), Mozambique (Zone 6) and Benin (Zone 3).

    The men’s U-20 teams, has spent some days in camp at Huye district where they have been holding preparations ahead of the competition.

    Senegal, which won the competition in 2016 at the zonal level of the boys before losing the title in the girls will therefore be in contention only in the boys.

    As part of the preparations,Ntabaganyimana’s team played a selected team of players from different clubs from Kigali to try and weigh themselves ahead of the tournmanent, they won first game by 38-23, however in the second game played on Sunday, they lost 41-28.

    After the two friendlies, the Ntabanganyimana eliminated some players reducing the number from 30 to 14 players.

    Meanwhile, Bruno Credo Sengoga (St Aloys), SamuleMbesutunguwe(EsKigoma), Thierry Hakizimana (ADEGI) and Guido Urangwanimpuhwe could failed to make to the final list.

  • Comedienne Anne Kansiime comes back to Kigali

    {Kigali comedy fans will once again burst into spasms of laughter when Ugandan comedienne and movie artist, Anne Kansiime returns with her show Seka Live 3 Kigali on August 26th at Serena Hotel.
    }

    Originally from Kabale District in Western Uganda, the pint-sized entertainer announced the news on her Instagram saying that she was happy to be returning to her fans in Kigali, adding that her show Seka Live 3 will be lovely, and joyful.

    Speaking to IGIHE, Arthur Nkusi the organizer, and one of the humorist expected to partner with Kansiime said that they have just started preparations.

    “Already we paid her half of what we agreed, we’ve got the equipment, the venue is reserved, the next step is now to promote the show. Over-all, it will be different compared with the previous.”

    “As we continue to organize more shows, we’re at the same time gaining more experience. If anything never went as planned because of certain reasons, we plan to correct the mistakes.” Nkusi added.

    Kansiime who came to Kigali on July 24, 2016 has previously performed in: Botswana, Malawi, Rwanda, Nigeria, United Kingdom, Zambia and other countries across the world.

  • Woman killed by a crocodile at Nyabarongo

    {A 54, year old woman died after a crocodile killed her at 6:30 on Sunday as she fetched water from Nyabarongo River.}

    The deceased is identified as Sperata Nyirampakaniye, a resident of Mageragere Sector, Kavuma Cell, Nyarugenge District.

    The Mayor of Nyarugenge District, Kayisime Nzaramba, told IGIHE that the tragedy s occurred during a period when the district is trying to make clean water available in that area which is inhabited by residents who still use water from the river infested by many crocodiles.

    Nzaramba said, “Generally, as far as Mageragere is concerned, we are trying to make sure we avail clean water to the entire area before the end of this year; Nyarufunzo has water, in Kavumu where the late was residing, drilling of wells will start this Tuesday 25th July 2017.”

  • Police lauds motorcyclist for handing over Rwf 5.2million

    {{Police has lauded Donate Ndayiramiye a motorcyclist for handing over Rwf 5.2 million to Traffic Police, money that belonged to a passenger who was involved in an accident.}}

    Donath Ndayiramiye whose daily job is to transport passengers on a motorcycle rammed into a coaster bus at Muhima on Sunday while carrying Augustin Kayinamura who had an envelope of money.

    Kayinamura who got injured was transferred to CHUK hospital for treatment. Ndairamiye who remained with the evelop decided to take it to Traffic Police.

    CIP Emmanuel Kabanda, spokesperson for Traffic Police and Road Safety department has told IGIHE “The accident happened on Sunday at Muhima, near APACOPE. The family of the passenger has already received the money.”

    {{After facing off Uganda in the second game of the Confederation of the Africa Volleyball Zone V championships taking place in Kigali Amahoro Stadium, Rwanda will now face Kenya on Monday July, 25th.}}

    In front of a huge packed audience at Petit Stadium, host Rwanda faced off Uganda in one of the exciting game of the competition.

    Uganda opened the game on a good note to lead with 5-2 points in the first set, they kept the momentum going to continue leading by 19-16 but later Paul Bitok andthe home side changed strategy to level the matters 19 all before taking the set by 25-23.
    Rwanda went on to seal the second and third sets by 25-17 and 25-13 respectively. Uganda beat Kenya in the opening match by 3-2 in victory that was determined in five sets, while the host was too good for the Africa’s newest nation South Sudan in the opener.

    The top two teams will qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, due in Cairo in October thereafter the best top two teams will qualify to represent the African continent at the 2018 FIVB World Championships finals scheduled in Japan between Sept 30 and October 21.

  • COMESA set to deploy election observers in Rwanda

    {COMESA will deploy a short term electoral observation mission to the upcoming Rwandan presidential elections set for August 4th.}

    The team will observe the pre-election, election and post-election activities. The mission will be led by a member of the COMESA Committee of Elders.
    Bishop Mary Nkosi from Mnlawi will lead the team to Rwanda and is expected to arrive in Kigali on 27 July 2017.

    The observation mission will issue preliminary statements immediately after observing the elections while a comprehensive report will be published after 90 days.

    The presidential elections in Rwanda follow the 2015 referendum that unanimously approved a constitutional amendment that allowed President Paul Kagame to run for office in 2017.

    August 4th elections are considered important in Rwanda’s socio-economic and political progress.

    In the past years, Rwanda has made significant progress in consolidating its political stability, economic growth, and development.

    Furthermore, Rwanda has recorded major milestones in consolidating democracy through holding periodic parliamentary and presidential elections as stipulated in its legal framework.

    Since 2008, COMESA has continued to support the elections process in Rwanda. COMESA observed the parliamentary elections that were held in 2008, 2013 and the presidential elections held in 2010.

    COMESA observes elections in the Member States as a means of promoting and consolidating democracy in the region.

    It believes that elections play a pivotal role in societal transformation in the region and provide a footstall for entrenching democratic principles.

    Premised on this critical role, Member States have continued holding periodic elections which have heralded a new dawn by signifying steady progress towards deepening and institutionalizing democracy in the 19-member bloc.

  • We want to transform Ngoma District-promises Kagame

    {The Chairman of the RPF Inkotanyi and the party’s flag bearer in the forthcoming Presidential elections, Paul Kagame, on Sunday promised to transform Ngoma District, should they give the mandate to the RPF to lead the country.}

    The incumbent President was campaigning in Eastern Province where he made his second campaign stop of the day, which he had begun from nearby Kirehe.

    “We want to transform Ngoma into a modern town with modern infrastructure, electricity, schools and health facilities. There are some ongoing activities that should be finished soon but I want this town to change the face,” he told the tens of thousands of Ngoma residents.

    The RPF-Inkontanyi Chairman took the time to thank the people of Ngoma for their hard work, saying that he had no doubt that together, they will transform the region.
    “When people work hard, when there is good governance, everything else follows.”

  • Rwanda secures first Commonwealth Youth Games beach Volley bronze medal

    {Valentine Munezero and Penelope Musabyimana delivered a rare medal for Rwanda by defeating Scotland in the bronze medal contest at the Commonwealth Youth Games Beach Volleyball in Nassau, Bahamas.}

    In an epic girl’s game, Rwanda beat Scotland’s Jennifer Lee and Emma Waldie 15-21, 26-24, 15-10 on Saturday, beforehand they national beach volleyball pair qualified to the semifinals in Commonwealth Youth Games 2017, in the first match they beat Trinidad and Tobago 2-

    Penelope Musabyimana and Valentine Munezero lost their second match against the New Zealand 0-2 (10-21; 19-21). Rwandan side is the only African team in top 4.
    Meanwhile, Australia entered the record books as the first nation to win a Commonwealth Youth Games beach volleyball gold medal as Rebecca Ingram and Carrie Van Rensburg beat New New Zealand’s Ella Akkerman Jasmine Pepi-Milton in straight sets today.

    The Australian pair proved far too strong for their fierce rivals as they swept aside the New Zealand pair 21-13, 21-13 in 29 minutes at the Bahamas Football Association National Stadium.

    The boy’s title was secured by England’s Javier and Joaquin Bello, who overcame Sotiris Siapanis and Constantinos Skordis of Cyprus 21-16, 21-14.
