  • Rwanda to face Sudan in a friendly ahead of Ugandan clash

    Rwanda national team Amavubi will face Sudan on August 7, 2017, in Kigali in an international friendly match ahead of the third round clash with Uganda in the Nations for African Championship (CHAN) qualifiers between August 11-13.

    Sudan who eliminated Burundi to book a place in the third round is expected in Kigali this weekend.

    The friendly tie will help Antoine Hey’s side to assess his crop of players whom he will rely on for third round qualifying campaign against Uganda which starts on August 12 with a first leg clash to be staged at St. Mary’s Kitende stadium with the reverse fixture slated for a week later in Kigali.

    Sudan is also preparing to face Ethiopia following their 1-0 aggregate win over Burundi in the second round. Ethiopia was granted a 3-0 win in their second leg of the 2018 CAF African Championships Qualifiers on Sunday when Djibouti withdrew their participation.

    The encounter was set to be staged at Hawassa Stadium in Ethiopia on Sunday, but the visiting side withdrew ahead of the second leg.

    In the wake of Djibouti’s withdrawal prior the return leg, the Walia Ibex were handed a win on a walk over and credited with a 3-0 win.

    Ethiopia was in an uncompromising mood in the opening leg against the Shoremen of the Red Sea as they handed them a 5-1 defeat at home at Djibouti City last week.
    The 8-1 aggregate score for the Central-East African nation takes them closer to booking a spot in Kenya next year.

    Meanwhile, Amavubi started intensive training on Monday Stade de Kigali. Rwanda eliminated Tanzania on 1-1 aggregate following a goalless draw in the second leg, while Uganda knocked out South Sudan 5-1 on aggregate.

    The Amavubi team missed out on the inaugural tournament in 2009 but went on to feature in the Sudan edition in 2011 and last year in Rwanda 2016.

  • First phase of Bugesera Airport construction gets underway

    {Construction of the first phase of the New Bugesera International Airport in the Eastern Province has got underway.}

    The preliminary works started in January 2016, whereas real construction started 30th June 2017, and is expected to be completed by December 2018.

    Our reporter who visited the site says that the expansive site is awash with engineering works, clearing and executing different activities that will see the facility as one of the most modern airport in the region. Upon completion, the airport will have capacity of receiving over one million and seven hundred thousand passengers annually. The total cost is estimated to be U$ 418 million (Approximately Rwf 351billion).

  • Davis Kasirye, Jean Claude Iranzi unveiled by Zambia’s Zesco United

    {Former Rayon Sports striker Davis Kasirye and APR FC player Jean Claude Iranzi have completed the transfer to Zambia’s Premier League side, Zesco United.}

    Kasirye and Iranzi were officially unveiled in Lusaka at the Trade Fair Ground on Tuesday. The circumstances under which Kasirye left Darling Motema Pembe were said to be the breach of his employment contract where today he is still owed salaries and wages.

    Zesco United Media and Public Relations Officer Katebe Chengo told Supersport that the players were brought in as replacements for players who had left or were about to leave the club.

    “We have Davis Kasirye as a striker from Darling Clube Motema Pembe in the Democratic Republic of Congo but he is Ugandan. We all know that one of our strikers, Idris Mbombo, left for Saudi Arabia.

    “We also have Jean Claude Iranzi, he is Rwandese and has joined us from Slovakia. He is a left winger who will replace Tanzanian Luizio Juma who is expected to make a permanent move to Simba SC.

    The club also signed two other players from neighboring Burundi.

    “The other two are from Burundi. They are yet to arrive but the good news is that their registration has already been done and we have their International Transfer Certificates,” Chengo said.
    Chengo stated that of the new arrivals only Davis Kasirye had started regular training and might make his debut in the Week 9 rescheduled match away to Lumwana Radiants on Wednesday.

    Signed from Rayon to Motema Pembe on a two-year contract deal, the Ugandan striker guided Rayon to the Peace Cup in 2016 and went on to score 13 league goals that season, after 14 years.
    He has previously played at Express, URA, and BUL in the Uganda Premier League.

  • Rwanda U20 team off to good start in 2017 IHF Championship

    {Under 20 Rwanda Handball team is off to a good note after winning the opening game in the ongoing 2017 Africa Handball Championship.}

    Rwanda beat Madagascar by 35-24 points in the opener to register the first victory at Amadou Barry Stadium in Dakar, Senegal

    Antoine Ntabanganyimana’s team were leading into the half time by 18-9. Madagascar improved after the break to narrow the gap but Rwandan boys were good going to seal the second half by a 17-5 victory.

    In the next game, Ntabanganyimana and his side will take on neighbors DR Congo on Wednesday evening at 8:00 pm. A win will see them through to the semis.
    Antoine Ntabanganyimana’s boys looked sharper from the onset compared, making less defensive mistakes and very fast in the attack to go into half-time with an 18-9 lead.

    Elsewhere, Benin devastated Ethiopia by 47-27

    Next up for Rwanda is a clash against the neighbors Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday evening, starting at 8 pm. Should Rwanda win against DR Congo, they will be the first team through to semi-finals.

    On Thursday, Rwanda will face hosts Senegal in what is expected a be thriller.
    Rwanda is placed in Pool A alongside Senegal, Madagascar and DR Congo. The top teams from Pool A will advance to the semi’s to be played on Friday against the top two from Pool B that is composed of Benin, Ethiopia, and Mozambique.

    The finals will be played on Saturday.

  • Two drown in Rwamagana reservoir

    {Two male teenagers aged between20-24 were found dead days after drowning in a water reservoir from which water is drawn to irrigate crops in Kigabiro Sector, Rwamagana, Eastern Province.}

    The deceased are reported to have drowned on July 29th, but their bodies were discovered two days later in the reservoir.

    Police spokesperson in Eastern Province IP Jean Bosco Dusabe has told IGIHE that the two deceased teenagers have been identified as Emmanuel Kabandana, 20 and Martin Barayavuga, 24.

    He said, “They drowned three days ago, but the bodies were recovered on Wednesday and were immediately buried. The two were said to be experienced in swimming the fact that reservoir was man made, they must have been swimming from the deeper end.”

    IP Dusabe further added that they used some of the experienced swimmers and boats from the area to recover the bodies.

    The Kimpima reservoir is located between Munyaga Sector and Kigabiro is used by farmers to irrigate crops.

  • Rwanda deploys Mechanized Infantry battalion to South Sudan

    {The first elements of the Reconnaissance Company of the Mechanized Infantry Battalion of RDF left for Juba in South Sudan on 30 July 2017.

    The movement of the Contingent Owned Equipment and its manning personnel was done by road through Uganda to the South Sudan’s capital Juba.

    According to the official statement released by RDF, it is said that the Reconnaissance Company’s main body is expected to be airlifted from Kigali International Airport to Juba on 5 August 2017.

    The deployment follows a United Nations Security Council Resolution number 2304 (2016) adopted on 12 August 2016 that decided the deployment of a Regional Protection Force (RPF) to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan to provide a secure environment in and around Juba.

    Following the United Nations’ request, the Government of Rwanda accepted the deployment of a Mechanised Infantry Battalion and the proposal to first send in a Reconnaissance Company as an Advance Party to the near future deployment of the Battalion.

    Rwanda maintains two Infantry battalions in Juba and Malakal and one Aviation Unit serving under UNMISS.

  • Electoral Commission says all is set as Rwandan head to polls

    {Rwandans in the Diaspora will cast their vote tomorrow while voters in the country will make their choice on who will lead the country’s transformation agenda for the next seven years on Friday 4th August.

    The National Electoral Commission (NEC) has said that all is set for Rwandans to cast their votes starting from August 3rd for those in diaspora and August 4th.
    NEC has said that distribution of voting materials to all the country’s 30 districts has been carried out without any incident, and will now deliver the materials to polling centers at the cell level.

    The Executive Secretary of NEC, Charles Munyaneza, has told IGIHE that what remains was to make sure that voting materials are delivered to the respective polling stations before time.

    NEC has set up 2,340 polling centers and 16,691 polling rooms. “All the polling materials have reached the district stations, the next step is ensuring that they will be transported to the centers where the voting is going to take place,” Munyaneza said.
    Over 6.8 million registered voters are expected to cast their votes during the 2017 Rwandan presidential election.

    The entire election process has been organized at an estimated Rwf6.2 billion. This year, the number of voters has increased by 1.7 million, up from 5.1 million that voted in the last elections. 54 per cent of voters are female.
    NEC has also noted that there are 98 polling centers in the Diaspora where 44,362 people are registered to cast their votes at embassies or consulates.

    Over 1780 observers are set to monitor the elections this year. The mission observers from COMESA early this week said that they will dispatch observers to all the provinces in the country.

  • Over 500 FAWE students empowered with personal soft skills

    Over 500 students have been empowered with soft personal skills, enabling them to be exemplary so that they can gain confidence and self-esteem and be useful to society and their families.

    The one-day training held at Fawe Girls School, was supported by FAWE Rwanda in partnership MasterCard Foundation.

    The training was facilitated by personalities from different countries, giving them tips on life skills. The Chairperson of FAWE Girls’ School Parents Association, Jennifer Mujuni, told IGIHE that they have so far achieved a lot, which they attribute to the leadership in the country that promoted gender equality, thus empowering them to enhance girl child education.

    She said; “Girl education in Rwanda has been improved dramatically, most especially with the support of government. You are well aware that the government has revitalized our esteem, equality and girl inclusion in the education system,”

  • Over 7,000 Rwandans in Uganda to vote in Presidential Elections

    {Over 7,000 Rwandans in Uganda to vote Over 7,000 Rwandans in Uganda are expected to vote during the upcoming elections, according to National Electoral Commission-NEC.}

    In an interview with IGIHE, Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Uganda Maj. Gen Frank Mugambage said that all is set for over 7,000 Rwandese living in Uganda to vote in an election pitting incumbent President, Paul Kagame against two candidates.

    On 3th and 4th August, Rwanda is set to go to the polls to choose a president that will steer it for the next seven years.

    Other candidates in the race include Frank Habineza, of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda and Phillip Mpayimana an independent. Just like it was in 2010, the mission’s premises will provide a polling station.

    “We expect over 7000 Rwandans to vote from here on 3rd August. All is set and the campaigns are going on,” Mugambagye told the media at Rwanda’s embassy earlier today.

  • Rubavu Mayor freed

    {The Mayor of Rubavu District, Sinamenye Jérémie, and Dukundimana Esperance in charge of administration and personnel in Rubavu District’ have been set free.
    }

    The two were put under police custody after being accused independent presidential candidate Phillippe Mpayimana during his campaign trail in the Sectors of Nyamyumba, Gisenyi, and Kanama, Rubavu district.

    The two were arrested at the same time with the Executive Secretary of Busanza Sector, in Nyaruguru District.

    Sinamenye’s attorney, Straton Nsengiyumva, who released the information said that the prosecution decided to set the mayor free, without hearing his case.

    The President of Rubavu intermediate court, Danny Hategekimana said that he does not know on what grounds they have been released. However, he said that the charges have not been dropped.
